I blew out the breath and relaxed again. It was probably one of the wild animals looking for food. Turning onto my side, I reached for Vanya and pulled her against my chest. She muttered something, but didn’t wake up.
I stared at her face that was only a few inches from mine. Her long lashes brushed against her cheekbones, and her lips were swollen and slightly parted. Her nose twitched, making me smile.
I never thought that it would be possible to find someone for all three of us. The first time I looked into her eyes, I knew that she belonged to us, but my smile faded as my mind trailed off to what Obsidian had said.
Vanya moved again, throwing a leg over my hip and snuggling closer to my chest. I chuckled. She liked cuddling and I fucking loved it.
My eyes darted over to the window and my body tensed as I heard it again; a twig snapping followed by another sound, one that instantly had me on alert.
I carefully untangled myself from Vanya’s hold and got up. Walking over to the window, I made sure to stay in the shadows as I looked outside.
Nothing looked out of place.
But something was wrong. That sound wasn’t usual.
With one last glance at the bed to make sure that Vanya was still asleep, I walked out of the bedroom and made my way down the stairs.
I used the secret exit Obsidian had insisted on to slip outside.
It was deadly silent. I noticed the fact that none of the usual sounds of nature surrounded us. No crickets chirping or animals searching around the bushes for food.
Just dead silence.
Had the killer decided to come for Vanya?
With a flash of fear, I allowed the shift to take place.
It was easier to move about in animal form. I could be stealthier without making a sound, and hopefully catch the son of a bitch who wanted to hurt our Vanya.
I stepped around the corner of the cabin and froze.
Someone stood a few feet from the front door, staring down at something. Judging by the size and height, it had to be a male.
I carefully stalked closer.
Whatever was at his feet held his attention.
When I stepped out from the bushes, I realized what it was. The smell of death surrounded the man, but it didn’t cling to him.
My lips curled up in a silent growl.
A light suddenly flicked on inside the cabin, startling him. He straightened and turned, spotting me.
Horror flashed across his face.
And then he did the stupidest thing someone could do in a situation with a wild animal.
He ran.
And the animal I was, I went in for the chase.

“If you kill him, we won’t get any answers.”
I dug my claws deeper into the man’s shoulders before I raised my head to hiss at him.
Orion stepped into view with his hands up. “Don’t attack me. I’m just pointing things out to you.”
With a low growl, I turned my attention back to the man. I had leaped onto his back as he was running. His blood was already seeping into the ground. I might have ripped some of his skin off in the process of tackling him.
“I know you want to kill him, but let Dorian and I question him first.”
No!
He was mine. He came to hurt my Vanya.
I climbed off his back and used my snout and head to roll him to study him. He wore gloves similar to what the doctors at the facility wore when they took blood samples from us.
I took a step closer and froze when a piercing scream shot through the air.
Vanya!

Obsidian reached her before I did.
Vanya’s scream wasn’t because she was in danger; it was because she had found the body. She was kneeling next to it, with her hands hovering over it, but not touching.
Obsidian was crouched behind her, seemingly unsure of what to do, but when Vanya moved, so did he.
Another scream tore from her throat when he jerked her away from the body. She thrashed in his arms when he picked her up and held her against his chest.
I moved closer. Why is she reacting that way?
I had no idea what to do. A body had been dumped outside our home—a home nobody but the pride knew about. How did the man know where we were?
Obsidian grunted, snapping my attention toward them.
Vanya had elbowed him in the ribs.
He hissed at her and let her go. I winced when Vanya hit the ground. She instantly scrambled towards the body again, but before she could touch it, Obsidian grabbed her again.
“No!”
“Stop screaming,” Obsidian growled.
He spun around and stormed into the house. After a moment’s hesitation, I followed him. Vanya was no longer screaming. Obsidian had placed her on the couch where she sat staring unseeingly into the distance as tears rolled down her cheeks.
I shifted back to my human form and moved towards her. “Vanya.”
Crouching in front of her, I reached out and placed my hand on top of hers. Tear-filled eyes shot up to mine. The pain I saw knocked the air from my lungs.
“Rosebud,” I whispered. “Do you know who it is?”
Vanya let out a sob and threw herself at me. The action was so unexpected that I lost my balance and fell back onto my ass.
My eyes shot over to Obsidian when he moved.
He stared down at Vanya for a few seconds before looking at me. Obsidian ran a hand through his hair and shook his head.
“It’s her friend,” he muttered. “Her name’s Charlene.”
