Two pairs of Jade eyes under overly long chestnut hair, Lake and Storm observed their mother who hadn't stopped pacing and making hand gestures while murmuring to herself. Her hair, same shade with her sons, bristled against her shoulders and the folds of her full A line dress danced about her ankles.
A small explosion had occured but luckily, everyone wasn't at home. Why would anybody want to attack the Richards? They were sure it was a threat because of the little note found atop the ashes of their house and that was what really scared Mrs. Richards.
She had specifically stayed under the radar and away from the spotlight when her husband had passed away leaving her with two sons and a daughter but now it seemed she was being pulled back into that same spotlight she was trying to escape.
"Mom, please calm down." Strom's rush baritone voice rang out in an effort to calm his mother but he knew it was useless. Whenever Sara Richards started panicking, nothing could calm her down. Not even her first sons.
"Someone is out to get us and it's eating me up that I won't be able to protect you." She confessed and turned to get a good look at her sons whose identical eyes returned the look. A little flick of pride overcame her whenever she looked at the two young boys together. So different yet so alike no matter how much they denied it.
"Okay, new plan." Celia who had been leaning against Lake, typing away at screen of her phone spoke up. Her Rhino grey eyes similar to her father's, shone even under the poor lightning condition of the street lamp. "Let's get a roof over our heads first then order some food rather than standing here and playing detective."
Sara's eyes widened at her youngest daughters order. "Celia, you will control your tongue this instant!" She reprimanded the young girl with untamed irritation lacing her words. "But you do have a point."
Storm wasted no time in opening his phone to search for the closest hotel while Lake rose from the chair to embrace his mother. Of the two boys, Lake was the obvious mamas boy. "Don't worry mom. Maybe we could move to throw this guy off out trail."
Sara's head bobbed at the agreement. Celia was almost through with her current grade and would soon graduate into junior high. What more could she have wanted. "Yes Lake, that's exactly what we're going it do. Move."
"Move?" Celia exclaimed, her fair ponytail bouncing with each word. "Another country? Seriously guys but I like my school and was really looking forward to attending the highschool here. My life is here."
Her lush lips turned upsidedown in a delicate frown with her arms crossed over her generous chest. For a girl her age, she could easily be classed an eighteen year old when she was barely sixteen."We have no other choice and I think a move would actually be good for us." Sara said. "Don't you think so Storm."
Storm's head snapped up from observing the map in his phone. "Uh, yeah. Mom's right cee, moving could throw this guy off our trail." He said before lighter shade of chestnut hair covered his eyes when he focused on the phone in his hands.
"Fine." Lips pressed together, Celia agreed. No matter how much she disapproved, she knew the decision would apply to her no matter how much she screamed and protested. She went back to swiping at the screen of her phone.
"Uh, mom the nearest hotel is just a few blocks away." Storm said, the blue illumination reflecting on his face. Along with their house, everything else in them including cars, laptops and important documents had been destroyed too. "If we start walking now, I think we'll be able to get there before it's too late.
Sara nodded for him to lead the way which he went ahead to do, pausing to raise his head, pointing out landmarks until a two storeyed structure came into view. They checked in, Sara and Celia in a room and Storm and Lake in another. Mr. Richards had left a fortune behind but Sara refused to have a single spoilt bone in the system of her children. She'd sooner loose an arm than let than happen.
With their Nike converses flung carelessly on the floor beside their beds Storm and Lake hopped into bed.
Lake was the first to break the peaceful atmosphere between them." So what do you think about moving to Lakeland, Florida?"
Storm was already used to Lake's questions which had no visible end. From the most dumbest questions down to the most deep head scratching questions concerning life. " I don't see anything wrong with it." He said. "Besides I was kinda already getting bored of this place."
Lake's full lips pressed together again holding off his next question. He really loved this place and they had just started a new semester in senior year. He was just getting to live the life of a senior.
"Go ahead." Storm said. He could always sense when Lake was in discomfort or any other feeling for that matter. Their mother always explained that that was the beauty of having an other half.
Lake's eyes lowered and he slouched. "Do you think the new school'll be as cool as the current one?"
"Heck yeah." He didn't hesitate to respond. "We're the Richards. What could one little move do for us."
The corners of Lake's mouth tugged upwards into a smile similar to that of his brother but brighter with rosier cheeks. People could have easily accused Lake of being too soft while Storm of being too hardheaded but they still got along in perfect harmony.
Storm's body snuggled deeper into the sheets, his secret frown directed to the roof. He sure wasn't used to changes and the thought of a slight change in changing schools and friends didn't sit well with him.
Even with these thoughts running through their minds, they slipped into their subconscious dreams not prepared for tomorrow but as long as they convinced themselves that by sticking together, they could overcome anything.
Oh how little they knew...
