Elouera

I only survived Callan finding out the truth at the banquet because I got lucky. When his hand tightened around my waist and his eyes widened after catching the scent from my failing suppressants, I acted quickly. I drove my elbow backward and knocked a servant’s silver tray onto myself.

The hot vinegar and pickled eels spilled all over my chest. The smell was awful. It was strong enough to cover the faint smell of wild honey on my skin. Callan immediately let go of me with a look of disgust.

I didn’t wait.

I quickly moved away from him, trying not to show how badly my ribs hurt. Thankfully, it worked. I survived the night. But after that, the palace no longer felt safe. The walls seemed to close in on me every time I walked through the halls. The next afternoon, I went to the glass conservatory.

It was hot inside, almost too hot. I only went there because I wanted somewhere quiet to rest my bruised ribs. I thought I would be alone, but I had been wrong.

Duke Stirling Vance was sitting at a small iron table in the middle of the room. A chessboard sat in front of him, with black and white pieces spread across it. The sunlight coming through the glass fell directly on him.

I stopped when I saw him.

He looked up as my boots made a crunching sound against the gravel. He wasn’t smiling this time. His green eyes were fixed on me.

“Sit, Elian.”

I lowered my head and pulled my shoulders in.

“D-Duke Vance, I didn’t mean to disturb you. I’ll leave.”

“I said sit.”

I froze.

There was something in his voice that told me he wasn’t going to ask again. The smell of cedar and smoke filled the conservatory. It mixed with the smell of the orchids around us. I knew what Stirling was doing. His Alpha scent was getting stronger.

My body reacted before I could stop it. My knees felt weak, and every part of me wanted to lower my head and expose my neck.

I hated it.

I forced myself to keep walking until I reached the chair opposite him.

“White or black?” Stirling asked.

He leaned back in his chair. His white shirt had the sleeves rolled up, showing his arms. “I… I’m not very good at chess,” I said quietly.

“I’ll take black, then.”

He touched one of the black pieces. “It suits my mood.” I looked at him.

“My uncle’s soldiers in the north are in trouble, Elian. Two more supply lines were attacked this morning. Someone is giving the rebels our patrol routes.”

My heart jumped.

I quickly made my face look worried. “That’s terrible.”

“It is.”

He moved a black pawn. “Your turn.” I reached for one of the white pawns and moved it forward. It was a weak move. Exactly what I wanted him to think. For the next hour, Stirling slowly took my pieces.

He didn’t rush.

Every time he captured one of my knights or bishops, he looked pleased with himself. “You retreat too much,” he said. He moved his knight and trapped my queen.

As he pulled his hand back, his fingers brushed against my wrist. I quickly pulled away. His eyes moved to my face. “You give up your strongest pieces just to survive another turn,” he said. “You make it too easy for me.”

“I told you I wasn’t good at chess.”

“Check.”

He moved his bishop. I stared at the board. Then I moved my king into the corner. It looked like a stupid mistake. Stirling smiled.

“Checkmate.”

He moved his rook into place. “You lose, little prince.” He leaned closer. “You always lose.” I lowered my head and let a tear fall. Then I stood up quickly, knocking the chair against the floor.

I didn’t say anything.

I simply turned and ran out of the conservatory. I kept my hand against my ribs as I made my way back to my room. I wanted him to think I was frightened. I wanted him to think I was weak. But the moment my bedroom door closed behind me, I stopped pretending.

I wiped the tear from my face. Stirling was smart. But he was too confident. He thought we had only been playing chess. He didn’t know that I had been using the board for something else. I looked back at the pieces in my mind.

I had allowed him to take them one by one. I had placed my remaining pieces in a certain pattern. From above, they formed the shape of the Silver Peaks. It was actually a map. And when Stirling moved his rook to the final square, he had unknowingly placed it over the exact location of his uncle’s hidden armory in the north.

The same armory I had ordered Kael to destroy two days ago. Stirling didn’t know it yet. But he would soon. At sunset, the military report would arrive. When he saw the location of the destroyed armory, he would remember the chessboard.

Then he would understand. I hadn’t lost the game. I had used it to send him a message. I walked to the window and looked down at the courtyard. I knew I had to leave, and I had to do it quickly. The clock tower began to ring.

One.

Two.

Three.

The gates opened below. A rider covered in dust rushed into the courtyard. He was carrying a sealed black case. It had to be the military report. My heart started beating faster. I turned away from the window and reached for my cloak.

Then

Bang!

The door of my room shook. Before I could move, the heavy wooden door burst open. The lock tore away from the wall, and the door crashed against the other side.

I froze.

Stirling stood in the doorway.

He wasn’t smiling anymore. His shirt was soaked with sweat, and his chest was rising and falling quickly. His green eyes were fixed on me. In his hand, he held the white King from the chessboard.

“You.”

His voice was quiet. He stepped into the room.

“It was you.”

