LOGINMy body was stiff, and the slightest movement made pain shoot through me. It took me a while to get my hazy mind working; after some of the fog faded, the memories came rushing back.
I had almost died.
Opening my eyes, I winced at the sudden bright light that made little lightning bolts shoot through my skull. I blinked rapidly, and once my eyes had adjusted, I glanced around the small hospital room.
My eyes darted over my body and lingered on the needle tapped to the back of my hand. The memory of touching the knife flashed through my mind.
I gripped the sheet and threw it aside before pulling the hospital gown up to get a look at my stomach. A square bandage covered the wound a few inches above my hip-bone. I hesitated for a few seconds and then gripped the edge to peel it back.
Nausea made my stomach turn as I stared at the stitches. I quickly moved the bandage back in place and swallowed.
The door suddenly opened, making me scramble to push the gown back down, but it only resulted in pain shooting through me. With a gasp, I dropped back against the pillows and squeezed my eyes closed.
I felt the gown being pulled down and then the sheets up to cover me again. When the pain had somewhat faded, I opened my eyes and blinked up at the man hovering next to the bed.
My eyes instantly dropped and colour flooded my cheeks. I had been staring at him last night from a distance, but I’ve never been so close to him.
“Vanya,” he said softly. “How are you doing?”
“H-hi,” I croaked. “I’m fine, thank you. Were y-you the one who r-rescued me?”
He shook his head and took a few steps back. “Ezra heard you screaming.”
Ezra. Was Ezra the one who always attended the events with him? “Can you thank him for me, please?”
His smile widened. “You can thank him yourself when he comes to visit you.”
“H-he’s here?”
“Yes. I spotted him when I was on my way up here.”
My eyes darted over him as he moved around the room. He was taller up close and a lot more muscular than I assumed. Being so close to him, I could make out the exact colour of his eyes. I always thought that they were a dark brown, but they were the most amazing colour I’ve ever seen and so inhuman-like. The different shades of blue blended so well together, but it made it harder to figure out exactly what colour his eyes were.
“Do you mind if I ask you a few questions, Vanya?” he questioned.
I nodded. The man sure didn’t beat around the bush. He didn’t start questioning me right away, though. Grabbing one of the chairs that stood against the wall, he dragged it over to the side of the bed and took a seat.
His bluish eyes locked with mine for a few seconds before darting over my face.
Is it my imagination, or are his eyes lingering on my lips?
I licked them and winced. I had completely forgotten about my split lip.
“What exactly happened last night?”
I swallowed and turned my head to stare at the door across from the bed. “I went out for some . . . fresh air.” No way was I telling him that my underwear was giving me wedgies. “I heard a sound and when I turned around, the man was there behind me. He grabbed me before I could run and dragged me further into the darkness.”
“You tried to fight him?”
“Not until he started touching me.” My eyes dropped to my lap. “I saw the knife. When he grabbed me, he pressed it to my neck and it made me freeze.”
“Did he—” he stopped and cleared his throat. “You said he touched you. Did he rape you?”
“No.” My eyes darted up to his, but quickly lowered again. “He started groping me and that’s when I started fighting.”
“You didn’t see his face?”
“No, I’m sorry.”
“You have nothing to apologize for,” he said softly. “I’m glad that you are okay.”
The chair creaked when he moved, but he didn’t get up. He only leaned forward and stared down at the floor with a frown. It didn’t look like he was in any hurry to leave; and somehow, I liked it.
My head snapped up when the door opened and my eyes widened.
“You’re awake,” Ezra exclaimed with a big smile. “Thought I might get you something to cheer you up.”
He walked over to the bed and placed a plastic bag on my lap before stepping back. Biting back a smile, I opened it and stared at the contents. He had gotten me two chocolate bars and a packet of jelly beans.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, sugarplum.”
“Sugarplum?”
“Is there something wrong with me calling her that, Devrim?”
My eyes shot over to the man in question who was watching us with interest.
“No, there’s nothing wrong with it.” Devrim’s eyes darted between us. “I just don’t see her as a sugarplum.”
“Then what do you see her as?”
I held my breath as I waited for him to answer. Devrim shifted in the chair, but he kept his eyes locked on me. His lips slowly tilted up into a smile. I waited and waited for him to answer, but he never did.
He stood when his phone started ringing. One glance at the screen had the smile slipping from his lips, and his eyes narrowing. Muttering something under his breath, he swiped his thumb across the screen and pressed the phone against his ear.
“What did he do?”
I looked at Ezra when he moved. He was watching Devrim with worried eyes. My eyes dropped to his mouth when he started nibbling his bottom lip.
His teeth were all white and straight, there was no sign of any sharp teeth like I always imagined.
Another memory hit, making me shiver. One where he had his body—well, animal body—pressed against mine, chest to chest, with his body vibrating as he purred.
“You can purr.” I snapped my mouth shut as soon as the words fell from my lips.
Ezra smiled at me. “I can do a lot of things.”
“Like what?” I questioned before I could stop myself.
His eyes were a shade darker than Devrim’s, but they were similar in height, although Ezra was a little less muscular and his hair a bit shorter.