"Do you have a date to the dance?" Riley shifted his weight from one foot to the other."Are you asking me to the dance?" Celia stuffed a textbook in her locker. She had to keep her cool. Can't have her slight crush on him show. "Uh Yes, but it's okay if you don't want to go with me, I mean why would you wanna be seen with Humpty Dumpty, I—""Riley." She turned to him staring at his sneakers. "Don't."He sighed. 'I understand. I'll see you around?"She gathered all her courage to make eye contact with him. "I don't have a date to the dance, Riley."The reddish tint of his ears and nose didn't go unnoticed to her while he fiddled with his bag strap. "Is that a yes?""Do you want it to be?""Yes.""Then yes." She smiled through the pain of suppressing a full-blown smile. "I'll go with you."Shock registered on his face for a while but he quickly recovered with a beam. "Awesome, I'll see you
Exams. Why did they exist in the first place? To torture students or to just rate their ability to master topics that wouldn't aid them in the real world? She could go on with being diplomatic about it but it didn't get rid of the fact that this test would crush her. A fat and proud 'D-' on her History paper when she got it back and was called into the principal's office due to the saddening decline in her grades. She could see it all happening."I'm going to flunk the paper, Lani." She groaned into her elbow. "So bad, nobody will see it coming."Her friend's hand come up in a 'hold on' position. "You're going to do fine and will get a C at best."With an eye roll, Adana gave her the stink eye. "Is that meant to make me feel better?"Leilani mirrored her earlier action, not breaking her gaze with her phone. "Sort of?""Wow, I feel so motivated.""That's my girl.""Who are you texting anyway?" Adana scrunched her brows. "No one special," Leilani muttered lowering her head. The slig
Wisps from the cigar end infused the air as she took a big inhale, releasing through her nostrils."How are you gonna pay up the credit?" The man beside her asked, lifting a bottle to his lips. The stars ahead beg for their attention as they conversed. "I don't know but I'll pay up okay? ""Boss is getting suspicious and it gets harder to keep things from him." He lifted his shoulders in what should be a shrug. "I got a few friends that owe me a favour tho, and I can easily pay off the debt myself.""But?" Nothing goes for nothing with the man, she had come to learn over the treacherous path which defined their 'friendship'. "I wanna taste a certain broad." He salivated on his thick lips. "See if bigger is always bett—""Don't."His now empty bottle clanged against the floor. "You don't have a roof over your head, your debt is causing trouble, and did I mention you're homeless?!"Her nose flared, eyes darkening. "You lay a hand on her and there's no telling what I'll do to you.""I do
Slivers of sunlight peeked through the blinds piercing the darkness in the room where she laid in her back staring at the ceiling. She had refused to go out since the interrogation perusing how little she had knowledge of.The smell of pizza filled the room giving it an Italian diner's aroma though the room looked like a birds' nest. Maybe a birds next was a bit more organized than this. The pizza boxes of the past week littered the floor and her bedside table, her phone laid on the bed on airplane mode to elude the numerous messages and phone calls she had been getting.A knock sounded from her door but she groaned and rolled over. Nobody but her had occupied this room since the interrogation last week. It wasn't as if she didn't want to go out but the possibility of Helen jump out from the shadows and attacking her were high. Staying indoors wasn't the safest way to go but the harmless and easiest."You've been in there
Small wisps of smoke emitted out of the cup of cocoa on the breakfast table, the gleam of the sun reflected off it and unto her face. Her fingers swiped and tapped endlessly on the phone in her hand. The clattering behind her seized and the sunlight got blocked out by a particularly curious shadow."You're on that picturegram thingy again." Sarah pointed out and."Instagram, mom." Celia rolled her eyes and narrowed it at a particular post. "It's called ÏÑSTĀGRÂM.""Whatever it's called, you can do it after breakfast and right before first period." Sarah turned away to switch off the cooker. When her daughter continued, she cleared her throat loudly. Celia sighed and dropped her phone on the table."Mom, do you think it's possible to skip P.E?"Sara carried her tray to the table, sitting across her daughter. "Why would you want to skip P.E?"Celia lowered her eyes, playing with a piece of toast. For the past week, she'
She looked so calm and helpless in this state but that illusion contrasted with the truth. Steady beeping being the only sound in the room, kept her company as Adana took in every curve of her soft face. "What have I done to deserve this?" She sighed. "I never went against your rules as a child. Everything changed so fast." In the blink of an eye, the eyelids which were previously closed lifted open and those eyes, a clone of hers stared back at her. The blank expression lasted only a second before morphing to one of anguish and anger. The woman on the bed, dressed in the light hospital gown sat up. "You deserve everything I'm doing to you." She started to rise, not taking mind of the connected drip to her hands. "Every single thing, you deserve!" "No." Adana placed a hand on her chest her eyes widening significantly. Mom couldn't be waking back up and comi
