Matthew

I can feel that she’s gone before I open my eyes.

The cold breeze washes over me, sending a chill through me and waking me up in a hurry. There’s nothing left of Freya but the slightest indentation in the moss where we made love and just a slight trace of her incredible scent of pine just after a light rain.

Inside, my wolf wails.

The more I wake up and the cobwebs clear from my head, the more I realize how much Freya hates my family. It doesn’t seem right that the Goddess has mated us

FreyaI’m glad to finally get out of this place with the artifacts secured. Throughout the cleanup and cataloging process, Matthew has been an incredible partner. I’m finally starting to feel positive about the Goddess’s choice for me. The long ride home gives me time to think. I recall when I was about eleven or twelve lazing about on the wooden porch at my grandmother’s house. She’d brought me a glass of cold lemonade and sat beside me on her handmade wicker chair, turning to me with that always-knowing look in her eye.“What’s wrong, my little pup?” she asked.“Randolf was mean to me today,” I complained, folding my arms.“Ah,” she said, patting me on the shoulder tenderly. “He is the boy who has been teasing you.”“Yes, and I hate him,” I snapped.“Never say hate, my little pup,” she warned me. “It may turn out that this Randolf is your mate.”“No!” I hollered louder than I’d meant to.“We never know what our future brings, little one,” she said.“Well, if it means that meanie is

Months LaterReeva“I’m going to need at least three formal gowns,” I say, and since talking seems to be steadying my nerves, I keep going. “They’ll be throwing at least that many formal events, one for each baby. And my mother will want to do something special as well. I don’t have that many gowns. I suppose I can buy some there and—”“It’s all right, love.” Axel wraps a comforting arm around me, grasping one of my hands in his to steady it. Warmth and calm rush over me in response. “Trisha is going to be just fine. She has the best healers in all of Green Mountain, and a couple that your mother sent from Dark Forest as well.”Of course, he knows exactly what’s causing me to spiral out of control.“But she’s having three babies at once,” I counter.“Your mother had four,” he reminds me. “The women in your family are incredibly strong, and that includes you.”I can feel my heartbeat calming a little. “I suppose so.”“Are you ready?” he asks.I gaze at my pile of suitcases. “Yes, I thi

MatthewI’ve had enough of waiting. We have adequate warriors in place now to take these people down and get Freya the hell out of here.“Go for the encampment, anyone who looks threatening,” I tell Gunner through the mind-link. “Capture any who surrender. Deal with any who don’t. I’ve got these fucking guards.”“Aye,” he replies simply, then I hear him directing the others. We all charge out of the forest at once, giving them no chance to prepare a defense. I have every confidence that Gunner will take care of the indirect threat, so I run straight toward the guards in front of the building. They shift into scraggly rogues, their postures tentative, frightened. When I’m almost on them, they shift back, holding up their hands in surrender—at least, two of them do, but another one jets off into the forest.Quickly, I weigh my options. I feel Freya’s presence in the building and sense that she isn’t harmed, but just in case, I shift and open the door. Her safety comes first.“Handle the

AxelUp until this moment, there was a part of me that didn’t want to admit my mate was a student, a younger woman. It could cost me the career I’ve worked for, throwing away everything in my life that has led to what I am today. But now I know... I am nothing without Reeva to complete me.The sight of that asshole’s hands squeezing her arm awoke something in me that is much more powerful than my wolf form. I wanted to tear off his hand without even shifting, the reaction was so strong. The thought of someone harming her, even simply leaving a red mark on her arm from the pressure, knocked all the doubt out of me.She is mine, my mate, and I want nothing more than to be with her, whatever it takes. Her jewel-like eyes, bright green and filled with all her knowledge, her experience, her love, look arrow-straight into mine. I feel our souls mixing just from a simple gaze.“Yes, I’m your mate,” she whispers. “And I’ve been waiting for you to admit it.”The teasing lilt in her tone is fol

Reeva“I’d really prefer you not come along,” Axel tells me. I can see the hesitation in his eyes, along with the thread of the mate bond that ties us together. And I can also tell that he wishes he could word that opinion in a much stronger way.“I’d prefer none of this was happening at all,” I counter. “I came here to study, and you came here to teach. I really wish we lived in a world where we could just do that and not have to worry about a bunch of guys plotting to take over the kingdom. But they are. And we’re talking about my sister and her mates, so that involves me. And since you’re a castle liaison, it involves you, too. So, I’m going with you.”He nods once, his lips pursed so tight they’re practically white, but he doesn’t argue anymore. When we’re out in the hallway, he finally says a few words, but they’re in the mind-link. “Will you at least agree to stay close to me?”I practically jump at the sudden link in my mind. Of course. He’s an Alpha. “I don’t know what I’m goi

FreyaI position myself toward the back of my cell, having shifted and dressed in the simple shirt and pants supplied by my captors in the bag the man threw at me. They’ve included women’s underclothes and supplies, which makes me believe someone in their group is female.I’ve gone over every inch of this wall, and none of it is penetrable. A small loose brick in the back corner gave me some hope, but removing it only brought me to thick concrete. So, the only way to escape is to use my head. Two stupid, bumbling guards—they’ll be easy to fool. But the other man seems sharp, cunning. This will only work if he’s out of the picture. It’s hard to force back my smile when the two guards walk in alone.“Ah, look,” the skinny man says. “She shifted. Damn, she’s a looker.”The bald one whistles, long and slow. “Oh, my. She is, isn’t she?”“Can we have fun with her, Vern?” the skinny guy asks. “She looks fun.” His last words are a disgusting mix of lust and laughter.I force back the bile thr
