Chapter 83

Author: Laughing Riot
The square fell utterly silent.

Lilia's whip lay on the floor, snapped cleanly in two. It had taken only a single move. She had lost. And so completely.

Staring at the broken whip, Lilia's mind reeled. It was just one move! How could she possibly have been defeated so swiftly?

Back in Dawnmere, she feared only her elder brothers. Otherwise, she was undefeated. Not even Damon could match her skill. And yet here she was, undone in a single strike by this man before her.

"Go and bring her back," Elias said, casting a glance at Jade Verde, Lilia's maid.

Jade nodded immediately and hurried onto the stage. She helped the princess to her feet and said, "Your Highness, Prince Elias commands that you retire and rest."

"I won't—"

"Prince Elias is displeased," Jade murmured.

Though proud and headstrong, Lilia feared Elias more than anyone. She pressed her lips together and shot Sebastian a sharp, resentful glare.

Sebastian had not anticipated such weakness. One move, and she couldn't eve

William hurriedly replied, "Ms. Lester, His Highness has commanded that Ms. Talmar spend a few days in solitary reflection within her chambers. She has not been permitted to set foot in Moonchase Pavilion."Anna's brow furrowed deeply. "Why must she be confined? Could the rumors be true? Is it possible she drove Deputy General Lloyd to his death and, in doing so, brought grievous harm upon His Highness?"William hesitated. These matters were delicate, and he dared not speak carelessly."I can't claim to know the full truth. Perhaps it would be best to ask His Highness directly. I must see to the preparation of his medicine, so I shall take my leave for now."He spoke swiftly and departed without another word. Fortunately, it was Anna he was dealing with. If it had been Ruth, there would have been no chance of slipping away unscathed.Once Anna entered the room, she bent close to Ruth and whispered a few words. Though gravely wounded, Frederick was not so impaired as to miss the co

  • Provoking a Graceful Bloom   Chapter 166

For a time, the entire capital—from the king, queen, and concubines to the common folk in every street and alley—shared a single conviction: Selena Campbell loved Frederick Lancaster with unwavering devotion. The previous broken engagement, they reasoned, had been no slight to her character. It had occurred only because another woman captured the prince's attention, leaving Selena abandoned."Y-Your Highness, everyone outside is saying that it was you who abandoned Lady Campbell," William murmured when he returned from a walk. There was a trace of resentment in his voice, aimed, naturally, at his master, Frederick. Yet he dared not speak it aloud. He only softly said, "Your Highness, though their words are not entirely accurate, one thing is indisputably true."Frederick, seated on the bed, regarded the other man calmly. "And what might that be?"William stole a quick glance to ensure the prince remained untroubled and serene, then continued, "Lady Campbell's devotion to you is g

Selena truly pushed the men aside and strode towards the exit. Frederick tried to rise twice, frantic to stop her, but William forced him back each time."Your Highness, I'll guard Lady Campbell. Don't move again."William was loath to leave the prince, yet watching Selena's back vanishing into the mist set his heart aflame. At last, he couldn't stay still any longer and hurried after her, followed by a dozen or so soldiers. What they found left them dumbfounded."Lady Campbell, what…"Though each man trembled at the thought of death and had been startled by the bandits' stray arrows, they were men of honor. How could they stand idly by while Selena ventured forth alone, accompanied by a mere maid, to certain death?Even if it meant death, they vowed to shield her and die with her.But after only a dozen steps, the mist had been swept away entirely, revealing open land ahead. Behind them, the stone forest still lay shrouded and sinister. William and his comrades gaped, disbelief

"I won't go!" Freya exclaimed, instinctively retreating.Behind her was Frederick, laying on the stretcher. She hurried to his side, grasping his hand. "Fred, you wouldn't believe me when I told you that Selena wanted to get rid of me! Do you believe me now?""Someone must lead the way," Selena said, her gaze on Frederick.Though he was weak, half asleep, and dazed from the journey, she knew he was aware."If your prince were uninjured, he would go himself. As his woman, you should act as he would. Otherwise, you have no right to stand beside him," she added.Freya's cheeks flamed. She bristled with indignation, yet part of her truly feared that Selena would push her forward. Frederick's face was flushed as well, though whether from embarrassment or something else, no one could tell. When he tried to rise, William looked terrified and immediately urged, "Your Highness, you're still wounded! Don't strain yourself. I'll go in your stead."But before William even finished speaking

When the stretcher was ready, William and another soldier carefully lifted Frederick onto it. He roused faintly, the pain of his wounds sharp and unrelenting, his body wracked with fever. As Selena led the way, the men followed close behind. Though Freya stayed by Frederick's side, her hand never leaving his, he gave no response. Too weak to resist, he let her hold it as she pleased."Clinging to him like that here, does she fear the world might not know they're a couple?" Sally muttered under her breath, casting them a disdainful glance."Keep your attention on the way ahead," Selena instructed cooly.Seeing how indifferent her mistress was, Sally decided to follow suit. After all, if Frederick was a man Selena didn't want, whether he and Freya held hands or embraced in public mattered little. After quite some time of walking, there was still only jagged stone all around them, with no sign of escape. At last, Freya could no longer contain herself and exclaimed, "Selena, do you e

When Frederick sealed Freya's acupoint earlier, he had already been gravely wounded. With his strength and inner energy waning, the strike had lacked its usual power. No sooner had William asked his question than the hold upon Freya loosened, and she sprang up as if roused from a dream."What business have you here? You know nothing of fighting! You can't save the men, and you only bring them false hope before plunging them back into despair. That is worse than killing them!" she yelled furiously.Selena glanced at her calmly, then turned her gaze to the pale horizon. A faint wash of dawn was already brightening the east. She faced the men again and said, "My power is limited. I can't tend to every wounded man, and must do my utmost to save Prince Frederick. I'm sure everyone is aware that if His Highness dies, none of us may hope to survive."Her voice was low, yet in the hush that had fallen around them, every man heard it. The truth of it stung, but none could deny it. The prin
