Chapter 2

Author: Rivermore
I put down my fork and headed for the door, but Quentin caught up before I made it out. His hand closed around my wrist hard enough to hurt.

"Lennie just got dumped, Jenna. You're supposed to be her best friend. Instead of trying to make her feel better, you've been sitting there with an attitude all night. What are you trying to pull?"

For a moment, I simply looked at him.

Five years. I'd loved this man willingly for five whole years.

"Quentin," I said quietly. "You really never fail to disappoint me."

His brow furrowed. The sarcasm went right over his head.

Then a startled cry came from the living room.

Three seconds? He didn't even need one. Quentin immediately turned and went straight to Lena.

That was all I needed to see.

I walked out without another word.

A few weeks earlier, corporate had asked if I'd be willing to transfer to the Norvale branch. I'd put off giving them an answer because Quentin hated the idea of us being apart. He'd said long distance wasn't for him. He wanted to come home to me every day.

Funny how little that mattered now.

All I could picture were Lena's pink bunny slippers by our door and the cilantro sitting in the bowl he switched to me.

Maybe I hadn't suddenly been pushed out of my own relationship.

Maybe I'd been on the outside for a long time and had only just noticed.

I'd introduced Quentin and Lena as soon as Quentin and I started dating. Back then, Lena had a boyfriend, and there were still lines she and Quentin knew not to cross.

Things only started changing after Lena's relationship became an endless cycle of breaking up and getting back together.

At first, the changes had been easy to dismiss.

One night, Lena called me drunk and asked me to come get her. Quentin came along, and she ended up throwing up all over his car. He was so disgusted afterward that he sold the thing.

Whenever she fought with her boyfriend and came running to me, Quentin used to complain. He hated that our nights together kept getting interrupted and grumbled that the two of us never had any privacy anymore.

Then, at some point, he stopped complaining.

The smell of alcohol on Lena stopped bothering him too.

Before long, whenever she drank too much, Quentin was the one reaching for her first. He'd steady her, make her something to help her sober up, and patiently rub her back when she felt sick.

Even our trips changed.

Quentin started suggesting we bring Lena along because having her there made it easier to hide our relationship. He called her our cover.

In practice, the two of them walked ahead together while I followed behind carrying Lena's purse and coat.

Once, Lena complained that Quentin always made her look bad in photos, so she spent ages showing him exactly how she wanted them taken.

Their heads rested together as the breeze lifted a few strands of Lena's hair and swept them lightly across Quentin's cheek. The corner of his mouth curved up in a smile so faint it was almost impossible to catch.

I remembered looking at the two of them and suddenly wondering what I was even doing there.

So I walked over, handed back Lena's purse and coat, and returned to the hotel alone.

Quentin and I had a massive fight that night.

He accused me of reading too much into everything. According to him, there was nothing remotely inappropriate between him and Lena. She was only there because having her around made it easier for us to keep our relationship secret.

By then I was crying so hard I could barely get the words out.

"Then stop keeping me a secret! It's been five years, Quentin. Five years of hiding me. I don't understand why you keep doing this. Can't you see what it's doing to me?"

He'd gone quiet.

After a long time, he came over and wrapped his arms around me.

"Okay," he said. "We'll go public."

And today was supposed to be that day.

Instead, on the same day Lena's breakup finally became permanent, Quentin logged into my account, deleted the video I'd stayed up all night making, and wiped out whatever was left between us along with it.

I brushed the tears from my face and called corporate.

"I've decided. I'll take the transfer to Norvale."

It was already dark when I got home.

The kitchen had gone cold. Grease had hardened in the skillet, and Quentin and Lena were nowhere to be seen.

I sank onto the couch and opened my social media account, intending to change the password before Quentin could get into it again.

But I never made it that far.

The first post on my feed was one Quentin and Lena had uploaded together.

It was nothing more than a single collage.

In the top photo, Lena was nestled against Quentin's chest.

Beneath it was a prenatal ultrasound.

And playing over the post was "Primrose in My Lover's Arms," one of the songs that had been everywhere lately.

The same song I'd chosen for the five-minute video I'd made for Quentin.

My hand tightened around my phone.

Suddenly, I couldn't seem to swallow.

A tear landed on the screen just as Quentin's name lit it up.

I answered.

"Jen, you saw it, didn't you? I can explain. It's because..."

"You don't need to."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

"You don't ever need to explain anything to me again."

I closed my eyes.

"We're done, Quentin."

Then I hung up and booked the flight to Norvale.

