LOGINGianna's POV
Ryker didn't move from the wall. He just stood there, completely shirtless, letting his gray eyes slowly track the line of my throat down to where my fingers clutched the strap of my bag. The dark tattoo of the breaking storm on his arm shifted with the slight movement of his muscles. He looked completely at home, while I felt like I was standing on a fault line.
"There's been a mistake," I said, my voice tight. I forced my eyes to stay locked on his face, refusing to look down at the hard contours of his chest. "The housing office said this was an emergency placement. I'll go back and make them change it."
"Go ahead," Ryker murmured, a small, arrogant tilt to his lips. "But unless you're planning on sleeping in the equipment shed, you're stuck here. The whole campus is locked down over that flood."
He stepped away from the wall, and walked into the small kitchen, his bare feet silent against the hardwood floor. He pulled a carton of milk from the fridge, took a long drink straight from the carton, and slammed it back onto the shelf. Every movement was aggressive, heavy, and completely unbothered by my presence.
I didn't move from the doorway. "We need to set some rules."
Ryker paused, his hand still on the fridge door. He turned his head slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Rules?"
"Yes," I said, stepping further into the room and dropping my bag onto the small gray couch. "I don't look at your things, you don't touch mine. We keep our schedules completely separate. And you don't bring your team or your girls into this suite. I need quiet."
Ryker let out a low, rough laugh that vibrated through the small space. He closed the fridge door with a heavy thud and walked over to the granite island, leaning his hands flat against the dark surface. He was so close I could smell the sharp, clean scent of his soap mixed with the faint, lingering smell of the rink.
"Let's get something straight, freshman," he said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "You're a guest in my space. I've had this suite to myself since last year. I don't change my life for a no-name transfer who can't even tell me her real identity."
My heart stopped for a fraction of a second. I kept my face completely blank, a skill I had perfected after years of facing harsh sports judges. "I told you. My name is Gianna Cole."
"Sure it is," he whispered. He leaned further over the island, his gray eyes burning into mine with an intense, probing focus. "But you don't move like a freshman, Cole. And you definitely don't look like a girl who belongs in a rundown Vermont sports school. You're hiding something. And I hate secrets in my house."
"Think whatever you want," I snapped, grabbing my duffel bag off the couch. "Just stay out of my way."
I walked past the island, my shoulder brushing against his bare arm. A sudden, violent jolt of heat shot straight through my skin at the contact, making my breath hitch. I didn't look back. I marched down the short hallway, found the door marked with a temporary sticky note with my name on it, and threw it open.
The room was small and bare—just a twin bed, a wooden desk, and a single window overlooking the snow-covered quad. I stepped inside, slammed the heavy oak door shut, and instantly turned the lock until it clicked.
I let out a long, ragged breath, pressing my back against the wood. My hands were trembling again.
I spent the next two hours unpacking my few belongings, trying to drown out the low noise of Ryker’s movements in the next room. Every time a floorboard creaked outside my door, my muscles tightened. I couldn't let him get too close to me. He was way too observant— too dominant, and way too dangerous for someone trying to stay dead to the world.
******
By midnight, the suite had gone completely silent.
My stomach let out a sharp, painful growl. I hadn't eaten anything since a stale protein bar at five yesterday afternoon, and the nerves from the housing crisis had completely masked my hunger until now.
I waited another ten minutes, listening intently at the door. Nothing. Just the faint whistle of the wind against my window.
I unlocked the door quietly, sliding it open just an inch. The living room was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint gray light of the snow coming through the main window. I stepped out barefoot, keeping my steps light as I crept toward the kitchen to find a glass of water and whatever snack I could find in my bag.
I reached down into my duffel bag, which I had left on the kitchen stool, and pulled out my phone to use the screen light.
The second the screen illuminated, a loud, sharp buzz vibrated through my hand.
An unknown number was flashing on the black screen.
My breath caught in my throat. Nobody had this number except the university administration. I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the glass before I finally slid the bar to open the text message.
*“Nice try with the black hair, Gianna. But a thief can’t hide forever. See you very soon.”*
A cold wave of pure terror washed over me, freezing the blood in my veins. My ex-coach obviously. He had found me.
My hands shook so violently the phone slipped from my fingers, clattering loudly against the hard granite island. I gasped, stumbling backward in the dark, my heel catching the leg of the heavy kitchen stool.
I braced for the fall, my eyes closing as I prepared to hit the hard floor.
Instead, a pair of massive, strong-hard hands clamped around my waist from behind, pulling me backward against a solid, warm chest.
"Who the hell is texting you at midnight, Cole?" Ryker’s voice growled directly into my ear, his breath hot against my neck as his grip tightened, pinning my small frame flush against his heavy body.
