Oscar Mathis…?

Could it really be him?

There’s been no news about him and then all of a sudden out of the shadow he appears after over a decade and more.

Oscar’s smile didn’t move me. If anything, it made the air in the room feel thinner.

“And what proof do you have that you are the long dead Oscar?”

He chuckled. “I have to say that piece of information is very inaccurate, because as you see I am not dead.”

That didn’t answer my question. He didn’t look to be trying to be sneaky but still it didn't make any sense.

“Who exactly are you?”

He took another sip of the glass of wine at the top of the counter. Once the liquid drowned into his mouth he cleared his throat.

“Do you really think just anyone can reach you as precisely as I did? I am not just anyone Jace.” I was about to condemn his bullshit when he flashed a dagger tattoo on his neck.

My breath seized.

I knew that tattoo anywhere. Only because it was the last thing I remember from the night my parents abandoned me those years ag

Kamara The moment the meeting ended, I practically escaped the studio. My skin still felt hot from everything Brian said earlier, and my chest was tight with that kind of humiliation you can physically feel.I just wanted to go home. Or disappear. Either one was fine. When I reached the curb and opened the car door, I was surprised yet relieved to see Jace at the driver’s seat.I climbed in expecting the car to move the moment I closed the door but a few minutes later and still nothing.“Hey—“ I started but words died in my throat when I caught his eyes staring back at me through the rear-view mirror. If one could somehow stare into a person's soul just from one stare then that was what he was doing.I unlocked my phone, scrolling through everything, anything to act like I wasn’t spiraling over eye contact. The engine finally hummed to life.I bit the inside of my cheek, trying to convince myself I imagined it. That he wasn’t really looking at me or maybe he was checking the mirror f

Kamara “No—Brian, wait, it’s not what it seems,” I blurted, waving my hands uselessly in the air like that would magically erase the half-naked man behind me.He looked dumbfounded and yet disgusted.I felt heat crawl up my neck. “I wasn’t—I didn’t—this isn’t—”My voice tripped over itself, doing absolutely nothing to help my case.Behind me, Jace shifted. He hadn’t said a word but I could bet anything that he had that smug grin on his face. From the corner of my eye, I could already see his lazy stance, leaning against the wall with no care in the world.I refused to look at him.Because if I looked at him, I’d combust. And if I combusted, I’d die.And if I died, this would STILL be embarrassing.“Brian, seriously, I can explain,” I tried again, stepping forward. His jaw tightened. His eyes dragged over the scene behind me, Jace’s open shirt, the undone buttons, the casual smirk that said he wasn’t bothered at all.Brian inhaled sharply.“I’m sorry if I… interrupted any of this.”Th

KamaraBy late afternoon, I had finished packing up the scattered art supplies and the preparations, all while still trying to avoid Brian which was even more difficult because we were a pair.I left the room supply room once everyone had cleared out, brushes cleaned, paint tubes capped and all the stuff we would supposedly use for the event. Today, I managed to paint something that wasn’t an absolute disaster, it felt good or at most an improvement.Valerie had left for her own team hours ago, promising to “check in later,” which really meant she was waiting for updates about an idea I refused to explore. I didn’t give her any, because there was none to give.To her it was Brian, to me, someone completely different but I wasn’t about to tell her now. After all, it was just a pointless experiment.Meanwhile, when I got back to my apartment, Jace still hadn’t shown up.Three days straight and there were no signs of him. And despite telling myself it didn’t matter, even repeating it

Kamara The brush slipped from my fingers and hit the floor with a soft clatter. But even that barely pulled me back to the present.I blinked, glancing around my room. It was a mess of paints, brushes and half-painted canvas. My eyes stopped at the cardboard in front of me. I had been trying to reconnect with the artist in me ever since I got back from college but instead my mind continued to wander to something I knew wasn’t supposed to bother me as much as it did.I bent, picking the brush again then without thinking I groaned.“Who am I kidding? This isn’t working.” Valerie, who had been in the room for over an hour but I had only come to remember a few minutes ago, spoke startling me.“What’s going on Kam?” she walked over to look at the disaster I had yet again painted.“Yikes.” She met the frustrated look on my face. “I mean it’s not that…bad.”I rolled my eyes, stepping away from whatever it was. “I think I need to do something else?” I made my way out of the room.“What els

JaceI hadn’t slept. Not because of the flight, or the constant phone calls, or the weight of all the responsibility that never seemed to leave my shoulders. No, what kept me awake was the sound of Mr. Mann’s voice in that hospital room.In all twenty-four years I’d known him, had never once raised his voice at me, but yesterday, he did because of her.I closed my eyes, leaning back against the cold airplane seat, his words replaying like they were carved deep into my skull. They threaded themselves through every breath, every heartbeat, every second the plane vibrated beneath me.“Get her out.”His voice had been hoarse, strained, thin in a way that twisted something in my chest.I’d known him strong and always seeming but have everything under control but all I could see instead was weakness. He was barely able to breathe between sentences after she’d left. And then he said the one thing I never thought I would hear a father say about his own daughter.“She can’t come back here. She
