Elowen:

Zarek didn't leave my side that evening, not once, not even when my mother finally excused herself, exhausted, murmuring something about giving us space before slipping quietly from the room.

We sat by the small window in my chamber, the same one I'd watched countless dark nights pass through alone, only now his presence filled the space beside me, careful and uncertain, like he wasn't sure yet how much room he was allowed to take up.

"Can I ask you something?" he said finally, breaking the long, aching silence sitting between us.

"You can ask," I said. "I don't promise gentle answers."

Something almost like a smile flickered across his face, there and gone. "I wouldn't trust you if you gave me one." He hesitated, his eyes dropping briefly to my stomach before finding mine again. "How are you feeling? Truly. Not the answer you give everyone else out of habit."

The question caught me somewhere tender, unprepared.

No one had asked me that so plainly since this whole nightmare began, everyone else wanting to know what I'd decided, what I needed, what the pack required of me. Not simply how I felt.

"Tired," I admitted, my voice thinning. "Frightened, most nights. Some mornings I forget for just a moment, before everything comes rushing back all at once, and I have to remember it all over again like it's brand new."

I pressed a hand low against my stomach, feeling the small, steady flutter beneath my palm. "But some days, like right now, feeling this, I think maybe I could survive anything, as long as I get to keep feeling this."

Zarek's breath caught, rough and unsteady. "Can I—" He stopped himself, uncertain.

"You can," I said softly, and guided his hand gently to rest beside mine.

His whole body went still the instant he felt it, that small, persistent flutter beneath his palm, and I watched something break open across his face, wonder and grief tangled together so completely I couldn't tell where one ended and the other began.

"I missed this," he whispered. "I missed everything. Every single day I was gone, wondering if I'd ever get to feel this."

"You made that choice," I reminded him, gently but without softening it. "Every single day you stayed away was a day you chose duty over showing up for this."

"I know." His hand didn't move from my stomach, even as his voice cracked around the admission. "I'm not asking you to forget that. I'm only telling you I felt the cost of it every single day, whether you believe that or not."

We sat there a long while, his hand resting against the life we'd made together, neither of us speaking, both of us simply feeling the weight and the wonder of it settling slowly between us.

A sharp knock broke the quiet.

Selene stood in the doorway, her face carrying the particular exhaustion of someone who had spent the last hour fighting a battle none of us had witnessed.

"We need to talk," she said, her eyes moving between the two of us. "All three of us."

Zarek rose immediately, some old instinct of duty pulling him upright even now. "What did she say?"

"She's furious. Rightfully so." Selene stepped fully into the room, closing the door behind her. "Her father wants a formal accounting once he's well enough to receive one. An apology, publicly given, and compensation for the damage this has done to their family's standing."

"And if I refuse?" Zarek asked quietly.

"Then Alpha Thornwood withdraws his pack's support from our alliance entirely," Selene said flatly. "After the attack, after everything we've already lost, we cannot afford that kind of isolation right now. You know that as well as I do."

I felt something cold settle low in my chest. "So he wants you to apologize for loving me."

"No." Zarek turned to me, his voice steady despite everything crumbling around us. "He wants me to apologize for the dishonesty. For letting his daughter believe in a future I already knew I couldn't give her honestly."

His jaw tightened. "That is a debt I actually owe. Loving you was never the mistake in any of this."

Selene watched the exchange with something unreadable moving behind her eyes. "There's more," she said. "Aria proposed something before she left for the guest quarters. A condition."

"What condition?" I asked, dread coiling tighter.

"She wants you present," Selene said, looking directly at me now. "At the formal apology. Standing beside Zarek, in front of her father, in front of witnesses from both packs."

Her voice softened, just slightly. "She said, and I quote, she wants everyone to see exactly who he chose, so no one can pretend later that this was ever some small, forgettable mistake."

My whole body went rigid. "She wants to humiliate me."

"Maybe," Selene admitted honestly. "Or maybe she wants the truth spoken plainly, once, in front of everyone, so it stops being whispered about in corners. I genuinely don't know which. Perhaps even she doesn't fully know."

I turned to Zarek, searching his face for some sign of what he wanted, what he believed I should do.

"I won't ask you to do this," he said quietly. "If you refuse, I'll find another way. I mean that completely."

"But you want me there," I said, reading it plainly beneath his careful restraint.

"I want you there," he admitted, his voice rough. "I want everyone in that room to understand exactly what I chose, and why. But I won't force that weight onto you. You've carried enough already."

I sat with the decision a long moment, my hand still resting low against my stomach, feeling that small, steady flutter beneath my palm, a reminder of exactly what, and who, I was truly deciding for.

"I'll go," I said finally, my voice trembling but certain. "Not for her. Not even for you, entirely. For this child, who deserves a mother who stood up and was seen, rather than one who hid in shame for the rest of her life."

Something fierce and proud moved across Zarek's face. "Elowen—"

"Don't," I said, cutting him off gently. "Don't thank me yet. I'm still furious with you. That hasn't changed just because I'm choosing to stand beside you in front of strangers."

"I wouldn't dream of thanking you," he said softly. "I know exactly what this is costing you to agree to."

Selene watched us both for a long moment, something almost gentle passing behind her usually guarded eyes. "The apology is set for three days from now," she said. "That gives us little time to prepare, and even less time for either of you to be anything less than steady when it happens."

