Emily’s POV

The minute I step into the baby store, I feel so much happiness. I can’t help the grin that’s plastered on my face. I greet all the workers with huge smiles as I walk in.

You know what this feels like? It feels like the sun breaking through a cloudy sky. There’s something about the soft pastel colors, the tiny shoes lined up neatly on the shelves, the gentle lullabies playing from hidden speakers. It all feels surreal. My fingers brush against a row of tiny onesies. Each of them is so cute—mint green, baby pink, sunflower yellow. My heart swells.

“I can’t believe I’m really here,” I whisper to myself, letting out a breathy laugh as I hold up a pretty little dress “You’re really coming, my little one…”

I can’t help it. I close my eyes for a second, letting myself imagine this moment how it should be. Carlos pushing the cart, making stupid jokes about baby poop, asking if we really need another stuffed bunny. His hand brushing against mine every now and then, the kind of lit

EMILY’S POVI didn’t even realize how tight I was gripping the chairs until my knuckles turned white. I sit in silence as the driver takes me home..The dress bag sits on the passenger seat. The soft pink dress peeks from the paper like a secret I’m not sure I should’ve bought. A secret I wish I could shout from the rooftops. But I can’t.Not yet.The driver park outside the house—my house. It just occurred to me that Carlos hasn't lived here in weeks, but his memory clings to the furniture, the hallway, the damn coffee mug still sitting on the counter from the last morning he used it. even the maids remind me of him..I close the car door slowly, praying for just one moment of peace. No such luck. The front porch light flickers. A shadow shifts behind me.“Emily.”His voice.I freeze. Slowly turn.Carlos.He's standing at the bottom of the porch steps with his hands shoved into his pockets, like the wind itself pushed him here. He looks tired—like he hasn't slept in days. His dark ha

EMILY’S POVThe dining table is a beautiful mess this evening. My laptop is open. Pencils are scattered and swatches of fabric are laid out beside sketches I’ve been working on all week. The sun has just started to set. It makes the colors in my designs look warmer, more alive. I’m in my zone, sketching out a flowy blush-toned evening dress while clicking between email drafts. I’m working on proposals to send to luxury boutiques and a few eco-friendly fabric brands, pitching my ideas for potential collaborations. For once, I’m not just dreaming—I’m doing. I’m really serious about starting something for myself. A fashion studio, my own label. Maybe I’ll even enroll in fashion school later on. This makes me happy. It’s always been my dream and it’s never too late to start. On my iPad, propped up by a napkin holder, a Facetime call with Bridget and Helen plays in the background. Bridget’s laugh is as loud as ever, and Helen looks effortlessly cool as always.“Okay, but that jumpsuit?” Br

EMILY’S POVThe jet touches down in Paris, and even though I’m tired to the bone, I press my face to the window like a kid. The city lights sparkle below us, and off in the distance, the Eiffel Tower glows like something out of a dream.I’m here.I’m actually in Paris.I can hardly believe it.Sure, I’ve traveled to a lot of places. But the fact that Alexander brought me here is still surprising to me. I mean, what guy takes you on his private jet to Paris all because you were having a stressful time? It says a lot about him and I don’t know how to process it.I rub my belly, smiling down at my child.“Hey baby” I whisper “We’re in Paris”As we step off the plane, the cool night air hits me. I shiver a little, and Alexander places a hand lightly on my back.“Welcome to the City of Lights,” he says with a smile in his voice.I smile back, trying to hide how overwhelmed I feel. “I still can’t believe you brought me here.”He gives me that look—like he’s proud of himself. “Just wait unti