Stirling Vance I had always believed I was a sensible man living in a kingdom full of mad dogs. Callan ruled through his royal status and brutal behavior, while Jace acted like a weapon that had been trained to kill without thinking. But I was different. I thought things through before making a move. Every lord, every agreement, and every betrayal was something I studied carefully until I found a way to use it to my advantage. When I first discovered the truth about the weak, sickly Second Prince, everything changed. I studied the security footage and slowly put the pieces together. Prince Elian wasn’t a boy at all. He was an Omega girl hiding the bloodline of the lost Sunfall family. To me, Elouera was the perfect weapon. She was exactly what I needed to bring down the Empress and protect the Northern House for the next hundred years. I told myself I was only interested in her because of her intelligence. I told myself I admired the brilliant, dangerous mind hidden behind that h

Elouera The iron gate crashed down behind us, leaving us trapped in complete darkness inside the underground archive. Outside the doors, I could still hear the distant sounds of crossbow bolts hitting stone and Callan’s guards shouting in panic. But their voices soon faded until everything became frighteningly quiet. The emergency lockdown had been activated. Thick iron bars had dropped from the central control tower, sealing us forty feet beneath the High Council chamber. We were trapped in a small, windowless stone room, barely twelve feet long and twelve feet wide. Rotting books, cedar shelves, and ancient papers filled the space. The only light came from a single candle burning weakly on a dusty reading desk in the corner. And there was barely any air to breathe. I stumbled backward until my back hit the cold, damp iron door. My chest rose and fell as I struggled to catch my breath. Every breath tasted of dust, metal, and cold sweat. My hands shook uncontrollably as I gra

Elouera The tall stained glass dome above the High Council chamber didn’t simply break. It shattered completely, sending sharp pieces of glass and lead raining down onto the marble floor like a deadly storm. Vane’s mercenaries had attached a heavy iron grappling hook to the stone platform. The chains groaned under its weight, but the expected group of Black Cell mercenaries never came down. Instead, Vane’s armored figure disappeared into the shadows among the high roof beams, hidden by the thick cloud of glass dust and smoke. It had all been planned. Vane had used himself as a distraction to frighten the remaining guards and throw them into complete panic. In the middle of the huge chamber, everything seemed to slow down. The silence and tension became almost unbearable. I moved back into the deep shadows of a marble pillar near the eastern entrance. The high lace collar of my velvet tunic felt like hot iron against my neck. Beneath it, the golden lines of my mark were glowing

Crown Prince Callan The huge alarm bell at the top of the palace continued ringing. Its loud, steady sound shook the marble floor beneath my boots. CLANG. CLANG. CLANG. Around us, the High Council chamber was quickly emptying. Lords shouted in fear while the sound of clashing weapons filled the hall. Captains barked orders, rushing their soldiers toward the western gates to fight the rebel army that I had made them believe was coming from the Outback pass. The air was filled with fear, the smell of burning candle grease, and the sharp, metallic scent of freshly drawn swords. On the raised platform, my mother stood beside her golden throne. Her silver-threaded gown remained perfectly neat, but her eyes burned with uncontrollable anger. I had not seen her this furious since the northern purges thirty years ago. “Callan!” Empress Cynthia’s voice cut through the noise. She hurried down the marble steps, her sharp heels clicking angrily against the stone. She stopped just three ste

Elouera My heart beat increased, but I kept my face calm and unreadable, still pretending to be the sickly prince. Across the huge, candlelit High Council chamber, Pip’s hand shook as she placed her empty glass on a tray covered with velvet. For a brief moment, her eyes met mine. Her face was turning red, and cold sweat had begun to form on her forehead. The double dose of concentrated Catalyst-7—the deadly poison meant for me was already taking effect in her body. She had no idea what she had swallowed. She probably thought the pills were ordinary medicine for a headache, left behind on the sofa. Ten minutes. That was all the time we might have. If the full dose took effect, Pip’s suppressed Omega nature would suddenly erupt right there on the lower floor of the gallery. Two hundred Alphas were already on edge after the fires the previous night. Their tempers were short, and they were hungry for blood. If Pip lost control and released her Omega pheromones, the Alphas could

  • QUEENS DO NOT BEG FOR THRONES    Chapter 60

Elouera The cold morning mist drifted in from the courtyard through the tall gothic archways. It carried the sharp smell of damp ash and burnt wood from the lower wing. Inside the private room beside the High Council chamber, the silence felt heavy and uncomfortable. I sat hunched on the edge of a velvet sofa, making myself look weak and sick, just like the fragile Second Prince everyone believed I was. Jace stood on my left, his large body blocking the way like a solid wall. Stirling stood on my right, his broad shoulders straight as he leaned against a marble pillar. Their strong Alpha scents surrounded me completely. The sharp smell of cedar mixed with wet earth, icy frost, and the powerful scent of lightning. Their scents covered mine so well that no one could detect my true Omega nature. To any lord who passed by, I was nothing more than a weak, dying prince being protected by two dangerous men. Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors at the end of the room began to open. Clic
