Ashley

“If this isn’t Ashley!”

Amy’s voice carried across the pavement before I could even decide whether to turn around.

I closed my eyes briefly.

Oh, good. The circus had noticed me.

“What are you doing standing out here in the open?” she asked, looking me up and down. “Are you homeless now or something?”

Josh stood beside her, hands in his pockets, looking like he had accidentally stumbled into a comedy show and was waiting for the punchline.

Amy tilted her head. “Well, it’s good to see you’re still alive. I was beginning to wonder if you’d gone off somewhere to wallow in depression.”

I stared at her.

She gave a little laugh, apparently pleased with herself.

“Actually, I’m surprised. The other day, you were acting like your entire world had ended. You were crying and making such a scene. But look at you now, walking around like nothing happened.” She glanced at Josh, then back at me. “Did you truly love him, Ashley? Because you seem to be doing just fine without him.”

I almost admired her confidence. Imagine being the person who helped break someone’s heart and then having the audacity to question whether the person was heartbroken enough for your liking.

“Are you finished?” I asked.

“Not quite.”

Of course.

Josh finally decided to contribute.

“I’m sure you accepted the surrogacy gig despite all that holier-than-thou nonsense you were spouting the other day.”

My stomach tightened.

He chuckled. “I heard from a nurse at your brother’s hospital that he needs a lot of money urgently for his treatment. And there’s no way you can get that kind of money except through the program.”

I blinked.

Hold on.

Was this man keeping tabs on me?

I looked him straight in the eyes. “Are you keeping tabs on me? Are you that obsessed with me? I thought Amy was your new plaything.”

Amy’s expression changed instantly.

“Plaything?” she repeated, her voice rising. “Who exactly are you calling a plaything? Me?”

She looked at Josh as though she expected him to intervene, then turned back to me.

“Honestly, Ashley, that definition suits you far more than it suits me. Joshhh, listen to her!”

I nearly laughed.

The dramatic pronunciation of his name was a nice touch. Very Shakespearean. If Shakespeare had written about two people sharing one brain cell.

“If that makes you sleep better at night, go ahead,” I said. “It’s just your turn.”

Her mouth fell open.

“Anyways,” I continued, turning back to Josh, “like I was saying, are you keeping tabs on me? Are you that obsessed?”

“In your wildest dreams.” He scoffed. “I was at the hospital for something else and happened to find out. Don’t flatter yourself.”

Oh.

That was almost worse.

For a brief, embarrassing second, I’d entertained the possibility that he was still interested enough to check on me. Instead, I’d apparently been a random piece of information he’d picked up while going about his business.

I gave a small smirk.

“Better,” I muttered.

“What’s better?”

“Nothing.”

Because apparently, even after everything, a tiny, delusional part of me still wanted to believe I mattered to him.

Pathetic. I knew.

But I wasn’t about to let either of them know that.

Besides, there was the little matter of my new job.

I couldn’t tell them about it. The woman who’d explained the arrangement had been very clear that I wasn’t to disclose anything about the program. And I couldn’t afford to jeopardise the contract, not when Jason’s treatment depended on the money.

So I straightened my shoulders and gave Josh my most unimpressed look.

“Hellooooo. Yes, my brother needs money. A lot of it, actually. But the last thing I’d do is accept a program that came from you. I’d rather chew glass and starve to death.”

Amy snorted.

“Please. You’re lying.”

“Am I?” I widened my eyes. “Wow. I didn’t realise you were suddenly an expert on my finances. Should I send you my bank statements next time?”

“Josh said—”

“Josh says a lot of things. Most of them are false.”

Josh’s expression hardened.

I continued before he could interrupt.

“Look, I know you think you have me all figured out, but you don’t. Whatever arrangement you think I’ve entered, I haven’t. And even if I were desperate enough to consider something like that, I certainly wouldn’t do it because you told me to.”

I held his gaze.

“So you can stop congratulating yourself. You didn’t make this decision for me.”

Technically, he had nominated me without my consent, which was a separate issue entirely. But he didn’t need to know anything about what had happened after that.

Not a word.

Josh studied my face for a moment, then gave me a strange look.

“Whatever.”

He stepped closer.

I instinctively stiffened, but he leaned towards my ear anyway.

