Chapter 3

Author: Nina Thorne
I snapped back to focus and looked at the beast in front of me.

No matter what happened, I had to get out of the arena before I could go after any of them.

The creature stood over twice my height, its entire body covered in hard black scales. Finding an opening was not going to be easy.

It seemed to sense the killing intent that radiated off me. It let out a deafening roar, slammed its front claws into the ground, and lunged.

I threw myself sideways just in time.

It was a savage thing, one that had survived countless fights to the death in the arena.

With that in mind, I committed to the risk of losing an arm and ripped a scale off its body. Then I drove that same scale into both of its eyes, one after the other, and finally into its heart.

I kept my gaze locked on Troy the entire time as I tore out the beast’s core and swallowed it whole.

“You want to kill me? This was not even close to enough.”

Up in the stands, the crowd that had been cheering for the beast went silent in shock. A second later, thunderous applause erupted and echoed through every corner of the arena.

Vanessa screamed. Troy shot to his feet, humiliated, and started barking orders at the arena staff to come at me again.

Still, the barrier around the arena did not only keep me from escaping. It also kept everything on the outside from reaching me.

By the time the staff figured that out and dropped the barrier, I had already absorbed the core.

I swept my hand in a single motion, and every guard blocking the exit went flying. I walked toward Troy and Vanessa, one slow step at a time, and smiled coldly.

“Long time no see. I should thank you two for sending that beast my way. Without the core, I never would have broken free this easily.”

Their faces went pale with rage, eyes burning with fury and disbelief.

Troy glared at me. “Do not get cocky. Today is the day you die.”

He swung his fist and charged at me.

I sidestepped without effort, dodged the blow, and backhanded him so hard he hit the ground. He tried to scramble up, but I planted my foot on his chest and pinned him there.

Vanessa stumbled backward in terror.

“Have you lost your mind? Do you even know who he is? Troy is one of the Demon King’s most trusted men. If the Demon King finds out what happened here, what do you think he will do to you? Let him go. Now.”

I scoffed, shaped my fingers into a blade, and gouged out both of Troy’s eyes.

“Is that so? Then bring your Demon King out here. I would love to see what kind of man he is.”

Troy shrieked like a slaughtered animal, so I kicked him aside.

“Be quiet. One more sound and I will kill you.”

That silenced him fast. After I kicked him away, he clamped both hands over his mouth and did not dare make another noise, terrified that any sound would draw my attention back to him.

I looked up at the other star of the show with a cold smile.

Vanessa trembled from head to toe under my gaze and backed away step by step.

“Who are you? You are not my husband. He is only a mortal.”

I let out a dry laugh. “Good thing I am not. Otherwise, I would have had to swallow this humiliation and live with it.”

I extended my right hand. “Bring me a whip.”

The words had barely left my mouth before one of the quicker demons scrambled over, shaking from head to toe, and placed a whip in my hand.

I gripped it tight and turned to Vanessa. My voice was ice.

“He gave me his eyes. You take one lash. That sounds fair to me.”

Vanessa went white as a sheet and dropped to her knees. “Please. Do not… Do not hit me.”

Her voice shook as she pleaded, dragging up every memory of what we once shared, desperate to reach whatever softness had been left inside me. However, my hellfire was gone, and so was the heart that had once loved her.

I raised the whip without hesitation.

A familiar voice cut through the air just as it was about to come down on her.

“How dare you. I would like to see who has the nerve to lay a hand on the Demon Queen.”

Someone rushed forward and shielded Vanessa behind them.

I raised an eyebrow at the woman standing in front of me. It was Iris Wren.

She had been an orphan I found in the Valley of the Forsaken and raised at my side. After I married Vanessa in the mortal world, there had been many things I could not handle personally, and Iris had taken care of all of them on my behalf.

In Vanessa’s eyes, Iris had always been her mysterious benefactor, the one who helped her from the shadows.

The reason Iris had not been around lately was because I had sent her to prepare a birthday gift for Vanessa.

“Iris. What did you just say? You know the Demon King? Did he really say he wants to make me his queen?”

Vanessa was so caught up in the question that she did not notice the way Iris’s expression changed the moment she turned back to look at me. It lasted only a second.

Iris composed herself and bowed.