“Is he your brother?” I asked.
“Who? Devrim?” I nodded. “No, we’re not related.”
“You seem close.”
His smile slipped slightly. “We are. When you go through what we’ve been through—” he broke off. “I’d die for him and I know he’d do the same for me.”
I didn’t know what to say to him, so I only gave him a small smile and looked away. I had two hybrids in my hospital room, and one of them stood within touching distance.
Why am I not scared or freaking out like most people usually do when they are so close?
Maybe it had something to do with one of them having saved me.
“Ezra?” His eyes were already on me when I looked at him. “Thank you for saving me.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t get there sooner.”
I swallowed when he moved closer and reached out. I almost had a heart attack when he gently cupped my cheek and swiped a thumb over my injured lip.
“I should’ve killed him,” he muttered to himself.
I leaned into his touch, unable to help myself. “I’m glad you didn’t. They would’ve locked you up.”
Ezra dropped his hand and stepped away just as Devrim turned back towards us. His eyes locked on Ezra.
“We need to go.”

“Girl!” Charlene exclaimed, drawing out the ‘l’ as she stormed into the hospital room.
I gave her a small smile, but it quickly faded. Smiling was the last thing I wanted to do.
The hybrids left before I could ask them all the questions some of us were too scared to ask. Once they left, the room felt so damn empty that I almost started sobbing.
Neither my father nor Joy, or anybody else, had come to visit me, which wasn’t really something out of the ordinary. I knew better than to expect my father to drop everything and visit me in the hospital.
“Are you dying?”
“Not yet,” I told her. “Aren’t you supposed to be at work?”
She rolled her eyes as she took a seat on the bed near my feet. “I’m on my lunch break. I would’ve come to visit you tonight so I could stay longer, but then I saw this.”
I stared down at the folded newspaper she held out towards me before looking up at her with a raised eyebrow. When I didn’t take it from her, she sighed and unfolded it and then dropped it onto my lap.
“Your name is on everybody’s lips.”
“Are you serious?”
I stared down at the newspaper in dismay. I hated being thrown into the spotlight. Everybody knew my father which meant that I couldn’t do anything without word getting back to him—like that one time when I got caught in Bobby’s truck after prom.
The headline on the front page read:
MAYOR REEVES’S DAUGHTER RESCUED BY HYBRID
Beneath it was a photo of Ezra holding me against his chest. I was unconscious, with the knife sticking out of my hip, and my dress soaked in blood.
“I heard he was completely naked,” Charlene muttered. “Apparently the man’s hung…”—she made a crude gesture—“if you know what I mean.”
My eyes widened. “You can’t be serious!”
“I kid you not,” she said. “I heard it from Joy herself.” Charlene pulled a face. “Well, not from her directly, but I heard her talking to her friends. The man was completely naked when he carried you into the room.”
I stared at the photo. What she was saying could be true based on the photo. His torso was bare, but that was about it. Whoever took the photo didn’t include the lower half of his body.
“He was in . . . animal form when he attacked the man,” I said hesitantly.
She gasped and leaned forward. “You saw him in animal form?”
“Not r-really.” I placed the newspaper aside. “It was too dark to see anything, but I heard him.”
“Tell me everything.”
I told her most of what happened, but kept out the parts where he had purred, called me Sugarplum, and brought me candy to cheer me up.
“I can’t believe you met them.”
“Neither can I.”
Charlene stayed for a few more minutes and filled me in on all the town gossip before she left. When the door closed behind her, I picked up the newspaper again and stared down at the photo.
Photos never did them any justice.
Blowing out a breath, I folded the paper and placed it on the bedside table.
What else is being said about me? What is my father making out of all this? What do they say about the man who rescued me?