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Not bad

Skyler I had been following the selection process rather closely, mostly because I wanted to know exactly what my mother was planning. If she was determined to go ahead with this ridiculous arrangement, I wanted to know who she intended to bring into my life. More importantly, I wanted to know whether anyone involved in the programme had connections to the people who had orchestrated my accident. I was still investigating an attempted murder. I had no intention of allowing my mother’s well-funded reproductive experiment to become another avenue through which someone could get close enough to finish what they had started. So, I watched. I paid little attention to the medical appointments beyond the information I considered necessary. I was not particularly interested in studying a room full of women, and I certainly had no intention of developing an interest in any of them. I was married. Happily, as far as I was concerned. And I was still very much in love with my wife

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   IVF

SkylerNow, before you misunderstand that last statement, let me make something clear.Bri Tylan is the love of my life. She has been for as long as I can remember.Bri and I have known each other since we were teenagers. We grew up as neighbours, and our families were familiar with each other long before either of us understood what it meant to fall in love. Bri practically had unrestricted access to our home. She would walk in without announcing herself, raid our kitchen, complain about whatever was bothering her and somehow convince everyone that she had done us a favour simply by showing up.I used to pretend she was a nuisance. She knew I was lying. We became friends first. Then best friends. The sort of friends who knew each other’s habits, fears and embarrassing childhood stories. She knew when I was angry even when I said nothing. She knew when I needed space and when I needed someone to stay. When things were difficult, Bri was there. When I had something worth celebrating,

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Unfortunately

SkylerMy name is Skyler Tylan.I’m sure you’ve heard of me by now. The comatose billionaire heir.An unfortunate accident. That’s what they’ve been calling it.Personally, I find the description rather amusing. There was nothing unfortunate about the timing. And I’m beginning to suspect there was very little accidental about it either. For the past three months, my life has been a series of carefully disguised warnings. A tyre bursting on a highway. Brake failure in a vehicle that had passed inspection less than twenty-four hours earlier. A security breach at one of our private residences. Minor incidents, individually speaking. The sort of things people dismiss as bad luck.I didn’t.When you’re preparing to assume control of one of the largest conglomerates in the world, you learn to pay attention to details other people overlook. Especially when those details keep appearing around you.Tylan Holdings was approaching a major succession announcement. The position of chairman was du

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Hired surrogate

Ashley Oh, absolutely not.My brain finally sprang into action.Whatever else happened, I could not allow this situation to escalate before I explained myself.I had already signed a contract. I had accepted the money. Twenty-five million dollars had already entered my account, and a significant portion of it had gone towards Jason’s treatment.I could not afford to have somebody misunderstand my presence, report me to the hospital, and create a scandal before I had even completed the first week of this arrangement.I took a small step forward.“Wait!”She paused and looked at me.I straightened.“I’m Ashley. I’m the hired surrogate.”Silence.For one beautiful, terrifying second, neither of us said anything. Then she gave a small nod.“So they’ve moved quickly already.”I wasn’t sure what to make of that response. There was no obvious shock. No dramatic gasp. No immediate demand for an explanation. She simply said it as though she’d expected something of the sort to happen eventuall

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Eighth wonder

Ashley She laughed. Not a polite little laugh. Not the kind of laugh people gave when they were trying to be civil despite finding something amusing.No.She laughed hysterically.I stood there with the cloth still in my hand, watching her as though she’d suddenly started speaking a language I didn’t understand.“I’m sorry,” she said, still laughing. “Did you just ask me who I am?”Her eyes travelled from my face to Skyler, then back to me.“Me? You’re asking me who I am? A nobody is standing here kissing my comatose husband in his hospital room, and somehow, I’m the one who needs to introduce herself?”She laughed again, shaking her head in disbelief.“I guess this is the eighth wonder of the world, wouldn’t you agree, Miss?”I opened my mouth.Closed it.Opened it again.Nothing came out.Oh.Oh, wow.Okay.First of all, nobody was kissing anybody.Second of all, comatose husband?Third of all—I finally took a proper look at her. And, oh my God.Oh. My. God.She was a goddess.I w

  • Pregnant by the Billionaire in a Coma   Who are you

AshleyI gathered the supplies I needed and washed my hands. Before yesterday, I hadn’t imagined that personal care would become a regular part of my daily routine. Now, apparently, it was part of my job description. Twice a day, I was expected to help clean a grown man who happened to be one of the richest people in the country. Life really did have a sense of humour. A questionable one, but still. I approached his bed and hesitated. “Okay, Skyler. I’m about to touch you now.” I paused. “Yes, I know. You can’t hear me. And no, I don’t know why I’m asking for permission from a man who can’t answer me. But I’ve watched enough Korean medical dramas to know that doctors announce what they’re about to do before they start poking people. So I’m following protocol.” I glanced at his face. “Except you’re not my patient, technically. You’re my employer. And you’re unconscious. This arrangement is getting more confusing by the day.” I exhaled. “Anyway, let’s just do this.” I began w
