Chapter 3

Author: Moore
My mind went blank. Ignoring the dizziness, I propped myself upright, my breathing uneven.

"Tobias, I'm already in the terminal stage of silver poisoning. If I don't take the antidote, I'll hemorrhage and die."

His expression stiffened.

Before he could respond, Nicholas suddenly burst into the room, his face contorted with anger. "Mommy, you hurt Aunt Whitney, and now you want to take her antidote too?"

He began to cry, tears of indignation rolling down his cheeks as he turned to Tobias. "Mommy was fine before, and now she suddenly says she's poisoned… You always tell me kids shouldn't lie, so why is Mommy lying?"

I leaned weakly against the bed.

"I'm not lying… Nicholas, I got injured by silver while trying to save you two years ago. You remember that, don't you?"

"That was just a tiny injury. You could've just dealt with it. You always bring it up, and I'm sick of hearing it!"

The cruel, careless words ripped from his mouth, each cutting deeply.

Tobias' face darkened, and for once, he scolded Nicholas. "Watch your tone. Apologize to your mother."

Nicholas seemed to realize he'd gone too far. His eyes reddened as he looked at me with a pitiful, aggrieved expression. "I'm sorry, Mommy…"

I endured the pain in my chest and buried my face in the blanket, refusing to say another word to them both.

After standing there for a moment, Tobias quietly led the sniffling child out of the room. Tears slipped from the corner of my eye, disappearing into the white pillowcase.

Just then, my phone lit up with a message from the Werewolf Affairs Office.

My application to dissolve the mate bond had been approved.

From that moment, Tobias and I had nothing to do with each other anymore.

As long as I took the antidote tomorrow, I would leave for good and never appear before them ever again.

The next morning, Nicholas showed up at my bedside with a bouquet of nightbreaths.

"Mommy, I'm sorry. I was wrong. Can you stop being mad at me?"

His eyes were red, like he'd been crying. He curled into my arms the way he used to when he was younger, his voice soft.

"I shouldn't have made you mad. Daddy already scolded me."

As I looked at the small body nestled against me, the wall I had built around my heart cracked just a little.

"I'm not mad."

It was the first time Nicholas had ever sincerely apologized to me. He was only five. He didn't understand everything, so I shouldn't be too harsh on him.

He looked up at me, his eyes bright. "Mommy, you're really not mad anymore?"

He beamed happily before pouting. "I want to eat barbecue ribs, but Daddy is busy. Mommy, can you take me?"

He immediately clamped a hand over his mouth. "Oh no, you're sick. You can't go out with me."

Despite everything, I took his small hand in mine and offered a gentle smile. "It's okay. I'll take you."

Even though my body was already on the verge of collapse, I forced myself to get dressed and leave the pack infirmary with him.

Once I took the antidote, I would be leaving, so I wanted to have one proper meal with him before I went.

At the market, Nicholas suddenly clutched his stomach. "Mommy, I need to use the restroom!"

He rushed to the restroom, leaving me to wait out there.

But half an hour passed, and there was still no sign of him. My failing body was barely holding itself together, and a sense of unease crept over me.

I slowly pushed the restroom door open and called out, "Nicholas?"

The only response I got was the chilling, metallic click of a lock falling into place.

I instantly sensed something was off, so I turned and rushed toward the exit, but the door had been locked from the outside. In my poisoned state, I couldn't force it open.

"Nicholas, is that you? Open the door!"

His laughter echoed from the outside, bright with satisfaction. "Aunt Whitney's plan worked out perfectly! Now, you won't fight her for the antidote."

A chill ran down my spine, but the pain left me too weak to even pound on the door.

"Nicholas, let me out," I said weakly. "Without the antidote, I'll die."

But Nicholas simply giggled through the door. "You won't die, Mommy. Daddy said he'll get you the next dose. Just let Aunt Whitney have this one to make up for hurting her. Alright, I'm going to go keep her company now. Stay in there like a good girl, Mommy!"

I mustered all of my strength and screamed for help, but it was useless.

My blood cells felt like they were tearing themselves apart from the inside. Every inch of me was rejecting itself, splitting, and collapsing.

I knew what hemorrhaging felt like, but there was nothing I could do to stop it.

The silver spread like a shadow, consuming me bit by bit.

Right before death took me, only a single thought lingered in my mind. When Tobias and Nicholas found out I was dead, would they regret it at all?

