Caspian's POV

Eight days after, and I still woke up at four in the morning because somehow my body had refused to believe that the thing it had spent weeks preparing for no longer needed preparing for.

Meanwhile Ana was asleep upstairs. Really asleep, for the first time in three nights. Her breathing was slow and even under my hand before I'd slipped out from beside her.

I had come down to the study so I would stop looking at her sleeping.

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 72: The Date

Ana's POV Emily's reply came back longer than I expected, and I could feel the discomfort in it before I'd even finished reading.I called her the second I was done."Walk me through it," I said."Calder Street sits under a subsidiary," Emily started. "The subsidiary sits inside a package of eleven facilities. All acquired three years ago, one deal, one signature. The parent company is Strauss Technology Limited.""So he owns it?""The company owns it. He owns the company. Those aren't automatically the same thing, Ana, and I want to be honest with you about that before you build something out of it.""How hard was it to find?""That's the part that's bothering me," she mumbled. "Under an hour. Public filing. I didn't need to break into anything or call in a favour. A thing that simple to find isn't usually a thing somebody's hiding.""Then why does it feel like a secret?""I don't know," Emily said. "Maybe because nobody ever told you to go looking."“I… don't… I..”"I couldn't find

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 71: Whatever She Told You

Sebastian's POV "Whatever she told you," Nicole said, "I never touched her.""What do you mean?"The words came out of me flat, giving nothing, and it cost me more than anything I'd said in that doorway so far, because the honest answer was that I had no idea what she was talking about, and the second she knew that, this whole conversation was over. She stepped back from the door, not quite an invitation, more like she needed the distance to keep talking."I only spoke to her," she continued. "I want that clear before anything else. I didn't touch her, I didn't threaten her, I just stood in a parking lot and I talked.""Go on."Just two words. I had learned, across a hundred negotiating tables, that the emptiest words in the language does more work than any full one, because a frightened person can't stand to fill a quiet room with nothing. And thankfully, Nicole couldn't stand it either."She'd just come out of some meeting," she rambled. "I didn't plan it that carefully, Sebastia

Caspian's POV Eight days after, and I still woke up at four in the morning because somehow my body had refused to believe that the thing it had spent weeks preparing for no longer needed preparing for.Meanwhile Ana was asleep upstairs. Really asleep, for the first time in three nights. Her breathing was slow and even under my hand before I'd slipped out from beside her. I had come down to the study so I would stop looking at her sleeping. There's a point past which looking at someone sleep stops being love and becomes something closer to surveillance, and I had crossed that line somewhere around night five without noticing until I was well past it.I had been flawless for eight days. Present. Kind. Endlessly available, every offer made softly, every hard word swallowed before it reached her.And in the drawer three feet from where I sat, folded along its own creases, sat a decree with my brother's signature on it, and a question I had still not asked her.I told myself the kindnes

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 69: The Manifest

Sebastian's POV Five days since the hotel, and I had been in a strange mood I didn't have a name for.I wasn't happy. I wasn't foolish enough to call it that. But lighter, somehow, the way a room feels different after you've finally put down something heavy you'd been carrying so long you forgot it had weight. I had signed. I had apologized and asked for nothing in return. And I had told myself that was the end of it, the whole debt paid in one sitting, and for five days I had almost believed it.Just then my lawyer called about a tax filing, nothing to do with any of this, and mentioned it in passing."The decree went through fast, by the way," he said. "Faster than I expected, honestly. Their side pushed it. There's a note on file about a medical matter, nothing detailed, just flagged for priority processing.""A medical matter?""Didn't say what. Could be anything, Sebastian. A doctor's appointment that needed the paperwork cleared, a form for insurance. These things get flagged

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 68: The Fourth Day

Ana's POV A car alarm went off outside at nine in the morning and wouldn't stop, and I lay there listening to it and couldn't make myself get up.Four days.It was an ordinary Tuesday, and that was the part that hurt in a way the hospital hadn't. The hospital had been loud and sharp. This was just a day, stretching out the same as any other. The sun came up the same as always. Somebody's delivery truck idled outside, engine running too long, the driver arguing with someone on the phone. A box arrived at eleven, something I'd ordered three weeks ago for a nursery that didn't exist anymore, and I signed for it without reading the label and set it by the door and didn't open it.The socks were still on the nightstand. Neither of us had moved them and neither of us would say why.My body hadn't caught up yet. That was the cruelest part, the part nobody warns you about.Standing in front of the bathroom mirror that morning, my hand went to my stomach out of habit, flat and doing nothing,

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   Chapter 67: A Man Who Owns Hospitals

Caspian's POV I was in a meeting when the phone rang.I almost let it go to voicemail. Board calls come in during meetings all the time, and I have trained myself not to flinch at a buzzing phone. But then I saw the name on the screen, the building's emergency line, the one that only ever means one thing, and I was out of my chair before I'd finished reading it."Take over," I said to Doyle, already moving, and didn't wait to see if he understood why.Three words from Reyes when I got him on the line. "It's Anastasia. Hospital.""Which one?""Calder Street. The ambulance left four minutes ago."Everything after that moved very fast and very flat. The lift doors took eleven seconds to close. I counted them. The car was already running because Reyes had called ahead, and I was in the back seat doing the math on the drive, the ambulance's head start against the car's speed, working out whether I could beat it there.I got there before the ambulance did.°°°°°°°°°°I know this group. I

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 5: Fifty Thousand Reasons

Ana's POV I had been at my desk twenty minutes when HR walked in and shut the door behind her."Settling in?" she asked, but her eyes were doing something her smile wasn't."It's going as planned." I kept my voice light. "The launch timeline holds. I'll have the full rollout deck ready by Friday."

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 4: The Man Who Never Forgets

Caspian’s POV I knew her the second I walked through that door.I had told myself I wouldn't. I had told myself a man doesn't remember one face out of a crowded club, one night out of a hundred forgettable nights, one woman he left before the sun came up. I had told myself a lot of things on the f

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 3: The Stranger and the Cash

Ana's POV I looked at the floor he wanted me to kneel on.Then I looked at my husband, sitting there so sure of himself, and I almost laughed."No," I said. His smile slipped. "Ana.""I will never kneel to her." My voice was steady now. The shaking was gone, burned clean out of me. "Keep your sign

  • Pregnant For The Wrong Brother   CHAPTER 2: The Woman in My Kitchen

Ana's POV I didn't leave the bedroom for three days. The curtains stayed closed. The phone stayed face down. I laid on top of the covers in the same robe and stared at the light on the ceiling, morning into evening into morning again.Sebastian didn't come home. Why would he? He had somewhere bett
