After snapping a photo of the paper, I looked at the manager. "Do you have any relevant documents explaining this particular rule? It's my first time hearing a hotel fine their customer for so much money over a reason like that."

The man before me scoffed. "There are always customers who come here and act like they're some important, powerful men.

"Mister, you were a disturbance to other customers when you had your bread roll earlier. Please pay the fine and leave the establishment this instant."

The other customers looked bewildered as they gazed in my direction.

I tried my best to stay calm as I replied, "I already ordered some food. I was feeling a bit hungry and…"

"Yes, you've ordered food here. Still, that's one of our hotel's rules. You ought to be fined since you broke the rule. Are you trying to weasel your way out of this now?"

I didn't want to waste my time arguing with him. "Tell Nicki Surridge to come here right now. I'm her brother."

The manager cast me a scornful glance. "Every now and then, some relatives of Ms. Surridge will come and try to take advantage of her just because she owns this hotel. How could she possibly make time to see you when she's busy managing the business?

"Please hurry up and pay the fine. We have a high table turnover rate here. Many customers are waiting to dine here."

Since it was the weekend, the private rooms were all reserved. I was dining in the general dining area.

I only brought my assistant, Luke Bassett, along for the inspection this time. He couldn't help but retort, "How could you say something like that? You can try asking the other customers. We simply had a bread roll. What's wrong with that?"

The manager's face darkened, and he raised his voice. "Security!

"Mister, if you refuse to pay the fine, don't blame me for what I'm about to do next. This is a six-star hotel, so we've only hired the best chefs to work for our restaurant.

"You're bringing down our hotel's class and standard by eating your own bread roll here. Of course, we should fine you for damaging our hotel's image and reputation.

"You shouldn't act like you can afford the food here when you can't. You were provided with free music and free water. You even enjoyed our six-star services while eating the food you brought here. Now, you're trying to deny your mistakes. It's only right that we make you pay the fine!"

So, that was why he fined me when I simply had a bread roll just now.

Luke was about to yell at the man again, but I stopped him. "Hang on. Let me try calling Nicki first."

I dialed Nicki's number and explained the situation to her, "Nicki, what's going on with the hotel management team? The manager has just demanded that I pay 1.28 million dollars in fines!"

To my surprise, Nicki replied calmly, "It's not like you don't have that money. Just give it to him."

I was left slightly flabbergasted. I was so exasperated that I suddenly felt like laughing. "If I don't see your resignation letter within the next ten minutes, there are going to be serious repercussions."

After I ended the call, the manager said mockingly, "Keep on acting. Are you going to report to the police and get a lawyer for yourself next?

"I've seen people like you multiple times before. I saw you taking photos earlier. You must be planning to use those photos to gain people's attention. Our hotel, the Intercontinental Hotel, is a six-star hotel brand with countless nationwide locations.

"You can probably fool one or two rich ladies with the photos you've taken. We're not really asking much from you by making you pay a fine of 1.28 million dollars."

Not only did he make me sound like a greedy, materialistic person, but the manager had also put the other customers who were dining here down.

I took a glance at his name tag. His name was Joseph Hill.

"Mr. Hill, someone like you is more suited to be a fortune teller. Being a manager is a waste of your talent. You could tell so much about me without asking me any questions. You must have some sort of psychic powers!"

Joseph's expression hardened.

I had no desire to drag this out. "I'm paying with my credit card. I'll pay for the fine and the food. I want a receipt, and make sure it's stated in the receipt the amount for the food and fine!"

Joseph paused briefly before he snickered. "Sure. I'll have someone get the receipt for you right away."

Just then, we heard Nicki's voice coming from the restaurant's entrance. "Wait!"

