"No!" Callie's scream tore through the air, raw and desperate… as the distorted world shifted around her.

She watched in horror as rough hands grabbed her mother, yanking her arms behind her back. The rope came next, thick and coarse, wrapping around her wrists with brutal efficiency. Her mother's face twisted in fear and pain as they pulled the bindings tight.

"Help!" her mother shouted, her voice breaking on the word. "Callie, please!"

Her older brother fought back, throwing punches, trying to break free from the men surrounding him. He was strong, always had been, but there were too many of them. One of the men brought something heavy down on the side of his head.

Callie heard the sickening crack even from where she stood. Her brother stumbled, dazed, and they were on him in an instant. More rope, more hands, forcing him to the ground. Within seconds he was tied up just like their mother, unable to move, unable to fight anymore.

"No, please!" Callie tried to run toward them, her fe

Alex opened his eyes to sunlight streaming through the bedroom window, the kind of warm, golden light that made everything look softer. He stretched, his muscles protesting slightly from yesterday's training session, and turned to look at Amira beside him.She was already awake. And was practically vibrating with energy, sitting up in bed with this huge smile on her face, her eyes bright and shining."Okay," Alex said, his voice still rough with sleep. "What's going on?""What do you mean?" Amira turned to look at him, trying and failing to look innocent."You look like you just won the lottery or something. What happened?""Nothing happened." She leaned over and kissed his forehead. "I just have a good feeling about today."Alex raised an eyebrow, propping himself up on one elbow. "A good feeling. That's it?""That's it.""You're way too excited for just a good feeling." He narrowed his eyes playfully. "Are you hiding something? Did you plan some surprise? Should I be worried?"Amira

The days that followed blurred together in a haze of exhaustion and learning.Every morning, Callie woke before dawn to train with Benedict. He pushed her hard, never letting her slack, never accepting anything less than her best effort. But slowly, gradually, she started to improve. Her punches got stronger, her stances more stable. She learned to use her smaller size to her advantage, to be quick and unpredictable rather than trying to match raw strength."Good!" Benedict shouted one morning as she finally managed to land a hit on him… a glancing blow to his ribs, but a hit nonetheless. "See? You're not hopeless after all."Callie grinned, breathing hard. "Does this mean I'm getting better?""It means you're getting less terrible," he corrected. "But yes. You're improving."After each morning session with Benedict, she'd clean up quickly and go to Betty for her etiquette training. The older woman was exacting and precise, correcting every tiny mistake, but Callie was learning. Lea

Callie was before Luna Karter again, and this time she was to begin her training today. She was eager to learn everything… except weapon training. She pressed her lips together, contemplating her choices. "Luna?""Yes?""Do lycans have to train with weapons? Really?"Karter studied her for a moment, then reached out and placed a gentle hand on Callie's shoulder. "You’re going to need it. You cannot be caught offguard."The simple bluntness of her reply made Callie's eyes burn again. She nodded, not trusting herself to speak.Karter squeezed her shoulder once, then let go. "Now, before you leave, there's someone I want you to meet. Two someones, actually."She walked to the door and opened it, speaking briefly to someone outside. A moment later, two people entered the throne room. The first was a man, tall and broad-shouldered, with gray hair and a stern face that looked like it had been carved from granite. He wore the uniform of the palace guard, but with additional insignia that ma

They made camp that night near Blackwater Fall, far enough from the water that the sound wasn't deafening but close enough that Autumn could still hear it in the distance… a low, constant rumble.Korran had warmed up by the fire, his color returning to normal, though he still looked tired. Retrieving the stone had taken more out of him than he'd let on."You should rest," Autumn told him as she handed him a bowl of broth, it was warm."I'm fine.""You're exhausted.""I said I'm fine," he repeated, but there was no real heat in it. He took the cup from her, their fingers brushing. "Thank you."Across the fire, Lysa sat staring into the flames, her expression as blank as ever. Kael was sharpening his blade, the rhythmic sound of metal on stone almost soothing."Tomorrow we head for Veilwood," Korran said after a moment."How far is it?" Autumn asked."Two days' travel, if we push hard. Three if we don't.""And once we get there?""We retrieve the last stone." He looked at her over the r

The camp was already being packed up when Autumn left her tent that morning. Men moved with practiced efficiency, rolling up tents, securing supplies, checking weapons. The air smelled like smoke from dying fires and the damp earth of the forest floor.Korran stood near the center of it all, looking over a map spread across a makeshift table. He didn't look up when Autumn approached, but she knew he'd heard her. He always knew when she was near."We're leaving soon," he said, his voice carrying just enough to reach her."I know." Autumn stopped beside him, looking down at the map. She could see the markings, the locations of the remaining stones. Two left. Blackwater Fall Park and Veilwood Park. "I'm ready."Now he looked up, his eyes meeting hers. There was something in his gaze that made her breath catch. "Good. We travel light. Just the four of us.""Four?""You, me, Lysa, and Kael." He straightened, rolling up the map. "The fewer people, the faster we move. And the less attention

  • Prophecy Of The Lycan Queen   Chapter 101: Come For Me

The summons came early the next morning.Callie was sitting by the window in her room, watching the sun rise over the park grounds, when there was a soft knock at her door."Come in," she called.A servant entered, a young woman with dark hair pulled back in a neat bun. She curtsied quickly. "Miss Callie, the Luna requests your presence in the throne room."Callie's stomach dropped. "Now?""At your earliest convenience, miss." The servant's expression was neutral, but there was something in her eyes… maybe sympathy, maybe warning. "She said not to rush, but... I wouldn't keep the Luna waiting.""Right." Callie stood, smoothing down the simple dress she'd put on that morning. "Thank you."The servant curtsied again and left.Callie took a breath, trying to calm the nervous flutter in her chest. What could Karter possibly want with her? She'd been trying to keep a low profile since she had regained consciousness, staying out of everyone's way, not drawing attention to herself.Apparentl
