Chapter 3

Author: Rivermore
When I got to work the next morning, everyone kept giving me strange looks. Wherever I went, conversations stopped the second I appeared. People who had been chatting a moment earlier would fall silent together and suddenly pretend to be busy.

By the end of the day, the low buzz of whispering behind me still hadn't let up. I finally couldn't take it anymore and turned around.

"If you have a problem with me, say it to my face. There's no reason to gossip behind my back."

No one answered at first.

Then someone muttered, just loud enough for me to hear, "She's all over the trending page, and she's still pretending she doesn't know."

I immediately pulled out my phone.

One of the top trending topics was:

"While You Were Loving Me, You Were Building a Life With Someone Else"

The first post under it was Quentin and Lena's video, followed by a post from an account called Jen's Little World.

It was my private account.

I'd made it years ago to keep track of all the little moments Quentin and I shared. But every time I wanted to post something that showed him, he told me to wait a little longer, so his face had never appeared there.

That hadn't stopped anyone from finding me.

People had picked through every detail in my photos until they uncovered my name, my job, and even my address.

I kept scrolling, my fingers growing colder with every page.

Only after going through everything did I discover that Lena had an account too. She had started hers around the same time I'd started mine.

The difference was that mine had stopped updating.

Hers hadn't.

Her latest post was the ultrasound.

By then, everyone online had decided Lena was the one who deserved sympathy, and I was the other woman.

Someone even dug up my main account and found out Lena and I were best friends.

After that, my social media was completely overrun. Messages kept pouring in faster than I could clear them.

When I got home, my landlord was waiting outside the apartment.

The moment she saw me, she frowned impatiently.

"You need to move out. I'm not renting to you anymore. I've already refunded the rent for the months you won't be staying, so pack your things and go."

"Why..."

"You seriously have to ask?"

She cut me off, her voice rising.

"This whole mess is hurting my business. People keep commenting on my rental listings asking why I'd rent to a homewrecker."

"I'm not one."

"I don't care whether you are or not. You're already affecting me. My other tenants are asking to move out too."

She let out an irritated sigh.

"I'm just a regular person trying to get by. I have kids to support. Please, just do me a favor and leave."

I stood there for a moment and looked past her at the rain pouring down outside.

Then I lowered my eyes.

"Fine."

It wasn't until I started packing that I noticed all of Quentin's clothes were gone.

I looked at the empty side of the closet, then turned back to my own things.

I was leaving sooner or later anyway.

Before I stepped out, I stopped at the door and took one last look at the apartment Quentin and I had shared for five years.

I'd chosen everything in it myself, from the bedside lamps to the mattress, adding each piece little by little until it felt like ours.

Back then, Quentin would hold me and talk about the future with so much certainty.

"Jen, I promise I'll work hard. One day, this place will really be our home."

In the end, he was the first to leave.

Now I was leaving too.

I dragged two suitcases through the pouring rain and tried three hotels before I finally found one with a room left.

Water dripped from my hair and gathered in a small puddle on the floor. Looking at it reminded me of the grease that had congealed in the skillet back at the apartment.

I sat on the edge of the bed with my phone in my hand, shivering so hard I couldn't stop.

Then my phone rang.

It was the HR manager.

"Jenna, the situation online has started to affect the company, so senior management has decided to place you on temporary suspension. Your transfer to Norvale has also been put on hold for the time being. We’ll contact you once a final decision has been made."

The call ended before I had a chance to respond.

I sat there staring at the floor for a long time.

Eventually, I called Quentin.

An automated hospital pharmacy announcement was playing in the background when he picked up.

"So you finally caved and called me?"

He gave a quiet laugh.

"I'll let what you said about breaking up slide. You were angry. But don't do it again."

I dug my nails into my fingertips as my throat tightened.

"Clear up what's happening online."

"What?"

He went silent for a beat, obviously caught off guard.

"Jenna, you didn't call because you wanted to patch things up?"

"Patch things up with you?"

I let out a cold laugh.

"You hid me for five years, then went public with another woman and announced that the two of you were having a baby. You left me looking like I was the one who came between you."

My voice sharpened.

"And you really think I'm calling to get back together with you? Quentin, do you hear how ridiculous that sounds?"

He didn't answer.

After a long silence, Lena's voice came through on his end.

"Quentin, come on. It's my turn."

"Okay, I'm coming," Quentin called back.

Then he spoke to me again, his words coming noticeably faster.

"I'm here with Lena for her prenatal checkup. I'll talk to you when we're done. Stop making a fuss, okay? Be good."

