Commander Jace Corowa

I have tracked ruthless warlords through blinding sandstorms and hunted feral assassins across the bleeding edge of the Outback. I know how a killer breathes. I know how a liar walks.

But the most dangerous puzzle I had ever encountered was currently on the limestone wall of the western corridor, shaking like a beaten dog.

I stood on the upper level, completely concealed by the shadows, watching Prince Elian.

Ten minutes ago, I was standing outside the prince’s chambers. I heard Duke Vance break through the heavy oak door. Then came the raw, furious sound of Stirling’s voice. I pulled out my hunting blade, ready to put the Duke in the ground if I had to. He was my only lead to the shadow broker, and I wasn’t about to let him die before I got answers.

But I didn’t have to. A breathless royal messenger showed up and pulled Stirling away to deal with the ashes of his uncle's northern armory. As soon as the Duke turned his back, Elian took his chance and slipped out through the servants’ exit.

Now, looking down at the prince, my jaw tightened.

Elian walked with that same pathetic slump. His shoulders were hunched, his steps uneven, and his head hung low. He looked weak enough to fool anyone.

But I knew better.

Three nights ago, I had cornered him in the freezing catacombs. I had smelled the wild honey and rain on his skin. There was no mistaking it.He was an Omega.

I knew the truth. Or, at least half of it.

Down below, the heavy kitchen doors opened, and a young scullery boy, barely twelve, hurried out with a tall stack of iron candelabras in his arms. The pile was far too heavy for him, blocking most of his view as he struggled to carry it.

He was moving too fast, and Elian was right in his way. I leaned over the stone railing, watching closely. The boy’s worn leather shoe caught on a raised stone. He stumbled forward, and the heavy stack of iron candelabras began to tip with him.

For one terrifying second, it looked like the whole thing was going to fall straight onto his head. The reaction I expected from Elian was a terrified flinch. A scream. A scramble backward to avoid the crushing metal.

Instead, for a fraction of a second, the weak prince vanished.

Elian didn’t even flinch.

His feet moved apart as he dropped into a steady stance. One hand shot out and caught the falling iron base before it could hit the boy. At the same time, his other hand grabbed the boy by the collar and pulled him out of the way.

It was the absolute, ingrained muscle memory of an apex predator. The martial grace of a ghost.

I stopped breathing. My grip on the stone railing shattered a piece of the limestone.

Down in the corridor, Elian blinked. The raw, panicked realization of what he had just done hit him.

The mask slammed violently back into place.

Elian instantly dropped the candelabras. The heavy iron crashed against the stone floor with a deafening, metallic shriek. Elian threw his hands over his face, stumbling backward, letting his knees give out until he hit the floor. He curled into a tight, trembling ball, letting out a pathetic, high pitched whimper.

"Forgive me, Your Highness!" the terrified boy sobbed, dropping to his knees to gather the heavy iron.

I didn't wait. I took the stone steps of the mezzanine two at a time.

My boots hit the corridor floor with a heavy, deliberate thud. The heavy, crackling scent of ozone and incoming rain flooded the narrow hallway, thick with an Alpha dominance that demanded complete submission.

The scullery boy froze, looking up at me with wide eyes.

"Leave it," I ordered, my voice a low, rough rasp that scraped against the stone walls. "Get out."

The boy didn't hesitate. He scrambled up and bolted back through the kitchen doors.

I turned my attention to the trembling figure on the floor. Elian was pressing his back hard against the wall, his arms still wrapped protectively over his head, shivering violently. I stepped into his space, my combat boots stopping bare inches from his drawn up knees.

"P..please," Elian stuttered, his voice cracking perfectly. "I was just startled. The loud noise"

I reached down, my large, gloved hands wrapping around his slender wrists. I didn't rip his arms away forcefully; I pulled them down with a slow, immovable strength, pinning his hands to his chest.

Elian gasped, his dark eyes widening as he looked up at me. His chest rose and fell beneath the tight bindings.

He reeked of cheap vinegar. He'd clearly used it to cover the wild honey scent I'd noticed in the catacombs. But up close, the vinegar couldn't hide everything. His pulse was racing, and I could see the fear in his eyes.

"You startle easily," I murmured, staring directly into his panicked eyes.

"I do, Commander. I am sorry."

I slowly slid my right hand down his forearm, my bare thumb pressing directly over the racing pulse point of his left wrist. The wrist that had just deadened eighty pounds of falling iron without a single tremor.

"You're a remarkable liar, Elian," I whispered, the slow, burning tension between us pulling tighter until the air practically hummed.

I reached down with my free hand and pulled a thin, black metal knife from the sheath strapped to my thigh. My eyes dropped to the blade.

I knew that knife.

It was the same one the Shadow Broker had thrown into the wall in the catacombs when he was protecting his lieutenant..

Elian’s breathing stopped completely.

I pressed the flat, cold edge of the poisoned blade against the soft, flushed skin of his jawline, forcing his chin up.

“You caught that iron with a broken rib and didn’t even flinch,” I rasped, leaning closer, my lips almost brushing his ear. “So tell me, Your Highness… why does the blade the Weaver dropped fit those calluses on your fingers so perfectly?”