EMILY’S POVBack at the hotel, I slip off my shoes and finally exhale. After a quick shower, I pull on an oversized t-shirt Alexander gave me and crawl into the ridiculously soft hotel bed. I grab my phone and snap a couple of photos—the city skyline glowing from the window, the luxurious bathroom, the impossibly fluffy robe hanging on the door.I send them to Bridget and Helen.Bridget replies almost immediately: You’re one kiss away from falling for this man.I snort. Not gonna happen. He’s just… being sweet.Helen sends three heart-eyes emojis. Sweet is a slippery slope.I toss my phone aside and lie back, staring up at the ceiling. The room is quiet. I should feel relaxed, but instead, my mind won’t shut off. I’m grateful, absolutely. This whole surprise trip is thoughtful and generous. But not romantic. Not for me. And yet…I wonder if I’m being unfair. Am I giving Alexander the wrong idea? Should I have drawn a clearer line? He’s sleeping in the next room, probably thinking thi

Emily’s POVThe silk of the green dress shimmers under my fingertips as I smooth it down over my hips. I stare at my reflection one last time. The sweetheart neckline is modest yet elegant. The dress is perfect. Absolutely perfect.I snap a few pictures, biting my lip as I angle my phone just right. Then I hit send—to Bridget and Helen, because of course I have to. Almost immediately, my phone buzzes.Bridget: Girl, are you trying to end him? 😍🔥Helen: You’re a goddess. If he doesn’t faint on sight, I will.I laugh out loud. With one last spritz of perfume and a shaky deep breath, I step into the hallway and make my way down the elevator.Alexander is waiting in the lobby. The moment his eyes land on me, his eyes widen in surprise. He straightens to his full height. His eyes are locked on me like I’m the only woman in the world. Slowly, he walks to me with his lips partly open.He stops just in front of me, reaching for my hand as though it’s sacred. Then he lifts it to his lips.“Y

CARLOS’ POVIt’s nearly midnight by the time I pull into the driveway.I don’t move.My hand rests on the steering wheel. My fingers are clenched around it like I’m hanging on to something that isn’t there anymore. I stare at the door. The light above it is on—of course it is. Lina always waits up. Whether it’s out of care, obligation, or suspicion, I still haven’t figured out.I lean back into the seat and close my eyes, trying to breathe through the weight that presses down on my chest.Emily.Her name slips into my thoughts. No matter how hard I try to shove her into some corner of the past, she always finds a way to creep back in. Her laugh. The way she used to greet me at the door in those big, fuzzy slippers with her hair pulled back and a smile that felt like home.God, I’m such a damn idiot.I divorced her. Why?Because it started as a contract. That’s what I keep telling myself. It was supposed to be transactional. Practical. We were never meant to feel anything.Except we do

CARLOS’ POVThe sun is too damn bright.I squint as I step out of the car, watching Lina prance ahead of me toward the massive baby boutique like she’s heading into a candy store. Her heels click confidently on the pavement and her hand waves behind her as if to say come on, slowpoke. I catch up because I have to—not because I want to.Truth is, I feel like I’ve been dragged here. Like a leash has been tied around my neck, pulling me along with every smile, every “Carlos, this’ll be fun,” As the glass doors slide open, I hear the sound of lullabies inside the store. Everything is shiny. Expensive. The kind of place where cashmere blankets are folded like art and cribs cost more than some people’s rent.“Isn’t it beautiful?” Lina’s voice is sugar. She spins on her heel and takes my hand, tugging me forward. “I’ve been dying to come here.”I give her a faint smile. “Isn’t it a little early to be shopping?”She waves me off. “It’s never too early. DANIEL’S POVI sit at my desk. My fingers are tapping on the table as the monitor in front of me flashes search results. Lina. Lina. Lina. Dozens of articles. Hundreds of names. None of them her. Each time I think I've found a lead, it slips through my fingers like smoke. A "Lina Morales" in Boston — no match. A "Lina M." in Los Angeles — wrong face. Wrong age. I close each tab one after another. With each second, I get more frustrated."She's a ghost," I mutter under my breath. Not even a damn traffic ticket. Not a whisper of scandal. Nothing. And that, in itself, is the biggest red flag of all.Nobody's that clean. Not unless they have a reason to scrub their past.I know nothing about her apart from the fact that she was married which I find absurd.I lean back in my chair, running a hand through my hair. Why are you hiding, Lina? What the hell are you so desperate to erase?I can't shake the feeling — that itching intuition that something big is sitting just beneath the surface, h

