Chapter 65: Paradise for Two

Bora Bora. French Polynesia.

The water was so blue it looked like liquid sapphire.

Serenity stood on the deck of an overwater bungalow, letting the ocean breeze play with her hair. It was quiet. Unnaturally quiet.

"Where are the other guests?" she asked, looking at the empty beach and the vacant restaurant down the pier.

Jackson walked up behind her, wearing nothing but swim trunks and sunglasses. He handed her a coconut drink.

"I rented the resort," he said casually.

"You... you mean a suite?"

"No. The resort. The island. The staff is on the main island, available only by radio. For the next two weeks, the population of this island is two."

Serenity choked on her drink. "Jackson! That's... excessive. Even for you."

"I told you," Jackson wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. "I don't want to share you. Not with paparazzi, not with business partners, not even with waiters."

He kissed her shoulder.

"For five years, you faced the world alone. For the next fourteen days, your only job is to be adored by me."

Serenity turned in his arms, smiling helplessly. "So, what do we do on a deserted island, Mr. Billionaire? Build a raft?"

"We could," Jackson smirked, his hands sliding lower. "Or we could test the structural integrity of that king-sized bed inside."

Serenity laughed, splashing some coconut water on him. "Pervert."

"Husband," he corrected her.

"Fine, husband. But first..." Serenity pointed to her suitcase. "You bought me a thousand bikinis. I need to wear at least one."

An hour later.

Serenity lay on a sun lounger, wearing a white bikini that showed off her curves perfectly. She was trying to read a book, but she could feel a pair of eyes burning into her skin.

Jackson wasn't reading. He was just watching her. Like a dragon guarding his gold.

"Are you going to stare at me for two weeks?" Serenity peered over her sunglasses.

"Yes," Jackson said shamelessly. He picked up a bottle of expensive sunscreen oil. "Turn over. You don't want to get burned."

Serenity rolled onto her stomach.

Jackson poured the warm oil into his hands. When his palms touched her back, Serenity shivered.

His massage wasn't just therapeutic; it was possessive. His large hands glided over her skin, kneading the tension out of her shoulders, then sliding down to her waist.

"You are tense," Jackson murmured.

"I'm still waiting for a ninja to jump out of a palm tree," Serenity admitted mumbling into her arms. "Peace feels... suspicious."

"No ninjas," Jackson pressed a kiss to her shoulder blade. "Arthur is in a maximum-security prison hospital. Stefan is awaiting trial. The world is safe, Serenity. Let go."

Let go.

It was the hardest thing she had ever done. But under Jackson's touch, the knot of anxiety in her chest finally loosened.

"Jackson?"

"Hmm?"

"Thank you," she whispered. "For bringing me here. For bringing me back to life."

Jackson stopped his massage. He leaned down, whispering in her ear.

"You saved me first."

He flipped her over effortlessly. He hovered above her, blocking out the tropical sun.

"Now," Jackson tossed the sunscreen bottle into the sand. His eyes were dark and hungry. "Enough reading. I'm bored."

Serenity giggled as he kissed her neck. "It's barely noon!"

"It's always midnight somewhere," Jackson claimed, capturing her lips.

The sound of the ocean waves drowned out their laughter, guarding the secrets of their paradise.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. Outside the window, nothing existed but snow and night.Jackson adjusted his cufflinks. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's.
