Chapter 79: The Trojan Horse

Jackson returned to the party with Serenity and Aurora, pretending nothing had happened in the lab.

He smiled. He shook hands. But his eyes were scanning every face in the crowd like a surveillance camera. Who knows? Who is watching her eyes?

"Mr. Sterling!"

A high-pitched voice called out from the entrance.

A woman in a flashy red dress strutted into the garden. She was surrounded by an entourage of assistants carrying gift boxes.

Serenity leaned in. "Who is that?"

Jackson frowned. "That is Elena. My father's second cousin. She runs the fashion division of Sterling Group in Milan. I haven't invited her."

"Cousin Jackson!" Elena walked up, kissing the air next to his cheeks. "And this must be the Queen! Oh, I am so sorry I missed the wedding. I was in fashion week!"

She looked down at the baby in Serenity’s arms.

"And this is the little star? Oh, let me see!" Elena reached out with long, manicured nails.

Jackson stepped smoothly in front of her, blocking her hand.

"She’s sleeping, Elena," Jackson said with a tight smile. "Don't wake her."

Elena pouted. "You are such a papa bear. Well, I brought a gift. A genuine antique."

She opened a velvet box. Inside was a beautiful, handcrafted silver rattle. It was encrusted with small sapphires.

"It belonged to the Habsburgs," Elena boasted. "Only the best for a Sterling princess."

Serenity smiled politely. "Thank you, Elena. It's beautiful."

She reached for it, but a small hand grabbed her wrist.

It was Alex.

"Wait, Mom," Alex adjusted his glasses. He was holding a handheld device that looked like a GameBoy. "I need to check it for... durability."

"What a cute nerd," Elena laughed nervously. "It's silver, darling. It's very durable."

Alex ignored her. He waved his device over the silver rattle.

Beep... Beep... Beep.

The screen flashed red.

[ DETECTED: Lithium Battery. Transmission Signal: 2.4 GHz. ]

Alex looked up at Jackson. "Dad. Toys from the 18th century don't have batteries inside."

The smile vanished from Jackson’s face instantly.

He snatched the rattle from the box. He didn't handle it gently. He threw it onto the stone pavement.

Clang.

He stomped on it with his heel.

Crack.

The silver shell broke open. Inside, nestled among the mechanisms, was a tiny, modern black chip and a microphone.

The guests gasped. The music stopped.

"A bug?" Serenity whispered, clutching Aurora tighter.

Elena turned pale. She stepped back. "I... I didn't know! It’s an antique dealer who sold it to me! I swear!"

"Who was the dealer?" Jackson asked, stepping closer to her. His voice was low, devoid of any warmth. "Name. Now."

"It was... a man in Zurich. Mr. V," Elena stammered, terrified. "He said it would bring good luck!"

"Mr. V," Jackson repeated.

V for Venom? Or V for Viper? Or maybe Vex?

"Luke!" Jackson barked. "Escort Cousin Elena to the interrogation room. Politely."

"No! Jackson! I'm family!" Elena screamed as security guards dragged her away from the champagne tower.

Jackson turned to the crowd of stunned nobles and guests.

"Party is over," he announced calmly. "Go home."

As the guests hurried out, Jackson looked at the broken rattle on the ground.

They weren't just watching from the outside anymore. They were trying to listen to their private conversations. They wanted to know if the baby was special.

"They are probing us," Margaret said, walking up to them. "Testing our defenses."

"Let them probe," Jackson picked up the microchip. He crushed it between his fingers.

"Alex, trace this signal," Jackson ordered. "Let's see who is listening on the other end."

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white.