EMILY’S POVLina.I blink, unsure for a moment if my eyes are playing a cruel trick on me. But no—there she is.She looks as lavish as ever. She’s wearing a sparkly emerald gown that shimmers with every step she takes inside. Her smile is painted on perfectly, but her eyes—they’re wild. What’s she doing here?“Surprise,” she purrs. The room falls dead silent. A fork clatters somewhere across the table. You can hear the hum of the chandelier. Even the candles seem to flicker more nervously.Juliet leans into her wine glass and mutters not-so-quietly, “More like a nightmare.”Kathy snorts and rolls her eyes. “Of course she wore emerald. The color of envy and delusion.”I can’t move. I just stare at her as she slowly makes her way into the room, like a queen arriving late to her coronation. My mouth goes dry.“Carlos…” I whisper, my eyes never leaving Lina. “Did you… did you invite her?”Carlos turns to me, looking equally shocked. “What? No—no! Emily, I swear to you, I haven’t spoken to

My hand gently cradles my small but growing bump.We are having a baby girl. My baby girl. The thought still makes my heart flutter with disbelief and happiness. I run my fingers lightly over the curve of my stomach, biting my lower lip as tears sting the corners of my eyes.I never imagine I’d be here—expecting a child, standing in front of this mirror. Now, I will soon face Carlos and his entire family at dinner. My heart pounds with nerves.I shake my head, blinking the thoughts away, and reach for the necklace on the vanity. It is a silver chain with a little heart pendant—simple, but it was my grandmother's. I fasten it carefully, take a deep breath, and look at myself again. My stomach pushes slightly against the pale blue dress I wear. I smooth the fabric and smile nervously at my reflection.“You’

EMILY’S POVThree days. Just three days since the fire and here I am. Back in my studio like it never happened. Carlos did everything to try to convince me to stay home and rest but I still have a lot to do plus I’m feeling a lot better. I won’t let a little incident keep me down. The place is still in recovery mode, with ladders leaned against the walls and the sound of hammering echoing somewhere in the back. The constructors are fixing a lot of things. But I’m here. I’m working. And I’m grateful. My office window overlooks the worksite. A large tarp covers a partially scorched wall outside, but my design space—the heart of everything was mostly untouched. Thank God for insurance. Thank God for second chances. My sketchpad lies open in front of me, filled with new silhouettes and fabric swatches. My laptop rests on the cleanest part of my desk, set up for the biggest Zoom call of my life. The screen lights up with faces—eight board members of Juille Hart, one of the most luxurious f

EMILY'S POVI’m trapped. The air is thick, black, suffocating. I can see the flames all around me. It burns, just like the day my office caught fire. A baby cries in my arms. My heart pounds loudly with fear in my chest. Every step I take is so painful that it feels like a marathon. My legs shake beneath me as I trip over the remains of something I can't even recognize. The smoke goes into my lungs. My throat burns. The door slams behind me.I scream and twist toward it. “Carlos!” Suddenly, I hear someone calling my name—his voice? A shadow in the fire. I reach, but I can’t get to him. The flames close in like a cage. The baby wails louder. I jolt awake.A choked scream rips from my throat. My body convulses, launching me sideways off the bed. I hit the wooden floor hard. Something crashes—glass shatters.I scramble backwards on instinct, gasping for breath. My fingers dig into the floorboards.reality. The room is dark but all I see are flames. I can still see smoke in the corners.