“Hey, mama.”My eyes snapped up and my lips curled into a smile. I had no idea where he learned that, but I wasn’t going to lie and say that I hated it when he called me that.Dev hovered in the doorway of the kitchen, eyes locked on me. “How are you feeling?”“A little achy,” I told him honestly. He straightened and hurried over to me. Dropping to his knees by my legs, he reached out and placed his hand on my stomach. In return, one of the babies decided to kick. Chuckling, he pushed the shirt up to expose my large stomach. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to the spot. A low purr filled the air, instantly relaxing my muscles. Cupping my stomach with both hands, he pressed another kiss to my skin and then slowly raised his head to look at me. “We have a surprise for you.”“A surprise?” I blinked at him. “Where are your shoes?”I nodded towards the living room. “Come on.”Standing, he gripped my hands to help me up and led me towards the living room. Dropping to his knees
I hovered in the darkest corner of the room as I stared at them. It was nearing midnight. I had hoped to make it home in time for dinner, but unfortunately I didn’t make it.Vanya was almost halfway through her pregnancy and the house wasn’t finished yet.The foundation had been laid and the walls were up. When I left they had been busy installing the floors.I needed everything to be perfect. It was our new start. The last thing I wanted was for something to upset my mates. Or for Vanya to start stressing. It wouldn’t be good for the babies. A tired sigh fell from my lips, I pulled my shirt over my head and entered the bathroom. I hesitated a moment before gently closing the door behind me.After opening the shower tap, I walked over to the cabinet and removed the knives.Once undressed, I stepped into the shower. My eyes fluttered closed as I tilted my head back under the water. Another sigh fell from my lips.I was tired. But I had a few more things to do before I could crawl int
“Vanya could do with some new clothes.”Obsidian glanced at me. “She doesn’t need it,” he muttered.I frowned at him. “Her clothes don't fit her anymore.”“She wears our clothes.”I loved it when she stole our clothes to wear, but I didn’t like it when she went out in public without wearing a bra and underwear.“Betsy mentioned she would need maternity wear soon.” My frown deepened. “I think that’s what she calls it.”Obsidian sighed. “She won’t need it.”I stopped and turned to look at him. He took a few more steps forward before he realized I wasn’t next to him anymore.“Obsidian-”“I lied when I told Vanya that the pregnancy would be nine months. The pregnancy isn’t the same as a human pregnancy. It doesn’t matter if the baby is human or like us,” he said softly. “Vanya will reach full term in five months.”I blinked at him.“If my calculations are correct she’s about four, maybe five weeks pregnant.”I took a step closer and gripped the front of his shirt. “You didn’t think it was
I jerked away with a gasp and stared down at his hand between my legs. “You ripped my pants!”Ezra smirked. “You can change into another pair at your apartment.” Whatever I had been about to say was forgotten when his fingers brushed along my slit.He groaned. “You’re not wearing any underwear.”The colour in my cheeks deepened. “I don’t have a lot that fits me anymore,” I admitted. “Besides, it’s more comfortable to go without.”I felt the sharp tip of a claw brushing against my skin and tensed. “You better not cut me,” I told him. His smirk slipped away and a seriousness that surprised me filled his eyes. “I would never hurt you, Vanya.” My eyes darted over his face. The words hung between us, but we both knew he was referring to Obsidian. Reaching up, I cupped his cheeks and gave him a small smile as I fought the tears threatening to fall. “I know,” I whispered. Ezra leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to the corner of my lips. “I ruined things, didn’t I?” I shook my hea
“Ezra.”I frowned, trying my best to ignore him, but a painful jab in my ribs made my eyes snap open.“We’re leaving.”My frown deepened. “Where are you going?” I asked them. The room was still dark, but both of them were already dressed. Vanya was fast asleep next to me. “We talked about it yesterday.” He glared at me. “Were you even listening?”I nodded and carefully turned on my back. Of course, I remembered. Vanya nearly had a panic attack when Devrim told her they would be going to the mainland for some supplies. It had been a few days since we bonded. We had spent almost every night strengthening our bonds. “Make sure she eats something,” Devrim muttered as he leaned over me to kiss Vanya’s forehead. “Do you need anything?”I blinked at Obsidian. “I’m dreaming.”His eyes narrowed. “I’m only asking because Vanya made me.”“Some art supplies,” I told him. “Vanya asked me to paint the nursery walls.”Devrim muttered a curse under his breath. “She mentioned it. I forgot. You jus
Devrim and Obsidian had talked about things in detail. Obsidian was doing it to make up for the way he had behaved. He figured it would make Vanya feel better. His bond to Devrim had to be kept open so Devrim would know when Obsidian started panicking. He would step in to take Obsidian away so he could calm down, and then it would be my turn to pacify Vanya. It was a good idea, but it wasn’t going according to plan.Vanya didn’t touch him, she pressed a kiss to his chest and settled down with her face pressed to the crook of his neck.Obsidian frowned, but he wrapped his arms around her waist and held her.A soft sigh fell from Vanya’s lips.I settled more comfortably in the chair and rested the book on my knee. I gripped my pencil and started sketching. It was going to be a gift for Vanya. I was planning on drawing her touching him, but I supposed him holding her would mean the same to her.I was so caught up in drawing that I didn’t realize things had escalated until Vanya’s low moa
Mornings were still my favourite.I loved waking up between my mates, especially with Obsidian between my legs and his head resting on my stomach. He had pushed the shirt up to under my breasts. If I closed my eyes, it was easy to imagine he knew about the baby and it was his way of showing accepta
“I didn’t know you were part panther.”I turned my head to look at Vanya. “Didn’t you? You humans like to pry.”Vanya glanced at me, but immediately focused her attention back on the road. “True, but we’ve only ever been told that your DNA is mixed with big cat DNA.”“As it should be,” I told her.
“This is a bad idea.”I rolled my eyes at him as I continued to make my way down the hall towards Vanya’s bedroom. Obsidian followed closely behind me. I sometimes wished that I had his ability to move so silently, but then again, there were a lot of things Obsidian could do that I wished I could t
“Vanya?”My legs felt like jelly. Any minute now, they were going to give way beneath me and I’d hit the floor. I stepped around the last shelf after blowing out a breath and came to a sudden stop when I spotted the man lingering near my desk.“Bobby?”He spun around with a gasp. “V-Vanya, you scar
