Chapter 26: Skin of the Soucouyant
Corinna slowly opened her eyes. Her cheek was sticking to a hot surface. It took her a while to realise this hot surface was Hayden’s chest. She blushed deeply as flashes of last night’s escapades rushed back to her. She inhaled his scent, so clean and distinctly masculine. Had the Prince always smelled this good? He had certainly never smelled bad but she had not noticed this. Everything about him made a definite impression on her now that his first shift had passed. She was reluctant to get up but she knew there were still two more weapons to procure. She wondered if Hayden would increase the pace of their travel now that he had ascended to an Alpha position physically. He would not be able to take up the post of Alpha until he returned home to his father’s kingdom of werewolves.
Cory sighed. She carefully tried to extricate herself from his embrace but it was to no avail. Ha
Chapter 27: Mixed-up MushroomsNow that the Prince had inherited his Alpha abilities, their methods of travel would be vastly different.“We’ll leave the horses behind along with all of our supplies. They’ll only slow us down,” announced Hayden.“It was fine when it was the prepubescent Prince slowing us down,” mumbled Leech to Lynx who snickered.Hayden glared at them and then slowly smiled.“Leech and Lynx will stay behind to guard the horses and the supplies,” said Hayden.Leech scowled and Lynx frowned.“We cannot leave our horses unattended with wild beasts about,” said the Prince.“So we’re leaving them with Leech, they’d be better off with the wild beasts!” Said Fracture, his laughter filling the forest.“And Fracture will stay behind to keep an e
Chapter 28: Overgrown and Under siegeZurie was large for such an isolated village. They grew all of their own crops. They made trips to the sea for fish and carted the fish back to village. They also fished in the rivers nearby though this was not encouraged. The rivers were a last resort for when food was scarce so the elders of the village did not want them depleted by overfishing. Cory was amazed at how colourful the village was. Each house was painted a different colour and the villagers were not afraid to choose vibrant shades. She spotted houses painted canary yellow, emerald green, coral pink, azure and even blood-red. It was as if there was an ongoing competition among the villagers with a grand prize for the house with the loudest colour theme. Cory and Sprout loved it. Hayden and Titan were not so impressed. Hayden, Titan, Venom and the twins had all shifted back to their human forms and dressed themselves near the outskirts of the vi
Chapter 29: RooftopsCory watched the sun set from the upstairs window of the village chief’s house. The Chief had several guest bedrooms in his house. Cory and Hayden were given the most spacious one. Blaython was asleep on the fluffy carpet at the foot of the bed. Titan and Sprout shared a room so technically Titan had his own room. Sprout would be sleeping in a shoebox lined with soft baby blanket. The chief had borrowed a pillow from his daughter’s dollhouse to give to Sprout. Sprout refused to actually sleep in the bedroom of the large dollhouse because the porcelain doll, dubbed Marcy, scared the little dweller. The Twins shared another room, and Venom and his mushrooms had their own room.Cory sighed as she watched the sun make its descent, causing a stream of colours to paint themselves across the sky. It was minutes before nightfall.“I feel so sorry for the Chief,” she mumbled, resting her head in
Chapter 30: The Crimson AxeShould we climb down the chimney now? Asked Titan over mind-link.He pondered the Beta’s question, his brow furrowing. What’s wrong? We made it! Said Smoke.Yes, we made it to the Soucouyant’s rooftop but there hasn’t been any fiery ball flying through the night’s sky and there’s no way we would have all missed that! That means she’s still at home, explained Hayden. But she’s harmless in her human form, isn’t she? Just a sweet old lady, right? Asked Mirrors. She can turn into the ball of fire at the drop of a hat and she’s just as evil in her human form if she’s willing to trap a whole village in their homes while she picks them off, feasting on their blood one by one, noted Venom, looking at Mirrors like he was crazy.Hayden nodded. We need to be as careful as po
Chapter 31: An Anxious AlphaPrince Hayden and Cory led the procession back to the village chief’s house. All around them were joyful cries. The vines continued to wither, thereby relinquishing their hold on villagers and leading to many a happy reunion. The villagers began to gather on either side of the long road to applaud the victorious group.Sprout was in his glee, dancing on Titan’s shoulder and waving to his new admirers. The Beta laughed at his tiny friend’s antics. The Twins waved politely at the happy villagers. Venom seemed somewhat saddened by the fact that the parasitic plants were wilting.“I really wanted to get a specimen,” he whispered in Cory’s ear. “But every clipping I take keeps withering and turning to dust. Look!” He said, showing her a blackened stem with dry leaves crumbling in his hand.“The Souco
Chapter 32: Shh “Do you smell that?” Asked Hayden, turning to his Beta. Titan nodded. Hayden and Titan tailed the scent all the way to the nearest brook. The trees grew closely together in this part of the forest. Their intertwined canopies blocked out the sunlight. The dark chilly atmosphere gave the Prince an unsettling feeling. He neared the stream and watched the water roll over the rocks. There were a few small fish swimming around the reeds springing up from the ground beneath the shallow water. A set of ripples drew his attention. Something was dripping into the water steadily, causing ripples to diverge. The Prince realised the dripping liquid was not colourless like the water but a dark red. With each added drop, the thick red substance slowly turned the water pink. Was this the blood they had smelled? With one sniff, he confirmed it. Yes, it was one and
Chapter 33: Grave “Are you sure you weren’t having a nightmare?” Asked Hayden hesitantly. The Prince caressed his mate’s cheek gently. He trailed his fingertips along her neck down to her shoulders. He squeezed the muscles there. “You’re tense,” he whispered. Cory shut her eyes tightly. She had been afraid of this. “You don’t believe me,” she whispered. Hayden sighed. “I saw Leech with my own eyes. I buried him,” revealed the Alpha. Cory locked eyes with Hayden. She cupped his face in her hands, pleading with him with her eyes. “You have to believe me,” she said. “I reached for you, to wake you up, to show you, thinking you were next to me,” said Cory. Hayden took her hand in his and brought it to his lips. “But you were gone,” said Cory so softly had the Prince not been an alpha, he would not have heard her. “I am sorry I did not wake you,” he murmured, ki
Chapter 34: An Acorn Among Mushrooms Cory sank down to her knees with her back against the shelf of earth. She realised she was crying. Venom had been good to her. The real Venom had been kind and she had felt comfortable around him. Now, he was gone and some evil doppelgänger had been left in his place. Blaython nudged her with his furry head. The tiger seemed greatly concerned about her. She looked into his glassy eyes and pet his head, thinking out loud, “If Venom is really here where Leech’s body should be, then the Venom at the feast is Leech. Who else could it be?” She said, looking into Blaython’s eyes. The tiger gave a definite nod. “Does this smell like the real Venom?” She asked. Blaython sniffed the corpse. He nodded. “Did the Venom at the feast smell like himself?” She asked. Blaython just stared at her. She took that to mean that he had not ha
