Chapter 1

Janet Emery brought me back to her place.

I looked around at a house that felt totally unfamiliar, with no sign that I had ever lived there. I kept my head down and fiddled with my phone.

"Do you want to get some rest first?" Janet asked softly.

She really looked like someone who cared about me.

"Okay."

I nodded and used the amnesia excuse to have her take me to the bedroom.

When Janet saw me settle in, she finally relaxed.

I closed my eyes. The air was filled with her scent—unfamiliar but pleasant. After a while, I heard a voice I knew.

"Jan, you're my best friend. Can you pretend to be his fiancee for now?"

When I heard Tiffany Swain's voice, I sat up and looked toward the bedroom door that wasn't fully closed.

"Aren't you worried that he might get his memory back someday?" Janet asked.

I could tell that she thought I was already asleep. The two of them were openly talking on speakerphone.

"Oh, come on. If he gets his memory back, I'll just sweet-talk him, kiss him, hug him a bit, and he'll be fine. He loves me too much to ever leave."

Tiffany sounded all sugary, but it cut straight through me.

So that was it. I never really mattered to her. I loved her too much, and that made me something she could toss away.

"I've just been with him for a long time, and I'm bored. I need something new and a little room to breathe. It'll pass soon. I know you can't stand Chester, but just do me this favor, okay?"

I didn't hear Janet's answer. She kept moving farther away with her phone in hand.

I straightened up, opened the door, and slowly walked toward her on the balcony. I wondered if popping up out of nowhere would freak her out. That thought crossed my mind with a mean little thrill.

But Janet seemed to sense something and turned right into my gaze. She hung up fast, walked over, and wrapped her arms around my waist.

"Didn't you say you wanted to rest? So how are you awake already?"

She nuzzled into my chest, like we were a loving, engaged couple who'd been together forever.

"I'm kinda hungry," I said, and I smiled, but my eyes didn't.

Janet didn't seem to notice and asked, "So what do you want to eat? Scrambled eggs on toast?"

That caught me off guard.

I liked scrambled eggs on toast, and even Tiffany didn't know that.

"Okay."

I nodded, then awkwardly pulled her hand away and sat at the table.

Janet turned and went into the kitchen without uttering a single word. Watching her tie on an apron and cook as if it were second nature made everything feel unreal.

Wasn't this exactly what I'd pictured married life looking like? I never thought I'd see that coming from my actual fiancee's friend.

Before long, a plate of scrambled eggs on toast was set in front of me. Janet propped her chin on her hand and smiled at me.

My heart skipped a beat. I lowered my head and took a bite right away. I didn't expect it to taste that good.

"Does it taste good?"

I didn't answer, but my body did.

Seeing me rush through it, Janet leaned closer and brushed a bit of egg off the corner of my mouth with her fingertip.

"No one's gonna steal your food, so slow down, or people will think I'm starving you."

That sudden intimacy made me purse my lips without thinking. When our eyes met, I could hear a heart pounding hard. I didn't know whose it was.

I looked away and tipped my head back, stiff and awkward.

Seeing I was still pulling back, Janet smiled and brushed a light kiss on my forehead.

"It's okay. I know you don't remember me yet, but we can take it slow, okay?"

I looked into her kind eyes and nodded without really knowing why.

What I couldn't understand was that, after all these years together, Janet had never shown any romantic interest in me. If anything, everything she did made it look like she hated me, just like Tiffany said.

I stared straight at Janet.

So which one of her was real?

"Chester, I'm sorry. I lied to you. I'm your real fiancee, not Janet."The moment Tiffany finished, Janet tightened her hold on my hand.I stayed quiet and looked up at Tiffany, her eyes brimming with tears. After a long beat, I smirked. "Is that so?"I threaded my fingers through Janet's and said, "I've got amnesia. I don't remember anything from before, so why would I take your word for it just because you said so?"Tiffany obviously hadn't expected me to push back that hard. She stood there stunned, unsure of what to say.All she could get out was, "What I'm saying is true.""If what you're saying is true, then why would you pass me off to someone else? Was it because you didn't want me, or because you figured I wasn't good enough to be your fiance?"I kept pressing forward as Tiffany backed away, until her waist bumped the swing in the garden. And still, she couldn't find the words. Her lips parted and closed again. All she managed in the end was a wounded, "I'm sorry."T