None of our hotel employees had tried to expose or warn about the absurd, shocking things that were happening in our six-star hotel. I reckoned they probably felt threatened by the power and authority Joseph wielded.Yet, to me, these people formed a single unit.Once a fruit's skin started splitting, the inside would soon rot and decompose. That was why I decided to halt the hotel's operation and dismiss all existing employees. After returning to the headquarters, Mom patted my shoulder when she saw the look on my face. "Don't worry. What you did was right."I know you still care about Nicki. However, we can't just pretend like nothing's happened and forgive her when she's done something wrong."I can say confidently that I've treated her like my own ever since we adopted her. I treat you and her equally. However, I was wrong. Perhaps you really can't change certain innate personality traits that one is born with."It was my first time hearing Mom share about Nicki's biological

I chuckled after hearing what Nicki had said. "I've sent the investigation report to our parents and forwarded the email to everyone in our company."The board of directors has just released a new announcement. You should check your email."Nicki was shivering all over. She took her phone out, opened her email, and saw the huge fonts in red."You're hereby dismissed from your position and blacklisted by our company permanently."It was only then that Nicki realized what I told her wasn't some made-up story. Instead, we had officially kicked her out of the company. She would lose everything she used to have.Nicki was visibly shaken. It seemed to have finally dawned on her that no companies would want to hire her, especially after she got kicked out of Hayes Group. She couldn't even go back home now.Realizing her mistakes too late, Nicki scrambled over and clung to my leg."I'm sorry, Gene. I got tricked by that man because of my lack of judgment. I was wrong! Please help me co

"Also, Joseph took a 10% commission from each transaction made at this restaurant. After he started working here, he gained 23 million dollars by imposing fines on our customers."He then transferred five million dollars out of the sum of money he pocketed to a person named Cassidy Cruz. We've notified the relevant authorities to help freeze those accounts."We've also reported this incident to the police and are getting their help to look into the movement of the funds."Other than that, we've also found that our kitchen staff have been replaced. Mr. Sherman has personally handpicked and hired the chefs who work for the restaurant of Intercontinental Hotel. Yet, all those people have been replaced with Joseph's acquaintances."Through our investigation, we've discovered that even our food ingredients have been stolen! During the past six months, Joseph's acquaintances have been secretly swapping the costly food ingredients sent by the headquarters with cheaper ingredients."They

Honestly, it didn't really matter now who did it. Nicki and Joseph were equally at fault for causing this situation.Nicki clenched her fists tightly when she realized I was serious about exposing her wrongdoings. "Was this really necessary, Gene? It was all a misunderstanding. I can just return your money to you. There's no need for all this."I shook my head. "It's too late for that now. If you had returned the money to me earlier or spoken to me nicely and shown me the relevant documents, I wouldn't have made things so difficult for you now."Yet, there's no turning back once an investigation is initiated and all the findings are reported to the headquarters in real-time."Oh, I almost forgot. You're not in the group chat consisting of important members from our headquarters. The board members have just been informed about the problem with the accounts."Nicki turned as pale as a sheet upon hearing my words. She knew that there was no stopping me once I had made up my mind abou

Nicki was my parents' adopted daughter. She took my father, Tim Surridge's, last name.I was the only son of my mom, Patricia. Hayes Group belonged to her. My dad agreed to all of my mom's wishes since he loved her deeply. When I was born, it was decided that I would take Mom's last name.I, Gene Sherman, was the successor of Hayes Group. Everyone in our company knew that. Nicki was well aware that she wasn't cut out for this job. Most of the projects she led ended up incurring losses.Mom had given Nicki the ultimatum by having her manage this hotel. If she still failed to handle the task, Mom would just assign Nicki to a position in the company that wouldn't need her to do much.Nicki hadn't wanted that. Eventually, she had begged me to help her.I had stayed at the hotel for six months in order to help her. Even the waiters could recognize me now.In the beginning, I had done the planning for the promotional activities, the hotel reservation, and the survey questionnaire. I e

I paid the money right away. Then, I asked Joseph to give me the receipt. Once everything was sorted, I looked at the receipt and smirked. I pointed my phone's camera at the receipt."Everyone, do you see this? I came to dine at our hotel's restaurant and received a bill of 6.2 million dollars. Included in it is a fine of 1.28 million dollars that was imposed on me."In the meeting room, the members of the board of directors were all frowning. My mother, Patricia Sherman, said furiously, "Nicki, how dare you do something like that!"Nicki lunged at me and stared wide-eyed at me. "Gene, how could you…""I called for a board meeting. As I've said, there will be serious repercussions if I don't have your resignation letter before the ten minutes are up," I said.Joseph clearly didn't believe what I was saying. He pulled Nicki away and smiled as he looked at the people shown on my phone's screen."You're absolutely shameless. You think you can fool us by hiring a few elderly people t
