Skye

Thoughts of last night assault me the minute I rouse from sleep. A huge smile stretches across my face as I remember how it felt to be held in Nicolai’s arms while he eased the hormone spike that hit me out of nowhere.

I should be embarrassed, humiliated, mortified right now. Instead, I just feel… sated. Content in a way I haven’t felt in a very long time.

I stretch my heavy limbs but I’m not surprised when I don’t feel him next to me. I knew he wouldn’t stay. He said it didn’t have to me

I only hope that if she lets Jaxon be a real presence in their son’s life and starts keeping Nic out of the side of it way more, otherwise she is no better than Jaxon was with Cassandra.

  • Pursuing My Rejected Luna   Ch. 44

NoahIt’s been two days since my confrontation with Piper about my relationship with Cassandra. The one where I finally told her the truth. Two days to think about what the hell I’m doing with my life and who I’m doing it with. And while that was long enough for me to make some important decisions, it’s still way too short to convince my wolf those decisions are the right ones. Not that my timeline matters much right now. None of my decisions mean anything until Piper makes her own. And I know her well enough by now to know when Piper makes a decision, she makes it and then she shows up to deliver it. She’s not in the habit of drawing it out just to make a point. So I’m not the least bit surprised when she comes to my office ready to talk. Private. Deliberate. Determined. She looks like a woman who has been doing some real thinking and arrived at a decision she's comfortable with. I’m just not sure she’s decided it’s me. I’ve always found confidence in a woman sexy and she’s no ex

Cassandra I can’t avoid it any longer. It’s the end of the day and I have a folder to return to Noah’s office—he asked for it by four and I'm only ten minutes under the deadline. It means I have to face him and I’ve been dreading it since Cole told me this morning. He's on a call when I come in and the relief of knowing I can sneak out without a confrontation is palpable. He looks up, nods—leave it—and goes back to the call, barely acknowledging my presence. Thank fuck. I set the folder on the desk, intent on making a quick retreat. I'm turning to leave when I see it. On the corner of the desk, where Liam draws when he comes in the mornings. The crayon drawing. The one Liam made of the three of us and insisted he give it to the Alpha. I never expected him to keep it. But there it is, in pride of place on his desk. Not stuffed in a drawer, not in the bin that's visible under the desk's left side. On the desk where he works. Where he’ll see it everyday. Where Liam can see that he ke

Cassandra Piper knows. It’s the first thing that pops in my head when I see the look she’s giving me this morning. Well, that and the fact that she’s stopped avoiding me and actually started looking at me directly, which is somehow worse than the avoidance.Honestly, I preferred it when she was avoiding me. I’m used to people avoiding me here, even learned not to let it bother me. And with Piper, I could manage where I was and when and not put either of us in unnecessary proximity. It was uncomfortable but it was navigable. Now she’s looking and I have no idea how I meant to react to that.I could understand if she was being openly hostile with me. I’ve certainly dealt with my share of that too. But this isn’t hostility. She’s looking at me like she's trying to understand me. I don’t have much experience with that kind of look.Which brings me back to my original thought. Noah told her. I don't know how much. I don't know what version he gave her. But she definitely knows. The look sh

Noah Piper glares at me from the end of the hallway, her arms crossed over her chest and a determined air about her that tells me I’m not getting out of this conversation no matter how much I wish otherwise. I guess I should consider myself lucky. A pissed off Piper is better than a hurt Piper any day.She has the look of a woman who has suspected something for a while and just had it confirmed. The righteous indignation of knowing she’s been right all along, despite my attempts to convince her otherwise."Who is she to you?" she demands the second I reach her, not giving me a chance to deflect."She's here under a pack arrangement." I spit the first thing that comes to mind. I hear myself say it and know it's insufficient before she does."Noah." She sighs my name. And the disappointment in that sigh is enough to break my resolve."She's complicated," I hang my head, my tone apologetic. "But everything that happened between us happened before. There is nothing between us now.""Befor

NoahWhat the fuck am I doing? Who even am I?I never dreamed I’d be the kind of guy who torments a woman just to watch her squirm, in a non-sexy way at least. But then again, I never thought I’d be the guy whose mate rejected him either. That kind of pain changes you. I knew she was watching me with Piper. And I knew seeing us together was painful for her, could smell it in the way her scent curdled. Just knowing should have been enough. I didn’t have to tell her I knew, taunt her with it. But it wasn’t enough so I did it anyway. Then I watched it land, saw the impact of it on her face before she could hide it from me. And I liked knowing I hurt her too. Now, though, I have to live with myself, live with being the kind of man who likes it. I've been hurting someone on purpose and finding it less satisfying than I expected but satisfying enough to be uncomfortable with it.And yet, knowing that about myself doesn’t change anything. Even knowing Cassandra isn’t the only victim in my

  • Pursuing My Rejected Luna   Ch. 39

Cassandra After my run in with Noah, I go back to my room and just sit on the edge of the bed, staring at the wall. I may not interact with him often, but every encounter seems to take more and more out of me, leaving me so spent afterwards, I can barely do more than breathe. It’s worth it, I tell myself. As long as Liam is safe and happy, it’s worth it. And to be honest, there’s a bit of pride mixed in with the other jumble of emotions I’m feeling. I was honest. Out loud, directly, to his face. Yes, it bothers me. I didn't plan to. I'm not sure it was wise. I'm not sure it changes anything or helps anything or makes any of this easier. But I think it was right anyway. My old mantra would have been: don't give him ammunition. Don't let him see you hurt, even by things you earned. Maintain the appearance of equanimity because equanimity is defensible.I told him the truth instead. And I'm sitting here thinking about what it costs to keep paying for choices you've already paid for—be

SkyeI press forward, though I'm not even sure which direction forward is anymore. At some point, my wolf stops talking. The silence inside me is worse than the howling wind.I'm alone now. Truly alone. Just me and the storm and the cold that's seeping into places I didn't know could go numb.I can

Skye Cassandra turns, and if I didn't know better, I'd think the guilt on her face was genuine. "Skye. I'm so sorry, this must look—""What is this?" I repeat, louder now.Jaxon moves past me, his expression hard. "It's temporary. Cassandra and Liam need a place to stay until we can arrange somethi

Skye I want to believe Noah. God, I want to believe that some part of Jaxon actually cares. But I've spent three years reading meaning into empty gestures, and I can't do it anymore."The elders won't let him cast you aside," Noah continues. "You've earned their respect. More than that—you've earne

Skye The words drop into the silence like stones into still water.Jaxon's eyes narrow. "What did you just say?""You heard me." My hands are steady now, even as my heart splinters. "Whatever sick arrangement you and Cassandra have planned, count me out. I won't be part of this.""You don't mean th