I’m not even really listening to the news report anymore—I’ve seen it so many times by now, I know it by heart.“—no suspects have been confirmed, but authorities believe the fire at the boutique was intentional…”I take another slow sip of wine, smiling a little as I watch the screen. The anchor’s serious voice tries to make sense of something they’ll never fully understand.“You should’ve stayed away, Emily,” I say to myself. I swirl the glass in my hand. “Now you’ll see what happens when you take what’s mine.”Then, my phone buzzes on the counter. The sound cuts through the silence.I pick it up.Unknown Number: Emily survived. My heart stops.I stare at the words for a second before they really hit me. Then the glass slips out of my hand.I throw it and it smashes against the wall. I barely notice the shards on the floor. All I can think about is that one line. She survived.I feel heat rise thro

DANIEL'S POV The minutes tick by slowly I stand near the corkboard, looking at every photo of Lina that I've managed to get. I tap my fingers on the table nearby, waiting impatiently for Carlos to get here. Just when I'm about to call him to ask where he is, I hear the slam of a car door outside. That has to be him. Finally.Carlos walks in nearly an hour late, and the second I see him, my chest tightens. Not from anger. From worry. My little brother looks like hell. Dark circles bruise the skin under his eyes, there's something that looks like soot on his jacket, and his eyes are red—bloodshot from exhaustion, worry, or maybe crying. He looks stiff, like every muscle in his body has forgotten how to relax. He doesn’t say hello. Doesn’t ask what’s going on. His voice is low as he walks forward. "Talk.” he says. I nod once and step away from the corkboard. “I’ve been doing some research on Lina.”Carlos frowns, confused. “Why?”“Because,” I say, “you’re too naïve to see that Lina

DANIEL’S POVThe room is dark. Papers are spread across the table like a crime scene—photos, documents, notes scribbled in red ink, and right in the center… her face.Lina.The corkboard is above my desk. Red string crisscrosses the board, pinning together events that, at first glance, seem unrelated. But I see it now. A pattern. Her name, her face, connected to outbursts, fights, assaults and now…I stare down at the folder in my hand—its edge creased from how tightly I’m gripping it. My thumb brushes over the bold red stamp on the front: Sealed Record. It took an old favor and an uncomfortable call to a cop I hadn’t spoken to in five years to get this. But it was worth it.I open the folder slowly and my eyes scan the page.Name: Lina Veronica HaleDOB: 09/14/1996Juvenile Record: SealedCharges: Arson, Harassment, Assault, StalkingI whisper to myself, breath catching in my throat. CARLOS’ POVThe sirens keep on blaring. Red lights reflect across the pavement as the ambulance doors fling open. I’m already running. My lungs are burning and my chest is heaving harder than it ever has before.“Emily!” I choke out her name, over and over. My throat is raw from smoke and yelling. My legs burn as I chase after the paramedics pushing her through the automatic doors of the ER.She looks lifeless. Her face is pale. Her lips are slightly parted and her hair clings to her face in sweaty knots. I can’t even tell where she’s burned, or if she’s burned, because everything just looks wrong. Like the life has been sucked out of her body and she’s just barely holding on.My heart crashes against my ribs like it wants to break free.“Please—Emily, baby, stay with me,” I beg, my voice cracking. The paramedics say something into their radios. The doors fling open for them, but a nurse blocks me from going in.I barely notice Bridget until she grabs my arm. She’s crying. Her fingers

CARLOS’ POVThe boardroom is almost silent except for the voices echoing off the table. The long table in front of me is filled with laptops, folders, and untouched glasses of mineral water. One by one, the board members present their reports—logistics, international expansion strategies, profit margins. I nod, make notes, ask questions. I’m doing everything I’m supposed to do.But I’m not here.My mind keeps drifting. Sliding back to her.To Emily. Her soft laugh, the smell of her hair when she curls into me, the way her fingers trace lazy patterns on my chest when she thinks I’m asleep. The way she smiles when she talks about her designs. The baby. Our baby.Last night keeps replaying in my mind. The way her lips trembled right before I kissed them. How she held onto me like she needed me to breathe. I haven’t stopped thinking about her since I left her this morning with a kiss on her forehead, promising I’d be done early today. A promise I’m already breaking.“Mr. Carter?” someone