Stirling Vance I had always believed I was a sensible man living in a kingdom full of mad dogs. Callan ruled through his royal status and brutal behavior, while Jace acted like a weapon that had been trained to kill without thinking. But I was different. I thought things through before making a move. Every lord, every agreement, and every betrayal was something I studied carefully until I found a way to use it to my advantage. When I first discovered the truth about the weak, sickly Second Prince, everything changed. I studied the security footage and slowly put the pieces together. Prince Elian wasn’t a boy at all. He was an Omega girl hiding the bloodline of the lost Sunfall family. To me, Elouera was the perfect weapon. She was exactly what I needed to bring down the Empress and protect the Northern House for the next hundred years. I told myself I was only interested in her because of her intelligence. I told myself I admired the brilliant, dangerous mind hidden behind that h

Elouera The iron gate crashed down behind us, leaving us trapped in complete darkness inside the underground archive. Outside the doors, I could still hear the distant sounds of crossbow bolts hitting stone and Callan’s guards shouting in panic. But their voices soon faded until everything became frighteningly quiet. The emergency lockdown had been activated. Thick iron bars had dropped from the central control tower, sealing us forty feet beneath the High Council chamber. We were trapped in a small, windowless stone room, barely twelve feet long and twelve feet wide. Rotting books, cedar shelves, and ancient papers filled the space. The only light came from a single candle burning weakly on a dusty reading desk in the corner. And there was barely any air to breathe. I stumbled backward until my back hit the cold, damp iron door. My chest rose and fell as I struggled to catch my breath. Every breath tasted of dust, metal, and cold sweat. My hands shook uncontrollably as I gra

Elouera The tall stained glass dome above the High Council chamber didn’t simply break. It shattered completely, sending sharp pieces of glass and lead raining down onto the marble floor like a deadly storm. Vane’s mercenaries had attached a heavy iron grappling hook to the stone platform. The chains groaned under its weight, but the expected group of Black Cell mercenaries never came down. Instead, Vane’s armored figure disappeared into the shadows among the high roof beams, hidden by the thick cloud of glass dust and smoke. It had all been planned. Vane had used himself as a distraction to frighten the remaining guards and throw them into complete panic. In the middle of the huge chamber, everything seemed to slow down. The silence and tension became almost unbearable. I moved back into the deep shadows of a marble pillar near the eastern entrance. The high lace collar of my velvet tunic felt like hot iron against my neck. Beneath it, the golden lines of my mark were glowing

Crown Prince Callan The huge alarm bell at the top of the palace continued ringing. Its loud, steady sound shook the marble floor beneath my boots. CLANG. CLANG. CLANG. Around us, the High Council chamber was quickly emptying. Lords shouted in fear while the sound of clashing weapons filled the hall. Captains barked orders, rushing their soldiers toward the western gates to fight the rebel army that I had made them believe was coming from the Outback pass. The air was filled with fear, the smell of burning candle grease, and the sharp, metallic scent of freshly drawn swords. On the raised platform, my mother stood beside her golden throne. Her silver-threaded gown remained perfectly neat, but her eyes burned with uncontrollable anger. I had not seen her this furious since the northern purges thirty years ago. “Callan!” Empress Cynthia’s voice cut through the noise. She hurried down the marble steps, her sharp heels clicking angrily against the stone. She stopped just three ste

Elouera My heart beat increased, but I kept my face calm and unreadable, still pretending to be the sickly prince. Across the huge, candlelit High Council chamber, Pip’s hand shook as she placed her empty glass on a tray covered with velvet. For a brief moment, her eyes met mine. Her face was turning red, and cold sweat had begun to form on her forehead. The double dose of concentrated Catalyst-7—the deadly poison meant for me was already taking effect in her body. She had no idea what she had swallowed. She probably thought the pills were ordinary medicine for a headache, left behind on the sofa. Ten minutes. That was all the time we might have. If the full dose took effect, Pip’s suppressed Omega nature would suddenly erupt right there on the lower floor of the gallery. Two hundred Alphas were already on edge after the fires the previous night. Their tempers were short, and they were hungry for blood. If Pip lost control and released her Omega pheromones, the Alphas could

Elouera The cold morning mist drifted in from the courtyard through the tall gothic archways. It carried the sharp smell of damp ash and burnt wood from the lower wing. Inside the private room beside the High Council chamber, the silence felt heavy and uncomfortable. I sat hunched on the edge of a velvet sofa, making myself look weak and sick, just like the fragile Second Prince everyone believed I was. Jace stood on my left, his large body blocking the way like a solid wall. Stirling stood on my right, his broad shoulders straight as he leaned against a marble pillar. Their strong Alpha scents surrounded me completely. The sharp smell of cedar mixed with wet earth, icy frost, and the powerful scent of lightning. Their scents covered mine so well that no one could detect my true Omega nature. To any lord who passed by, I was nothing more than a weak, dying prince being protected by two dangerous men. Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors at the end of the room began to open. Clic