Gianna’s POV I turned quickly, my boots making no sound on the cold concrete steps. I needed to get out of the rink immediately. The scout's words kept repeating in my head—a liability, a fake girlfriend. If the NHL team dug into my past to check on Ryker's life, they would find out I didn't exist. They would find out I was running from something far worse than a bad reputation."Going somewhere, Cole?"I froze halfway down the back stairs. The voice didn't come from behind me. It came from the bottom of the exit stairwell, echoing off the cinderblock walls.I looked down and saw Jaxson Reed was leaning against the heavy metal exit door, his arms crossed over his chest. He was wearing his team's blue varsity jacket, and his skates were slung over his shoulder by the laces. He looked up at me, a slow, ugly smirk spreading across his face."What are you doing here, Reed?" I frowned. I instinctively pulled my baseball cap lower, hiding my face in the shadow of the brim."I could ask yo
Gianna’s POV The apartment felt too big and too quiet after Ryker left. I tried to study, but the words on my textbook pages didn't seem to make sense. My mind kept drifting back to the way his eyes looked in the dark car. I needed to get out of the penthouse. Around noon, I noticed Ryker’s black knee brace sitting on the small table by the front door. He had forgotten it. I knew from his injury file that his right knee suffered from chronic swelling after long practices. If he skated all day without it, especially with his shoulder already bruised, he would be in no shape to play against Jaxson Reed on Friday. I grabbed the brace, threw on a big black jacket, and pulled a baseball cap low over my eyes. ****** The campus ice rink was on the south side of the university. The building was a massive concrete structure that smelled like old ice, damp gear, and hot chocolate. I walked through the side doors, avoiding the main lobby where students usually hung out. The hallway lea
Gianna’s POV I couldn't move. My eyes stayed locked on his lips, my heart thumping so hard against my ribs I thought it would burst. The space between us felt electric. Ryker’s thumb stayed warm against my lower lip, his fingers holding my chin steady. He leaned in a fraction of an inch closer, his eyes darkening. Then, a harsh, loud buzz cut through the quiet car. Ryker’s phone buzzed to life beside the cup holder between us, the vibration rattling the plastic. The bright screen lit up his dashboard, flashing a number with a New York area code. I pulled my chin out of his grip and pressed myself back against the passenger seat, smoothing down the green silk of my dress. My breathing was ragged. Ryker cursed loudly, punching his hand against the steering wheel before grabbing the phone. He looked at the screen, his expression turning cold, before swiping the screen. "Speak," he barked into the receiver. He listened for a moment, his broad shoulders tensing up again. He d
Gianna’s POV The applause for the athletic director died down, but Ryker’s hand immediately found mine again. He held my fingers in a firm grip, anchoring me to his side as the waiters began serving champagne. But before we could take a step toward our table, a shadow fell over us."Barrett," a sharp, gravelly voice barked.Ryker froze. The relaxed, intense look in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, professional look. He turned around smoothly. "Coach Vance. Good evening."Coach Vance was a short, thick-necked man with graying hair and an icy stare. He was the head coach of the university hockey team, and he ran the program like a military camp. He didn't look at me. His eyes were locked completely on Ryker."I saw what happened on the dance floor with Reed," Coach Vance said, his voice low so the nearby donors couldn't hear. "You're the captain of this team, Barrett. You are already on thin ice with the athletic board because of that locker room incident. The scouts a
Gianna’s POV Jaxson looked down at Ryker’s iron grip on his wrist. His face turned a dangerous shade of red, but he saw the dark fury in Ryker’s gray eyes. Ryker looked ready to start a stadium brawl right there on the white carpet. Jaxson slowly pulled his hand back, trying to act cool."Just a joke, Barrett," Jaxson muttered, taking a step away. "See you on the ice next Friday."Jaxson disappeared into the crowded ballroom, but Ryker didn't relax. His chest was still rising and falling fast, his shoulders tense under his black tuxedo. He turned around to face me. His eyes swept over my bare shoulders and down the green silk of my dress."Come with me," Ryker muttered softly. He grabbed my hand and didn't even wait for my answer, before pulling me through the crowd of donors and coaches, straight toward the center of the ballroom where couples were slow dancing under the massive crystal chandeliers."Ryker, what are you doing?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Peop
Gianna’s POV Friday night arrived too quickly. The university’s annual mid-season athletic gala was held in the grand ballroom downtown. It was the biggest event of the semester, filled with flashing cameras, wealthy donors, and the entire hockey team in formal suits.I stood in front of the mirror in my bedroom, taking a deep breath. For the first time since running away, I wasn't wearing baggy clothes or a hockey jersey. I wore a fitted, dark emerald-green silk dress with a low back and a high slit up the left leg. My blonde hair was pinned up, leaving my neck bare. I looked like a completely different person. When I stepped out into the living room, Ryker was waiting by the door.He was wearing a tailored black tuxedo that made his broad shoulders and chest look attractive and tempting. His hair was styled perfectly back. When he heard my heels click on the floor, he turned around, but stopped dead on his tracks immediately. His gray eyes darkened instantly, sweeping down the le