He is defenceless. I could easily hurt him. To be honest, I had considered it, but then Devrim’s words flashed through my mind and pulled me out of my disturbing thoughts.Devrim had been right. But it didn’t make me fear Obsidian less.I sat in the chair a few feet from the bed, staring at the door as I waited for Devrim to return. Every passing second that he was away made my mind race with things that could go wrong.Darkness was creeping in on me, and I had no idea how to handle it.A whimper from the bed made my eyes snap over to it.Obsidian was on his stomach, clutching the pillow beneath his head as his big body trembled. The whimpers changed into growls that made my skin break out in goosebumps. The room suddenly fell silent again, but it didn’t last long.Rolling onto his back, Obsidian clutched at the sheets as his whimpers started up again. It got louder and louder.Tears filled my eyes.It sounded like he was in pain. What am I supposed to do? My eyes darted over to the
I think I’m going to pass out. After everything that had happened, I never thought that I would be returning to the cabin. My steps faltered when we reached the front door. Oblivious to my hesitation, Devrim opened the door and entered. As he turned to close it, his eyes locked on me. “Vanya?”When he told me that Obsidian was sick, the concern I felt had me agreeing to go with him, but standing outside the house made me second guess myself.I was about to face the man who had attacked me, the man who haunted my dreams, and not in a good way.Swallowing, I took a step forward, but my muscles tensed, preventing me from moving.“What’s wrong?” Devrim asked as he walked over to me. “You’ve gone pale.”“I…” My words trailed off when movement behind him caught my attention. My knees weakened when a wave of fear hit me. I wasn’t ready to see him yet!Panic hit next.If Devrim hadn’t grabbed hold of my arms, I would have run away.“Rosebud—”“I don’t want to see him,” I blurted.“Please, Va
What are monsters? The imaginary creatures we were sure hid under our beds? Were they the creatures that the authors and filmmakers created? Maybe the stories told to scare us were monsters in their own way? Or maybe the adults who told us those stories were the real monsters?A monster was cruel and evil.A monster was someone who found joy in hurting others. Like those men who hid in the shadows, waiting for a woman or man to come along. A monster was someone who killed without a second thought.I sniffed and reached up to wipe the tears from my cheeks. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t pull my eyes away from the group of kids in the alley below me. I had spotted them the moment they entered. One of them had pulled out a knife and was busy dissecting a dead animal. Are they monsters? The moment the kid had pulled out the knife, I had thought of Obsidian, and then my mind had trailed to Devrim and Ezra.I hadn’t seen them in weeks. As soon as the doctor had given me a clean bil
“Get the fuck out!” Ezra sneered.I ignored him and made my way over to the bed, but he stepped in front of me and flashed his teeth. I growled at him, but he didn’t even flinch. My eyes narrowed and my fists clenched at my sides.“You’re not allowed in here,” he hissed.“I’m here to talk to Vanya,” I told him.He growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes shot over his shoulder to her. Her head was bent, her hands clutching at the sheet. I sucked in a deep breath and closed my eyes. The sweet smell of her fear filled the room. She’s scared of me. “Vanya?”Her body jerked as if I’d struck her. Slowly, she raised her head, but she couldn’t look me in the eyes. Her eyes briefly glanced in my direction, then instantly lowered again. What little colour she had in her cheeks when I arrived was now gone.“Get out,” Ezra growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes snap back to his. “I’m talking to her and not to you.”“She doesn’t want to fucking talk to you! What made you
There was no annoying beeping filling my ears. No machines attached to every possible inch of my body. Everything was silent which made me feel like I was alone, but I knew I wasn’t, because I could feel the comforting weight of another hand on mine.I wasn’t dead.I wasn’t alone. But I was in pain. The constant throbbing of my shoulder and the feeling of fire ants crawling all over my body was pulling me from my sleep.I didn’t want to wake up, because in my dreams, everything was okay. In my dreams, Obsidian was smiling at me, and Ezra had accepted the fact that Obsidian and Devrim loved each other. In my dreams, everything was perfect. But dreams only lasted so long before reality started creeping in and everything crumbled and the real world showed its ugly face.A soft sigh reached my ears, followed by the sound of a chair creaking. The weight on my hand disappeared, making emptiness fill me.I had fucked up and now I was all alone.“I know you’re awake, sugarplum.”I hesitated
It was all part of his plan.If Vanya died, I would be blamed for it. They’d kill me and every other pride member on the island. The humans would be turned against us by Reeves, because he was powerful enough to accomplish that.I knew he had been watching us. I knew he had seen me attacking Vanya.Small cameras had been set up in the corners. The entrance and exit had also been revealed numerous times when he entered and left. The gas he had used to knock me out in order to move me was something they had used in the facility. What was really worrying was the fact that he somehow got hold of the gas in the first place and that he knew so much about me.My eyes darted to one of the small vents I had seen hidden slightly from the human eye. It was how he was planning on knocking me out again.I was just waiting for the right time to strike. I paced back and forth next to Vanya’s unconscious body. Stopping, I licked at the deep wounds on her upper arms. A shudder raced through my body an