“My lord, the wounds on your face…”

Vanessa tried to dodge, but Troy caught her by the wrist. The two of them grappled on the ground. Troy shoved Vanessa down, and she dragged him with her as she fell.“Do not even think about it, Troy. You think I do not know what you are planning? This ring is mine. I got to it first, and you are not taking it from me.”I stood to the side with my arms folded, watching the two of them claw at each other like animals fighting to survive.A mocking smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. Every ounce of pain they had once put me through was now playing out on them in full. The tables had turned.“Desperate times, every man for himself. Quite a show, is it not, old man?”The High Priest had lost his eyes and taken a hit to his power, but he had lived far too long for me to trust that he did not have something else hidden. With both Vanessa and Troy still in the picture, I did not want a single thing going wrong. So I chose to let the old man off for the time being and put him to wo

I laughed.“So what you were saying is that if I broke all four of your limbs and tossed you into a jar of brine, you would keep on living. Is that right?”Troy’s face drained of color. He stared at me, shaking. “You… how could you even say that? Do you not have any sense of decency?”“Decency?” My gaze swept back and forth between Troy and Vanessa.“I would say mine was already miles above either of yours. You want to talk to me about decency now? Where was all that decency when you two schemed over my insurance money and shoved me into the Demon Pit?”Something flickered behind Troy’s eyes, as though a realization had struck him. He scrambled away from Vanessa’s side and rolled across the floor to put distance between them, his voice trembling.“Demon King, if you want this woman, she is yours. Take her. There is no reason for the two of us to fall out over someone like her.”I looked at the pathetic display in front of me and felt nothing but contempt. So this was the man Van

The High Priest had always been cautious.Even after Troy told him outright that my hellfire was extinguished, he still did not dare make a move against me.That was exactly why I pushed harder. The more ruthless and unreasonable I appeared, the more he would overthink. And the more he overthought, the less willing he would be to act.Sure enough, once the High Priest saw that I was goading him on purpose, the fight drained out of him entirely.I smiled and tilted his chin up with one hand. “What is the matter? Need me to do it for you?”His body began to tremble on its own. After a struggle that felt impossibly brief and agonizingly long, he slowly raised his hand and reached toward his own eyes, shaking the entire time.“My king, I will… I will do as you say.”His voice was raw and broken. His fingers hovered in front of his face. He hesitated for a moment, then gritted his teeth and tore out both of his eyes. The scream that followed echoed through the Hall of Judgment, shar

I forced my way straight into the Hall of Judgment.I had Troy and Vanessa in one hand and the gate general in the other, and I threw all of them down at the High Priest’s feet.“I was gone for a few days and not a single person in this entire Hall recognized me. Old man, were you trying to overthrow me?”The High Priest’s face went white. He scrambled out of his seat and dropped to his knees.“My king, you must not say such things. Even if I wanted to, I would not dare. Please, my king, see the truth for what it is.”I scoffed, settled into the throne, and pointed at the people on the floor.“Then explain how the entire realm came to believe I was handing my title to this nobody, and that he had free run of my Hall.”When he saw that my expression had not softened, the High Priest switched to looking pitiful. He started pleading through tears.“No, my king, those were never my words. I would never dare say such a thing. Rumors twist as they spread. I have been wrongly accused.

“What a joke.”I slapped Corvin hard across the face.“I did not even know who he was. How could I have passed my title to him?“You were supposed to be my closest confidant. Something this massive happened in the demon realm, and it never once occurred to you to get word to me?”Corvin shook so badly he could barely hold himself upright. He threw himself at my feet, his voice breaking into sobs.“My lord, I had no choice. When you left the demon realm, you told us to follow the High Priest’s orders in all things. How was I supposed to question him?”I let out a cold scoff and looked down at the man groveling at my feet.I still remembered the look on his face in the arena. The only reason he put on this performance now was because he did not yet know my hellfire had been extinguished. He believed I had my full power back. The moment I showed even a flicker of weakness, this act would disappear.“Get out of my sight.”I had what I needed. I waved him off and turned to Iris.

Before I could speak, Vanessa let out a shrill cry from the side.“Iris, what are you doing? He is only a mortal. I have nothing to do with him anymore. You do not need to bow to him. Let us get back to what we were talking about. You said the Demon King is going to marry me, right?”Iris’s brow furrowed, and she kept glancing back at me.When I nodded, she shook her head.“He will not. He will not be marrying you.”“Why not? You just said—”Iris raised a hand and cut her off. “The Demon King has no need for someone who betrayed him.”Vanessa froze. Her eyes snapped to me, and the smile on her face locked in place like a mask. She stepped forward without thinking, her voice trembling with cautious hope. “Iris, what do you mean by that? Are you saying he is the Demon King?”She let out a bitter laugh at herself. “No. That is impossible. He is only a useless mortal. How could he possibly be the Demon King? You are joking. You have to be joking.”Iris did not bother with her any
