On the day of our wedding, Maverick Lowe sacrificed me as bait to save his childhood sweetheart, Janet Stewart, from her kidnappers. I was left behind, brutally tormented by the gang. The next day, the entire internet was flooded with indecent videos of me. Maverick publicly branded me a disgrace, broke off our engagement in front of everyone, and soon after, paraded Janet as his bride. While I was drowning in despair, my childhood friend Alfred Hawkins confessed his love. He said he had always cared for me, and vowed to shelter me from every storm. With him by my side, I slowly climbed out of that darkness. We married, and soon after welcomed our daughter, Ruby. The three of us built a life of simple, perfect happiness. Until one day, I stumbled upon Janet sobbing in Alfred's arms. Between tears, she choked out, ''The doctor said… without a matching heart, Yoana won't last another month…'' Yoana, her little girl, had been born with a congenital heart defect. Alfred's hand lingered tenderly on her shoulder as he whispered. ''Don't cry. I told you, Ruby's heart was always meant for Yoana. ''After her birthday, I'll arrange the accident. Then Ruby will be delivered straight to the hospital…''

Promises in the Grave Chapter 10
Just like that, two years passed by.With Maverick's dad, Patrick Lowe, and John on my side, I vanished off the radar.Alfred and Maverick never caught up to me, and I reinvented myself, rising to fame as the hottest new comic book artist.I was not just killing it in my career. I had a rock-solid protector too.He was Chester Smith, the head of my comic publishing company. For the last two years, he had been the kindest soul, always putting Ruby and I above everything else.Night after night, as I raced against the clock to finish my art, and through every sick day that Ruby or I endured, he was our rock. His warmth and charisma won us over, heart and soul. Then, Ruby even started calling him 'Dad'.The day Ruby was set to start school came quickly.Chester was up at the crack of dawn, waiting by the front door, all set to take Ruby and I to her first day at kindergarten. However, what he did not expect was Alfred's punch.By the time I dashed outside with Ruby in my arms,

I could not help but crack a smile. Who was he trying to impress with all that emotion? When he moved to hug me, I shoved him back, my voice icy, "Maverick, back off."Maverick gently took my hand, his eyes filled with regret."I'm sorry, Helen. I know choosing to save Janet back then broke your heart. I was fooled by her, you know? She told me it was your people who kidnapped her, and even my mom backed up her story. I believed them..."I've been kicking myself all these years. I never loved Janet. It's always been you, Helen. If Alfred had treated you right, I'd never have the guts to bother you again, but he went and betrayed you!"The one thing I'll always regret is not fighting to keep you with me, letting you end up with Alfred."Helen, I love you. I'll treat Ruby like she's my own, I promise. Just give me one more shot, please don't push me away, okay?"Before I could even respond, someone barreled into Maverick, knocking him down flat.I jumped back, and that was when I

I just shook my head, clueless. She did not push for answers, instead offering a bit of comfort, "You're looking a bit pale. Why don't you go lie down for a bit? I'll take the little one for a bath, get her settled, and before you know it, it's bedtime."I nodded tiredly and watched her carry Ruby upstairs before collapsing onto the couch.I pulled out my phone and scrolled through the latest news. That was when I found out why Ruby's picture was plastered all over the mall. Alfred had gone and bought advertising space on the big screens in malls across the globe. He did all that just to celebrate the birthday of his 'late' daughter. The twisted part was that the Hawkins family had chosen the same day of all days to 'bury' me.There was Alfred, caught on camera, weeping uncontrollably over my coffin.Word on the street was that ever since Ruby and I were gone, he had not even had a drop to drink. The only thing keeping him alive was the nutritional shots John gave him, whether

I was oblivious to the turmoil back home. By then, Ruby and I had made it to Xyland.Sabrina had given me a manor and a whopping 15 million dollars as compensation. The deal was simple. My daughter and I could never set foot in our homeland again.I realized that was the greatest act of love she could offer her granddaughter.Luckily, I had not planned on going back anyway. To me, the years I spent with Alfred were more terrifying than any horror story. It was worse than the times I was put down by other men.I could only get rid of the nightmare by staying as far away from him as possible....The next few days, I kept myself busy with hiring new staff and sprucing up the manor. My life was hectic, but it was meaningful. The one thing that bugged me was Ruby's constant question."Where's Daddy?"She struggled to get her words out right, but somehow, 'daddy' always came out crystal clear.Every time I saw the hope in her eyes for her father, my resentment towards Alfred gre

Alfred caught the slip of his tongue, and his eyes darted to mine, only to be met with a glare so icy it could freeze hell over.He had never seen such a look from me before. He staggered back, stammering, "I... I didn't mean it like that."Janet chimed in, "Yeah, Helen. Alfred didn't mean anythin

When Alfred caught sight of me, I saw a flicker of guilt cross his face. However, Janet let out a tiny sniffle, and Alfred was all concerned, turning to me to say, "You're up, so get a move on and fix up a room for Janet. She'll be staying with us for a bit."Janet shot me a wary glance, her eyes

The sound of the door creaking open froze me in place. I did not turn around, but I felt a hand land swiftly on my waist.Alfred pulled me into his embrace from behind, chuckling, "Honey, I caught a bit of your chat. What's this about not having more kids? I'm ready whenever you are."I turned awa

Everything around me started to whirl and twirl like I was caught in a tornado. The sound in my ears was like thunder on a hot summer day, booming and crashing, scaring me so much I could barely catch my breath.I squinted, trying to see Alfred Hawkins's face through the haze, but it was all a blu