Quentin hurried toward us beneath a black umbrella and stopped directly in our path. His gaze moved from me to the man beside me, and his grip tightened around the handle."Jen," he asked tensely, "who is he?"I looked at him without a trace of emotion."How is that any of your business?"Then I added, "Quentin, do you really think standing out here every day is going to change anything? We're adults. Stop acting so childishly."They were the exact words he'd once said to me.Now I was giving them back to him.His shoulders trembled as he stared at me, unwilling to accept what he was hearing."Jenna, are you really going to give up on me? On everything we've had all these years?"His voice had gone hoarse, the plea in it almost humiliatingly desperate."I went public with the truth. I let the entire internet tear me apart, and I took all the blame. I admitted everything."His voice cracked."All I'm asking is for you to give us one more chance. Forgive me this once. Please...""Quentin

Lena froze. Panic flashed through her eyes, and almost immediately, she tried the same trick she'd used before. Her expression crumpled into one of hurt innocence, and she started to sway backward as if she were about to fall and make it look like I'd pushed her.She barely had time to move before one of my coworkers stepped forward with her phone already recording, holding the camera right in Lena's face."I got the whole thing on video. Jenna didn't even touch you. You were about to throw yourself backward all on your own. What is this, some cheap little skit? At least make it believable."That was all it took. The others immediately joined in, and this time, no one held back."No wonder the story online never quite added up. So this is how you did it? Play the victim, pull little stunts like this, and get everyone to feel sorry for you while you twist the truth?""You spent all that time telling everyone Jenna was the one with a character problem, but from where I'm standing, you're

I'd been in Norvale for a full month before I finally started feeling like I could breathe again. At first, I couldn't get used to the weather. It seemed to rain endlessly, never hard enough to be dramatic, just a constant fine drizzle that hung in the air day after day. The damp gray skies and steady patter against the windows made everything feel heavier somehow. Then, on a rare day off, I slept until I woke naturally.Rain was tapping softly against the glass when I opened my eyes. There was no noise, no chaos, nothing that demanded my attention.I lay there for a while, looking out at the city through the misty rain, and for the first time since I'd arrived, the unfamiliar place didn't feel quite so strange. Instead, it felt peaceful.I'd used my old résumé to find a decent job. By then, the scandal online had already blown over, and no one here knew anything about what had happened to me.I had been nervous when I first started. Every time someone looked at me for a second too lon

Lena jumped and turned around, looking hurt."Why are you yelling at me? I was only trying to help."Quentin took a few steps forward and blocked her path."Don't bother. I'm not staying here much longer anyway."He looked at her steadily."Once I've explained everything to Jen and she's had time to cool off, I'm moving back home."What Quentin didn't know was that because of him, our home no longer existed.By then, the apartment had already been emptied. Everything was gone, and it felt as though our five years together had been cleared away along with it.Lena turned her back to him, and where he couldn't see, resentment flashed across her face.Later, Quentin sat on the edge of the bed, replaying the video I'd made for him over and over.He had actually saved a copy before deleting it from my account. One memory after another passed across the screen to the sweet music I'd chosen, and before he realized it, Quentin was laughing out loud.He could almost picture how happy I'd been w

Inside the exam room, the doctor spread gel over Lena's lower abdomen. The cold made her shiver, and she took the opportunity to grab Quentin's hand.Quentin frowned slightly and instinctively started to pull away, but the doctor spoke before he could."Try not to move. This won't take long."So Quentin left his hand where it was. After a moment, he turned it over and closed his fingers around Lena's.She looked at him, her eyes glowing with happiness. At three months, the baby was still tiny, too early for much to be clearly made out.Lena gave Quentin's hand a little shake. "Quentin, isn't this amazing? I'm really going to be a mom."Quentin looked up at the grainy black-and-white image on the monitor, and for some reason, I came to mind.It wasn't as if he'd never imagined it before. He'd imagined marrying me, building a real family with me, and having a sweet little child of their own.So how had everything ended up like this?He went over everything that had happened lately, again

The call ended, leaving only the steady beep of the disconnected line.A moment later, Lena updated both her social feed and her public account with the same photo.Quentin had one hand resting over her stomach, his eyes full of tenderness. The caption read:"Mom and Dad loved each other very much, and that's how we got you."I sank back onto the bed. Tears slipped down my cheeks and soaked into the sheets.By the time I woke again, it was already noon the next day.The company had called while I was asleep. Lena had shown up at the office, and HR said the situation was causing a scene. They wanted me there immediately to deal with it.My head was still foggy when I got up. I hadn't even changed out of the clothes I'd worn in the rain the night before, but I rushed over anyway. When I arrived, Lena was sitting at my desk with several of my coworkers gathered around her."How far along are you?""I have a cushion you can use. It'll be more comfortable.""You're way too nice. Your best f