"We'll be ready," Zarek said.

"I hope so," Selene said quietly, moving toward the door.

She paused there, glancing back at me one final time. "For what it's worth, Elowen, I don't think Aria fully hates you. I think she hates the position she's been forced into, and you simply happen to be standing where she can see it clearest."

She left before I could respond, the door clicking shut softly behind her.

Zarek reached for my hand, and this time I let him take it, though I couldn't yet bring myself to hold on tightly in return."Three days," I said quietly, staring at nothing.

"Three days," he echoed. "Whatever happens in that room, I promise you won't be standing there alone."

I wanted desperately to believe him. Some small, exhausted part of me almost did.

Outside my window, the first stars emerged over the grounds, steady and indifferent, watching over a night that would not last nearly long enough.

In three days, all of us would stand in the same room, and nothing said there could be unsaid again.

  • Pregnant by the Luna's Brother    Chapter 8-What the Silence Cost

Elowen: The front door opened, and every sound in that hallway seemed to drop away at once. Zarek stepped through it slower than I remembered him moving, one hand braced against the frame like his legs hadn't fully forgiven him yet for the journey, the same frame he used to walk through every weekend for training, back when his only reason for being in this house was duty to the pack's warriors, not to me. He was thinner. There was a fresh scar cutting along his jaw, still pink, still healing, and for one shattering second I couldn't reconcile the man standing there with the one who had knocked on my door with wine in his hands, careless and warm and certain of nothing but wanting me. His eyes found mine first, before anyone else's, before Aria's, before Ronan's, and something in his whole body seemed to buckle with relief. "Elowen." My name in his mouth undid something in my chest I'd spent weeks bracing shut. Then his gaze moved, and landed on Aria, standing rigid beside me,

Elowen:The carriage door had barely closed before Aria was already walking toward the house, her steps quick and deliberate, nothing hesitant about her at all.I met her in the front hall, my mother close behind me, both of us still catching our breath from how fast we'd moved to get there. Aria was younger than I expected, sharp-featured, dressed in traveling clothes finer than anything I'd ever touched, her eyes finding mine instantly, cutting straight through every wall I tried raising in the half-second before she reached me."You're her," she said. "I'm Elowen." My voice came out steadier than I felt."Zarek's mother wrote to my father," Aria said, watching my face for a reaction. "Told him you're pregnant."She paused, letting the words settle over me like a slap. "She thought we deserved the truth," she said. "Not rumor.""I know exactly who you are." Her gaze moved over me slowly, taking in every inch, my plain servant's dress, my swollen stomach, the tear tracks still dryin

  • Pregnant by the Luna's Brother    Chapter 6- What the Letter Held

Elowen: My mother's hands shook as badly as mine when she finally set the letter down on the small table between us. "Do you want me to leave you alone with it?" she asked softly. I shook my head. I needed her there, close enough to touch, while I broke a seal I had waited two long weeks for. The parchment felt heavier than it should have, as though the words inside had weight of their own.I turned it over once, twice, delaying the moment on purpose, some small, frightened part of me still able to pretend, for just a breath longer, that nothing inside it could hurt me. The handwriting was uneven, hurried in places, as though his hand hadn't quite obeyed him while he wrote it. Elowen, I keep starting this letter over. Every version sounds like an excuse, and you deserve better than that. I was promised to someone before I ever knew what promises cost. For two weeks with you, I forgot that promise existed. I have never forgotten anything so completely, or so selfishly. I am not

  • Pregnant by the Luna's Brother    Chapter 5- News From Thornwood

Elowen: I did not sleep that night. I sat by my small window instead, watching the dark outside for any sign of movement, any rider coming up the road, anything at all that might tell me whether the man I had loved was alive or already gone from this world entirely.By morning, word had spread through the entire pack house.I heard it in fragments, passed servant to servant in hurried, frightened voices, rogue wolves, an ambush, half the Thornwood guard dead before sunrise. No one seemed to know anything certain about Zarek himself, only rumors circling one another, each one worse than the last.It was Ronan who finally came to tell me the truth, just past midday, his face carrying an exhaustion I had not seen even when he first found that pouch in my room."They found him," he said, before I could even ask. "Alive."My whole body went weak with relief, my knees nearly giving out beneath me. "Where? Is he hurt?""Badly," Ronan admitted, choosing his words carefully. "He took a wound

  • Pregnant by the Luna's Brother    Chapter 4- Letter To The Luna

Elowen:The guard's news that night was grim, though not yet about Zarek directly.Rogue activity had been spotted stirring near the Thornwood border, unconfirmed, unsettling, enough to put Ronan on edge but not enough, yet, to explain the quiet dread that had already begun settling over the house like something waiting to happen. He left before dawn to see to it himself, and two more long, aching days passed before I saw Selene again. When she finally came, she did not knock the way Ronan had. She simply opened the door and stood there, still wearing the same travel coat she seemed to wear like armor even inside her own home."You knew," she said. Not a question."I found out four days ago. From Alpha Ronan," I said. Her hands were clasped in front of her, and I watched her fingers curl around each other, then release, like she was holding something back by force. She stepped inside and closed the door behind her, quieter than I expected. "My mother arranged that engagement when Za
