Elouera

The splintering wood outside my door didn't herald Stirling's breach.

Through the narrow, suffocating dark of the wardrobe's secret escape panel, I had dragged my burning body into the stone arteries of the palace, leaving the frantic pounding behind. But the palace was a labyrinth of teeth, and I was bleeding scent with every gasping breath I took.

The accelerant Holden had forced down my throat was a wildfire in my blood. Every muscle in my legs trembled violently as I stumbled through the abandoned east gallery, clutching my unravelling linen bindings against my crushed ribs. The sweet, heavy stench of wild honey and rain was radiating off my skin in waves, drowning out the damp mold of the stone walls.

I just needed to reach the lower catacombs. Just ten more yards to the hidden iron grate behind the tapestries.

A heavy hand clamped over my shoulder, the sheer force of it spinning me around and slamming my back brutally against the cold stone wall.

The breath exploded from my lungs in a ragged gasp. My head cracked against the granite, sending sharp pinpricks of white light dancing across my vision. Before I could draw a breath to scream, a massive, leather clad forearm pressed flush against my throat, trapping me solid.

Callan.

He didn't look like the disciplined Crown Prince. He looked entirely untamed. His icy blue eyes were wild, bloodshot, and dilated so wide the irises were mere slivers of blue rimming pure black pupils. His heavy jaw was set, a muscle leaping violently beneath his pale skin, and his chest heaved against his dark military tunic.

"I found you," Callan rasped.

The sound was barely human, a low, grinding vibration that rattled straight through the bones of my neck. The air around us instantly turned frigid, heavy with the suffocating, razor-sharp scent of cracking glaciers and raw leather. His dominant Alpha biology was flaring out of control, slamming into my fever-wracked frame like a physical blow.

"Callan..." I choked out, my fingers clawing uselessly at the thick leather of his sleeve. "Let... go..."

"Shut up!" he roared, leaning his full weight into my throat.

The stone behind my head felt like ice, but Callan was radiating a terrifying, suffocating heat. He leaned closer, his face inches from mine, his flared nostrils drawing in a deep, desperate breath of the air right above my collarbone.

I saw the exact moment my Omega scent hit his system. His eyes rolled back for a fraction of a second, his grip tightening until my vision began to darken at the edges.

"What are you doing to me?" Callan snarled, his voice cracking with a terrifying, unhinged fury. He pulled back just enough to let a thin sliver of air hit my lungs, but his forearm stayed pinned to my collarbone, trapping me like an animal. "What kind of filthy, dark witchcraft are you using, Elian?"

"I'm not... doing anything," I choked out, tears of pure agony and suffocating heat stinging my eyes. "Get... off me..."

“You’re my brother!” Callan shouted right in my face. His spit hit my cheek. He punched the stone wall beside my head, and the loud bang echoed through the empty hallway. Dust fell onto my hair.

“You’re weak. You’re useless. I’ve hated you since the day you were born! I watched you hide in corners while our mother destroyed this empire. And every time I looked at you, I hated myself for feeling disgusted by you!”

He took another ragged, shaking breath, his lips brushing the rapid, erratic pulse leaping in my throat. He let out a low, tortured groan, his forehead dropping heavily against the stone right next to my head.

"So why can't I stop?" Callan whispered, the fury in his voice turning into something infinitely darker, a desperate, sick humiliation that made my stomach twist into knots. "Why haven't I slept in three days? Why do I wake up in the middle of the night with my blood on fire, ready to murder every guard in the barracks just because they looked in the direction of your chambers?"

He was fighting his own biology with everything he had. His mind was so deeply warped by the imperial court, so thoroughly conditioned to see "Prince Elian" as a weak male beta, that his Alpha instincts were tearing him apart from the inside out. His soul recognized my Omega. His eyes saw a rival he was supposed to hate. And the resulting war inside his chest was turning him into a monster.

"Callan, please," I sobbed, my fevered skin burning everywhere his body pressed against mine. "You're sick... the drugs.

"I am not sick!" he roared, snapping his head up. His blue eyes burned with a terrifying, lethal madness. "You did this to me. You put something in my head. Ever since I ripped your shirt off in the sickroom, ever since I smelled whatever rot you're hiding under those bandages, I can't think. I can't rule. I can't breathe without wanting to tear you apart!"

He shifted his grip, his massive, calloused hand moving from my neck to clamp violently around my chin, forcing my face upward. His thumb dug brutally into my cheek, right over the jagged cut Jace had bled for hours ago.

"I am going to end it," Callan rasped, his face descending toward mine, his eyes locked onto my lips with a sick, possessive hunger that made my soul recoil. "I am going to break this spell. I'm going to take whatever it is you're hiding, and then I'm going to throw your broken body off the North Tower myself."

"Callan, don't!" I screamed, twisting my head frantically, but his grip was a vise.

His mouth was less than an inch from mine, his icy, suffocating Alpha scent completely wrapping around my windpipe, dousing the wild honey in a terrifying frost. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing myself for the violation, my nails digging into his wrist until I drew blood.

The heavy, iron bound doors at the far end of the gallery didn't just swing open; they were violently thrown back against the stone walls with a deafening crash that echoed like thunder.

Callan froze, his lips hovering a breath away from mine. He didn't let go of my jaw, but his head snapped toward the entrance, a feral, territorial snarl tearing from his throat.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the moonlight pouring through the stained glass, was Stirling Vance.

