Annora:

The lantern send-off was the most entrancing experience I had ever been a part of.

The sky was lit up with a thousand rays of light, all spread out, reaching for the hearts of loved ones.

It started with those who had lost someone in the vampire attack. The affected pulled their wings and flew into the sky to release their lanterns, allowing their send-off to be reached more quickly.

Those who had lost someone at any point in time were able to go next, while everyone else was able to release their lanterns last, sending out strength and empathy to fill in all the cracks that our grief leaves behind.

I didn't have grief. To lose a parent before you ever knew them was a different type of sadness, so I sent my strength and empathy, casting out my hopes for our community to heal from this tragedy.

The ride back to the castle was quiet. Once again, I was trapped in the back of the vehicle with four males, except this time, they were also reserved.

Otto and I shared a few knowing gl

Jacob:Neither of them is moving, speaking, or possibly breathing, and I can't blame either of them for the shock of the situation.Nora slowly lifts her hand to the glass, still separating the two of them, and places it flat against it. Chia's gaze moves from Nora's hand to me, making eye contact with me for the first time. This wasn't supposed to be what we found. Chia had died, or so we had thought. There are some holes in the information that we had received.Coming inside this building was a terrible idea, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't give me information that I needed—that we needed."Are you okay?" Nora finally speaks, drawing Chia's attention back to her.Surely, she can speak right? But she isn't making the effort. She looks different. She's now pale like Nora. Her eyes have changed, and she looks numb inside. If emptiness had a physical appearance, it would be Chia."Nora, we need to go," I whisper.I turn back to look down the hallway, everyone is still retreated ba

Jacob:This wasn't going to end well."Nora!" I hiss, pulling her arm back."What? I'm going to be Queen soon, whatever this is," she waves around our surroundings. "It's my business to know."Stubborn didn't touch the surface for this woman. When she sets her mind to something, not much else matters. I looked around, but there were still no sounds, not even rustling from any forest animals, which I'm starting to find very odd. Knowing the nature of this place, it did make a little bit of sense."Nora, we don't know what's in there. It could be dangerous," I comment.I have to admit, I'm a little bit scared. That's saying something, as I don't scare easily."What aren't you telling me?" she asks.I step back, observing her stance. Her hands are folded over her chest, and she raises an eyebrow as if she somehow knows I already know more than I've said. That wouldn't be possible, right? Now I'm getting paranoid. I'm not from her region; she shouldn't have a strong enough connection t

Jacob:"What did Noah do to you?" I ask, as she directs me where to go.She gets quiet, and even her breathing isn't noticeable. So much so that I peek down at her to make sure she is alive or not sleeping. She's small. It's almost like carrying a child, as she weighs very little in comparison to a grown man. It makes me think back to her knocking Genevieve out in the courtyard.I felt proud of her. All these years, I've watched her let people walk on her, but now, as I think about it, it dawns on me.It bothered her more when someone had pushed me around; it had nothing to do with her."He didn't do anything, Jacob. Emilio... he's an empath. He was trying to help me. I have been having anxiety but... he accidentally pulled out other emotions I was feeling and pushed them back into me like a wrecking ball. I'm so embarrassed," she whimpers, pushing her face into my chest.I stop mid-air, holding us in place. I grab her chin, forcing her to face my gaze, but she's stubborn, so she looks

Noah:Something more was going on with Annora and Darin. I couldn't quite put a finger on it, but after what happened with Emilio and her, I had a feeling I had a good idea of what that was.I couldn't be sure, and I'm not saying it really matters, but I was curious. The curiosity was natural since I was considering marrying this woman.Darin looks oddly familiar in a way that makes my stomach turn. I would have to go back to my region to look through our documents and registries to see if anything clicked or if I could find out more information, but I needed to get through today's core challenge first. Not to mention, make sure Nora makes it out of school alive and not mauled by Emilio.I heard he was an empath. There are always rumors about what gifts each region has, especially the leaders and inner circles of the region councils. We all have special gifts, gifts that are meant to help keep our people safe and provide us with extra strength when needed. After today, I know for sure

Annora:My world felt like it was crumbling. Nothing made sense anymore, and I felt like no one was there. The ones who were there were unwilling to give me honest answers, if any answers were given at all.Except Juno. She knew I would be back, and now I know exactly why.The warm air wafts gently around my form, cutting through my hair as the breeze sets in around us. The others turn and walk forward as I gesture for them to give me a few more moments with Jacob."Has your father said anything about Chia?" Jacob murmurs. The walkway suddenly feels smaller, the cement slowly caving in towards us. Anxiety. I take a deep breath and look up at Jacob. His eyes look tired with concern.Did he really think I was going to share any information with him when he couldn't seem to answer any of my questions? The audacity. While Jacob refuses to give me the information that my heart desires, I have to be honest with myself and say that he has, at the very least, been good to me. His features ar

Annora:"A Nora special," Sebastian smiles, handing me the delicious iced coffee that only Winnona could have served up.Sebastian arrives at the front of the castle, alongside El, who has already downed half of her coffee and looks just as tired as I do.The foyer was bustling with people getting their days started, and as much as I had hoped my father would be here, he was nowhere to be found.Gerrard arrives shortly after, Emilio and Noah in tow, as he approaches us."The King has advised me that you will be escorted to each class by your bachelors for the time being. You're not to leave the school grounds without them and are to be home immediately after school," Gerrard says. There's a ping of guilt in his tone. He didn't like relaying orders to me from my father, but we were both fairly used to it by now.I was surprised that my father allowed me to attend classes at all. Even as an adult, sometimes I felt more like a child because I always had to obey his orders. The school was
