The nurse helped me sit up and gave me a paper towel to wipe the remaining gel from my stomach.

“Take it easy today,” the doctor said, peeling off her gloves. “If the pain gets worse or you notice any bleeding, come straight back.”

“I will. Thank you.”

She nodded and walked out of the cubicle.

I pulled my blouse down over my stomach. My mother picked up my bag from the chair and offered me her arm.

“Ready to go?”

“Yes.”

My legs were still a bit shaky as I stepped down, but she held me steady un

AdrielI kept my eyes half shut and my voice low."The woman from earlier," I said. "She was pregnant. She said I'd held her hand against the baby."My mother didn't blink, but a muscle along her jaw jumped."A temporary arrangement," she said, her voice smooth as oil, recovering before the silence could swallow her. "Marcus's associates were threatening the company's freight docks, Adriel. That girl came to your office yesterday afternoon, begging for protection from her ex-husband. You felt responsible, since he once worked for our company. You gave her shelter in the tower until the police could pick him up. That's all.""That's all?" I looked her dead in the eye."Yes," Selena added, stepping closer, her voice thick with rehearsed concern. "You were being noble, Adriel. You're always trying to save everyone. But she took advantage of your kindness. She followed your car, sneaked onto this ward, and the moment you woke up confused, she tried to claim you'd made promises to her. And

**Adriel**My skull felt like it had been split open with a rusty chisel.Every flicker of the light overhead sent a stab of fire through my left temple. The monitors hummed steadily, and the sound grated on my nerves.Beside the bed, Selena leaned over me with a warm, damp cloth and a look of tearful devotion. Her sweet jasmine perfume filled the air around my face, a little too heavy for a hospital room."Adriel, darling," she whispered, dabbing gently at my forehead. "You gave us such a fright."My first instinct was to pull away. I stopped myself. She was my fiancée, and she had clearly been crying."Thank you," I said. My throat was dry and scratchy from the oxygen tube. "I'm sorry. My head is a mess.""Don't apologize." She smiled and pressed my hand. "Just rest."I let her. But something about it sat wrong. Her fingers were cold, and her eyes kept sliding past mine to the door, then to my mother, as if she were waiting for a signal.Across the room, my mother closed the mahogan

**Gloria**The eastern wing was so quiet that I could hear every step I took, and every one of them hurt.A dull ache throbbed low in my stomach. I kept one arm pressed under my sweater, as if my bare hands could shield the baby from everything that was trying to tear us apart. Clara walked beside me, gripping my elbow with cold, shaking fingers."Gloria, please sit down," she begged, her voice thick with tears. "You're white as a sheet. Look at the sweat on your face.""I'm fine, Mom," I lied through gritted teeth, leaning on the steel railing along the wall. "Just a little farther."Ahead of us, the corridor opened into a wide glass atrium. An older man in a navy robe and slippers was shuffling slowly across it, pushing an IV stand ahead of him. He was pale and a little hunched, but he moved with stubborn, irritable determination.Suddenly, the wheel of his IV stand caught on the rubber strip of a fire door. The pole tipped. His slippers slid on the polished floor, and his hand flai

**Gloria**The cold in Adriel's eyes cut deeper than any blow Marcus had ever landed."I said get away from me," he repeated. His voice was raspy and hard, with no trace of recognition in it.He didn't just look annoyed. He looked disgusted, the way a man looks at a beggar reaching for his sleeve at a red light."Adriel, please..." My voice cracked. My hands shook so badly that my ring clinked against the metal bed rail. "Look at me. Just last night, in the bedroom, you held my hand against our baby. You promised me nobody would look down on us again.""Security!" Victoria's voice cut through the room like a whip. Two uniformed hospital guards walked in, their hands resting on their belts."Remove this woman at once," Victoria said, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at me. "She's upsetting my son right after emergency surgery. She has no authorization to be here""Wait!" I reached for Adriel again. "Adriel, tell them! Tell them who I am!"He didn't look at me. His jaw was set lik

**Gloria**I had checked the wall clock six times in ten minutes. My mother sat at the wide kitchen island with both hands wrapped around a glass of water she hadn't touched. Her eyes kept drifting to the tall windows, where gray clouds rolled slowly over the city."Gloria," she whispered, her voice unsteady. "It's too quiet. A family with this much money doesn't let things go easily."I pressed one hand against my stomach beneath my cardigan. On my other hand, the plain gold ring felt heavy and real.Adriel had stood between me and Marcus. He had faced his mother without blinking. He had called his father and claimed our child without a trace of shame.*"You're my wife now,"* he had said. *"We're in this together."*"He's handling it, Mom," I said.It was almost nine. He had left with his driver to face the board.Suddenly, the phone on the kitchen wall rang, shrill and loud.My mother jumped up, her chair scraping across the marble. I rushed over and answered."Mrs. Gloria!" It was