In the end, I followed Tiffany outside.Janet and Mervin trailed right behind us. Tiffany was so focused on coming clean that she never noticed them.We made our way to the back garden, where Mervin and I had just been.I studied the face that used to make my heart flutter and said quietly, "Just say what you have to."I really did love Tiffany, but after she let me down one too many times, my heart just stopped racing for her.I'd seen how warm and attentive she was with Mervin. I'd also noticed every way Janet showed up for me.Maybe I even owed Tiffany a thank-you for finally helping me see the whole picture. I finally realized that real love meant that you couldn't bear the thought of hurting the person you loved.Tiffany pursed her lips, looking a little guilty but still trying to hold her ground. "Then promise me you won't be mad.""And if I don't?"Startled, Tiffany looked up, staring at me like she couldn't believe what she was hearing. She couldn't understand why I w

"Suit yourself," Janet said. She and Tiffany ended it on a sour note.I couldn't tell if I was reading too much into it. After their conversation, Janet kept looking at me like she didn't want to let me go.Was she afraid I'd end up back at Tiffany's side?Janet weighed her words. "Chet, after all this time, how do you feel about me?"It was the first time since I'd known her that she'd spoken so cautiously.I played dumb, swirled my wine, and took a small sip. "What do you mean?"I blinked in mock confusion, my gaze settling on her fingertips, which were drained white from the tension.I smiled. "We're engaged, so of course we get along."Instead of easing up, Janet grew more nervous. She pursed her lips and looked down. "If, just if, one day you get your memory back and realize that I'm not the fiancee you remember, what would you do?""What could I do?"I pinched her cheek, feeling how tense she was."You're my fiancee."When I met her eyes, my focus slipped for a secon

I stayed calm, and that only made Mervin frown harder. He stared straight at me. "Do you know who Tiffany's fiance is?"The air went quiet.I let out a short laugh. "How would I know? I'm not that close to her."And honestly, that was how it felt. I wasn't close to Tiffany anymore. We had been together for years. I thought we loved each other and were inseparable. But in the end, she pushed me away for the thrill of something new.Mervin visibly relaxed when he heard my answer."You actually know the guy," he said.My stomach dropped. What was he getting at? Had he figured out that I was faking the memory loss?I kept my expression steady and leaned into the excuse. "But I don't remember."Mervin didn't respond. He just stared straight at me.The longer he looked, the more uncomfortable I felt. I finally broke eye contact and looked toward the garden. He finally said, "That guy is you.""What do you mean?"My heart was pounding, but I didn't let it show. This was suppos

The race kicked off. Tiffany held Mervin tight from the back seat.Janet and I couldn't ride, so we watched from the stands. The group deliberately saved us the center seats. Their eyes kept drifting to me like they were waiting for a joke.I feigned ignorance, keeping my eyes on the two riders up front.Tiffany held on to Mervin's waist as the bike sped off, her hair whipping in the wind. The bikes battled for the lead, and Mervin came out on top.The bike barely stopped when Tiffany yelled, "That was incredible! This kind of freedom feels amazing!"She glanced at me, snorting dismissively, and said, "I just don't know how much longer I'm going to get days like this."Everyone got the dig, but I asked like I didn't get it. "Why not?"Tiffany smiled when she saw my innocent look and said, "Yeah, because my fiance is strict as hell."She cocked a brow at me.My eyes widened as I kept moving closer while her frown deepened. As I leaned in, there was stupid hope in Tiffany's eye

Blaming it on the alcohol, I lifted my head and kissed Janet. The second our lips touched, her eyes went wide. Then she took over and wrapped her arms around my neck. Things heated up fast between us.It took a long moment before we finally pulled apart.Janet's eyes flickered, bright as she looked at me. "Chet, I'm really happy tonight."She was clearly saying more than just the words. My hand at my side curled into a fist on its own. What Janet said didn't match her actions. She said she hated me, but she never pushed me away, and even now, she was letting this happen.I couldn't make sense of it.Back when I was with Tiffany, Janet hated me. No matter how I acted or how much I tried to win her over, she kept me at arm's length. She even mocked my relationship with Tiffany, saying we'd never last. That was why I used to avoid her whenever I could. But after I lost my memory, and Tiffany handed me over to her, she flipped into a whole different person. Was Janet doing this