Quentin hurried toward us beneath a black umbrella and stopped directly in our path. His gaze moved from me to the man beside me, and his grip tightened around the handle."Jen," he asked tensely, "who is he?"I looked at him without a trace of emotion."How is that any of your business?"Then I added, "Quentin, do you really think standing out here every day is going to change anything? We're adults. Stop acting so childishly."They were the exact words he'd once said to me.Now I was giving them back to him.His shoulders trembled as he stared at me, unwilling to accept what he was hearing."Jenna, are you really going to give up on me? On everything we've had all these years?"His voice had gone hoarse, the plea in it almost humiliatingly desperate."I went public with the truth. I let the entire internet tear me apart, and I took all the blame. I admitted everything."His voice cracked."All I'm asking is for you to give us one more chance. Forgive me this once. Please...""Quentin

Lena froze. Panic flashed through her eyes, and almost immediately, she tried the same trick she'd used before. Her expression crumpled into one of hurt innocence, and she started to sway backward as if she were about to fall and make it look like I'd pushed her.She barely had time to move before one of my coworkers stepped forward with her phone already recording, holding the camera right in Lena's face."I got the whole thing on video. Jenna didn't even touch you. You were about to throw yourself backward all on your own. What is this, some cheap little skit? At least make it believable."That was all it took. The others immediately joined in, and this time, no one held back."No wonder the story online never quite added up. So this is how you did it? Play the victim, pull little stunts like this, and get everyone to feel sorry for you while you twist the truth?""You spent all that time telling everyone Jenna was the one with a character problem, but from where I'm standing, you're

I'd been in Norvale for a full month before I finally started feeling like I could breathe again. At first, I couldn't get used to the weather. It seemed to rain endlessly, never hard enough to be dramatic, just a constant fine drizzle that hung in the air day after day. The damp gray skies and steady patter against the windows made everything feel heavier somehow. Then, on a rare day off, I slept until I woke naturally.Rain was tapping softly against the glass when I opened my eyes. There was no noise, no chaos, nothing that demanded my attention.I lay there for a while, looking out at the city through the misty rain, and for the first time since I'd arrived, the unfamiliar place didn't feel quite so strange. Instead, it felt peaceful.I'd used my old résumé to find a decent job. By then, the scandal online had already blown over, and no one here knew anything about what had happened to me.I had been nervous when I first started. Every time someone looked at me for a second too lon

Lena jumped and turned around, looking hurt."Why are you yelling at me? I was only trying to help."Quentin took a few steps forward and blocked her path."Don't bother. I'm not staying here much longer anyway."He looked at her steadily."Once I've explained everything to Jen and she's had time to cool off, I'm moving back home."What Quentin didn't know was that because of him, our home no longer existed.By then, the apartment had already been emptied. Everything was gone, and it felt as though our five years together had been cleared away along with it.Lena turned her back to him, and where he couldn't see, resentment flashed across her face.Later, Quentin sat on the edge of the bed, replaying the video I'd made for him over and over.He had actually saved a copy before deleting it from my account. One memory after another passed across the screen to the sweet music I'd chosen, and before he realized it, Quentin was laughing out loud.He could almost picture how happy I'd been w

Inside the exam room, the doctor spread gel over Lena's lower abdomen. The cold made her shiver, and she took the opportunity to grab Quentin's hand.Quentin frowned slightly and instinctively started to pull away, but the doctor spoke before he could."Try not to move. This won't take long."So Quentin left his hand where it was. After a moment, he turned it over and closed his fingers around Lena's.She looked at him, her eyes glowing with happiness. At three months, the baby was still tiny, too early for much to be clearly made out.Lena gave Quentin's hand a little shake. "Quentin, isn't this amazing? I'm really going to be a mom."Quentin looked up at the grainy black-and-white image on the monitor, and for some reason, I came to mind.It wasn't as if he'd never imagined it before. He'd imagined marrying me, building a real family with me, and having a sweet little child of their own.So how had everything ended up like this?He went over everything that had happened lately, again

The call ended, leaving only the steady beep of the disconnected line.A moment later, Lena updated both her social feed and her public account with the same photo.Quentin had one hand resting over her stomach, his eyes full of tenderness. The caption read:"Mom and Dad loved each other very much, and that's how we got you."I sank back onto the bed. Tears slipped down my cheeks and soaked into the sheets.By the time I woke again, it was already noon the next day.The company had called while I was asleep. Lena had shown up at the office, and HR said the situation was causing a scene. They wanted me there immediately to deal with it.My head was still foggy when I got up. I hadn't even changed out of the clothes I'd worn in the rain the night before, but I rushed over anyway. When I arrived, Lena was sitting at my desk with several of my coworkers gathered around her."How far along are you?""I have a cushion you can use. It'll be more comfortable.""You're way too nice. Your best f