His velvet doublet was gone. His dark hair was wildly disheveled, his clothes reeking of crushed cedar, woodsmoke, and the scorched iron of my broken door handle. In his right hand, he held an unsheathed longsword, the steel glinting silver in the dim light.

Stirling didn't look at me. His striking green eyes were fixed entirely on Callan's hand clamped around my face.

"Take your hand off him, Callan," Stirling said. His voice wasn't loud. “A low, scary sound came from him. that carried a promise of absolute, merciless slaughter. "Or I will sever your arm at the shoulder."

Stirling Vance I had always believed I was a sensible man living in a kingdom full of mad dogs. Callan ruled through his royal status and brutal behavior, while Jace acted like a weapon that had been trained to kill without thinking. But I was different. I thought things through before making a move. Every lord, every agreement, and every betrayal was something I studied carefully until I found a way to use it to my advantage. When I first discovered the truth about the weak, sickly Second Prince, everything changed. I studied the security footage and slowly put the pieces together. Prince Elian wasn’t a boy at all. He was an Omega girl hiding the bloodline of the lost Sunfall family. To me, Elouera was the perfect weapon. She was exactly what I needed to bring down the Empress and protect the Northern House for the next hundred years. I told myself I was only interested in her because of her intelligence. I told myself I admired the brilliant, dangerous mind hidden behind that h

Elouera The iron gate crashed down behind us, leaving us trapped in complete darkness inside the underground archive. Outside the doors, I could still hear the distant sounds of crossbow bolts hitting stone and Callan’s guards shouting in panic. But their voices soon faded until everything became frighteningly quiet. The emergency lockdown had been activated. Thick iron bars had dropped from the central control tower, sealing us forty feet beneath the High Council chamber. We were trapped in a small, windowless stone room, barely twelve feet long and twelve feet wide. Rotting books, cedar shelves, and ancient papers filled the space. The only light came from a single candle burning weakly on a dusty reading desk in the corner. And there was barely any air to breathe. I stumbled backward until my back hit the cold, damp iron door. My chest rose and fell as I struggled to catch my breath. Every breath tasted of dust, metal, and cold sweat. My hands shook uncontrollably as I gra

Elouera The tall stained glass dome above the High Council chamber didn’t simply break. It shattered completely, sending sharp pieces of glass and lead raining down onto the marble floor like a deadly storm. Vane’s mercenaries had attached a heavy iron grappling hook to the stone platform. The chains groaned under its weight, but the expected group of Black Cell mercenaries never came down. Instead, Vane’s armored figure disappeared into the shadows among the high roof beams, hidden by the thick cloud of glass dust and smoke. It had all been planned. Vane had used himself as a distraction to frighten the remaining guards and throw them into complete panic. In the middle of the huge chamber, everything seemed to slow down. The silence and tension became almost unbearable. I moved back into the deep shadows of a marble pillar near the eastern entrance. The high lace collar of my velvet tunic felt like hot iron against my neck. Beneath it, the golden lines of my mark were glowing

Crown Prince Callan The huge alarm bell at the top of the palace continued ringing. Its loud, steady sound shook the marble floor beneath my boots. CLANG. CLANG. CLANG. Around us, the High Council chamber was quickly emptying. Lords shouted in fear while the sound of clashing weapons filled the hall. Captains barked orders, rushing their soldiers toward the western gates to fight the rebel army that I had made them believe was coming from the Outback pass. The air was filled with fear, the smell of burning candle grease, and the sharp, metallic scent of freshly drawn swords. On the raised platform, my mother stood beside her golden throne. Her silver-threaded gown remained perfectly neat, but her eyes burned with uncontrollable anger. I had not seen her this furious since the northern purges thirty years ago. “Callan!” Empress Cynthia’s voice cut through the noise. She hurried down the marble steps, her sharp heels clicking angrily against the stone. She stopped just three ste

Elouera My heart beat increased, but I kept my face calm and unreadable, still pretending to be the sickly prince. Across the huge, candlelit High Council chamber, Pip’s hand shook as she placed her empty glass on a tray covered with velvet. For a brief moment, her eyes met mine. Her face was turning red, and cold sweat had begun to form on her forehead. The double dose of concentrated Catalyst-7—the deadly poison meant for me was already taking effect in her body. She had no idea what she had swallowed. She probably thought the pills were ordinary medicine for a headache, left behind on the sofa. Ten minutes. That was all the time we might have. If the full dose took effect, Pip’s suppressed Omega nature would suddenly erupt right there on the lower floor of the gallery. Two hundred Alphas were already on edge after the fires the previous night. Their tempers were short, and they were hungry for blood. If Pip lost control and released her Omega pheromones, the Alphas could

Elouera The cold morning mist drifted in from the courtyard through the tall gothic archways. It carried the sharp smell of damp ash and burnt wood from the lower wing. Inside the private room beside the High Council chamber, the silence felt heavy and uncomfortable. I sat hunched on the edge of a velvet sofa, making myself look weak and sick, just like the fragile Second Prince everyone believed I was. Jace stood on my left, his large body blocking the way like a solid wall. Stirling stood on my right, his broad shoulders straight as he leaned against a marble pillar. Their strong Alpha scents surrounded me completely. The sharp smell of cedar mixed with wet earth, icy frost, and the powerful scent of lightning. Their scents covered mine so well that no one could detect my true Omega nature. To any lord who passed by, I was nothing more than a weak, dying prince being protected by two dangerous men. Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors at the end of the room began to open. Clic
