Damien Ashford had built his entire life on control.

Control over his company.

Control over his emotions.

Control over every decision that could affect the empire his family had spent generations building.

But the photograph on his desk had destroyed that control in less than a minute.

He stared at the little boy's face again.

There was something unsettling about him.

Not because the child looked familiar.

Because he felt familiar.

A strange ache settled in Damien's chest as he looked at the gray eyes staring back at him through the photograph.

The same eyes he had seen in his dreams.

The same eyes belonging to a woman whose face he could never remember.

"Mr. Ashford."

Damien looked up.

Marcus stood at the office entrance with a file in his hand.

"I found her."

For a moment, Damien said nothing.

Then he stood.

"Tell me everything."

Marcus placed the file on the desk.

"Her name is Elena Carter. Twenty-six years old. She works as an interior designer."

Damien opened the file.

The first page contained her photograph.

The moment he saw her face clearly, something inside him shifted.

A flash.

A memory.

A woman's laughter beneath falling rain.

A warm hand holding his.

A voice whispering his name.

Then it disappeared.

Damien closed his eyes.

The pain was sudden.

Intense.

"Are you alright?"

He ignored Marcus.

"Continue."

"Elena Carter has a five-year-old son named Noah Carter."

Damien's fingers stopped moving.

Five years old.

The number felt like a door he had been trying to open for years.

"When was he born?"

Marcus looked down at the document.

"Five years ago."

Silence filled the office.

Damien looked at the photograph again.

A child.

A woman.

A missing memory.

A terrible possibility.

"Find out everything about that child."

Marcus hesitated.

"Do you think..."

"Don't assume anything."

Damien's voice was cold.

But his eyes betrayed him.

Because deep down, he already knew.

---

Elena spent the next morning pretending everything was normal.

That was something she had become very good at.

Pretending she wasn't scared.

Pretending she wasn't exhausted.

Pretending she wasn't one unexpected bill away from losing everything.

She packed Noah's breakfast while he sat at the kitchen table drawing.

"What are you making?"

He quickly covered the paper.

"It's a surprise."

Elena smiled.

"A surprise for me?"

He nodded proudly.

"Yes."

She kissed his forehead.

"I can't wait."

For a few seconds, life felt normal.

Then her phone rang.

She answered without looking at the number.

"Hello?"

"Ms. Carter?"

"Yes?"

"My office represents Ashford Group."

Elena froze.

Ashford Group.

The name was impossible to miss.

Everyone knew Ashford Group.

One of the largest corporations in the country.

"Why are you calling me?"

"We would like to discuss a professional opportunity with you."

She frowned.

"A professional opportunity?"

"Yes. Your design portfolio has been recommended for an upcoming project."

Elena looked around her small apartment.

A year ago, she would have been excited.

Now, she only wondered what the catch was.

"What kind of project?"

"A private luxury residence."

She hesitated.

"I'll consider it."

"Thank you, Ms. Carter. We will send the details shortly."

The call ended.

Elena stared at her phone.

Ashford Group.

She didn't know why, but the name made her uneasy.

She had spent years trying to forget one man.

The universe seemed determined to remind her of him.

---

By afternoon, Elena stood inside Ashford Tower.

The building was everything she expected from a billionaire corporation.

Massive.

Elegant.

Intimidating.

She adjusted the folder in her hands and stepped into the elevator.

She hated feeling out of place.

But she had learned something important over the years.

Being uncomfortable did not mean she didn't belong.

The elevator doors opened on the executive floor.

A receptionist smiled.

"Ms. Carter?"

"Yes."

"Mr. Ashford is waiting for you."

Elena's heartbeat changed.

"Mr. Ashford?"

The receptionist nodded.

"CEO Damien Ashford."

The world seemed to become strangely quiet.

No.

It couldn't be.

There were millions of people in the world.

Millions of names.

This couldn't be him.

She followed the receptionist down the hallway.

Every step felt heavier.

The door opened.

And then she saw him.

Damien.

Older.

More powerful.

More distant.

But unmistakably him.

For a moment, Elena forgot how to breathe.

Five years disappeared.

She remembered the man who smiled at her.

The man who promised he would return.

The man who never did.

Damien looked at her with polite curiosity.

Not recognition.

Nothing.

That hurt more than she expected.

"Ms. Carter."

His voice was deeper now.

Colder.

"Please sit."

Elena forced herself to move.

She sat across from the man who had once been her entire world.

And he looked at her like she was a stranger.

"I reviewed your portfolio," Damien said. "Your work is impressive."

"Thank you."

"I would like you to handle a private project for my family."

Elena nodded.

"Of course."

The conversation was professional.

Careful.

Empty.

Until Damien asked the question that changed everything.

"Have we met before?"

Elena's fingers tightened around her folder.

For one second, hope appeared.

Then disappeared.

Because Damien's expression showed confusion, not memory.

"I don't think so."

A lie.

The first lie she had ever told him.

Damien watched her carefully.

Something about her answer felt wrong.

Before he could ask another question, his assistant entered.

"Mr. Ashford, your mother is requesting your presence."

Damien stood.

Elena gathered her things.

As she reached the door, his eyes fell on the bracelet around her wrist.

A simple silver bracelet.

His breath caught.

Because he remembered that bracelet.

Not clearly.

Not completely.

But enough.

A woman's hand.

A promise.

A night he had lost.

"Where did you get that?"

Elena looked down.

Her expression changed.

"It's mine."

Damien stepped closer.

"Who gave it to you?"

For the first time since she entered the room, Elena looked directly into his eyes.

"The man who promised he would come back."

Silence.

Damien felt something crack inside his carefully controlled world.

Because before Elena walked away, she said the one thing that made his blood run cold.

"I guess he forgot."

And then she left.

Leaving Damien Ashford standing alone with a memory that had finally begun to return.