When Tobias woke up in the pack infirmary, Matthew was right by his bedside. "Alpha, you're finally awake."Tobias stared at him for a moment before asking, "What did you use to calm me down?"At the very last moment, he had thought he caught my scent.Matthew told him that it was something I had prepared ahead of time, an item carrying my scent. Our wolves had chosen each other, and only my scent could calm him whenever he lost control."Cordelia…"Tobias' voice was laced with agony. He finally learned of my death from Matthew.Without the antidote, I had died of silver poisoning when I hemorrhaged.Whitney had people dump my body in a dark forest. It took Matthew a long time to recover what remained of me and bury me.Tobias looked like he was about to lose it.He couldn't accept that he and Nicholas had a hand in causing my death, so he placed all the blame on Whitney. If she hadn't taken my antidote, I wouldn't have died. When he ordered people to drive Whitney out of t

"You're saying Cordelia dissolved our mate bond? How is that even possible?"Tobias looked like he was on the verge of losing it. He had sent Matthew to track me down, and this was the answer he got."It's true, Alpha. Luna Cordelia filed for dissolution of your mate bond half a month ago. The day she went missing was the same day the mate bond officially ended."Matthew sounded frustrated. He had gone to great lengths to try to find any trace of me and had come up empty. He had even nearly been stripped of his position over it.Now that he finally had something concrete, it seemed Tobias was far from satisfied with it."That's impossible. Cordelia loves me. There's no way she would leave me!"Tobias simply couldn't come to terms with such a crushing reality. "Find her. I don't care where she is. Bring her back!"He needed to hear it from me himself. He needed to know why I could be so ruthless as to walk away like that.Battered and defeated, Tobias returned to the mansion.T

Tobias froze. "What did you just say? That's impossible. Cordelia has always been healthy. How could she possibly be in the terminal stage of silver poisoning? How much money did she pay you to help her spin such an outrageous lie?"The panic in his chest pushed him to say things without thinking.William was enraged. "Alpha, even if I'm punished for this, I won't lie against my conscience. The pack infirmary didn't have the means to treat it, so her condition deteriorated until it reached the terminal stage. "She fought so hard just to hold on until that antidote was finally ready, and you took away her only chance to survive. How could you do that?"His words cut deep, leaving Tobias gasping for air. "Is that really true? No… that can't be. If it were, why didn't she tell me…"He trailed off abruptly. He recalled how strongly I had refused when he asked for that antidote. I told him that I would die without it, but what did he do in response? He didn't believe me. He even all

On Whitney's first day in the mansion, she put on a flawless performance. She was gentle, hardworking, and always smiling as she played with Nicholas. She even took the initiative to cook for them.Tobias' restless mood eased slightly, while Nicholas stuck to her side like an excited little puppy. However, Whitney clearly wasn't good at handling raw meat, and the food she made didn't quite meet their expectations. After taking a bite, Nicholas frowned and said without thinking, "This doesn't taste like Mommy's cooking."He noticed Whitney's wounded expression, and a wave of regret washed over him immediately as he backpedaled to comfort her."It's okay… I mean, I don't really like Mommy's cooking either."He forced the half-cooked meat into his mouth and chewed quickly, trying to prove that he liked it.That night, Nicholas was rushed to the pack infirmary when his blood went out of control."How could you feed him something with frostsilver vine? Don't you know he's allergic

"Stefan! Where is Luna Cordelia?"Tobias' voice rang out sharply, though there was a trace of unease beneath it.His butler, Stefan Goddard, hurried over, his tone flustered. "Alpha, Luna hasn't returned these past few days you were away. Wasn't she admitted to the infirmary? Two days ago, the pack healer burst into the mansion and took her away. She was unconscious at the time, and she looked seriously ill."Tobias' expression shifted, and even Nicholas looked unsettled.Whitney stepped forward immediately, her voice heavily laced with insinuation as she addressed Stefan. "That can't be right. When she chased me with a dagger, I couldn't even get away from her, and she still managed to hurt me."How did she suddenly collapse right after I was hospitalized? Isn't that a little too much of a coincidence?"Her words landed exactly where she wanted them to.Tobias' face darkened, and Nicholas said with certainty, "Mommy even took me out to buy barbecue ribs. She's definitely not si

The moment I hemorrhaged, the silver surged through me and killed my wolf almost instantly. It didn't even have time to cry out before it vanished from my body. With my wolf gone, my body began to break down piece by piece. It happened so fast that I couldn't even react.A cold force pierced straight through my heart, and my heartbeat flatlined in an instant. I lay there quietly on the floor, while my soul drifted upward. When I looked down, I could still see my own corpse, my face twisted in agony from the way I'd died. All my emotions seemed to disappear as I died. Looking at my own body, I even found myself wondering how long it would take before someone discovered it.If Tobias saw my body, how would he react? The thought had barely formed when my soul suddenly appeared beside him.At that moment, he was standing at Whitney's bedside, his expression gentle as he personally handed her both the antidote and the healing potion.Whitney drank them with a frown and pouted.
