The executive boardroom of Monroe Global felt less like a place of business and more like a high-tech courtroom. The long, seamless mahogany table stretched across the room, flanked on one side by Marcus Vance and a trio of stone-faced data analysts. On the other side sat Xavier Knight. He had stripped off his suit jacket, rolling the sleeves of his crisp white shirt up his forearms as he navigated a mountain of operational logistics data on his tablet.

For three grueling hours, Marc had put Xavier through a corporate meat grinder. They hadn't just reviewed the Knight Group’s real estate holdings; they had picked apart his entire eastern seaboard supply line, questioning every variable, every delay, and every projected metric.

Through it all, Xavier remained entirely composed. His alpha nature didn't buckle under the pressure. Instead, the intense scrutiny only sharpened his focus. He answered every cutting question with a low, gravelly authority, commanding the room even as he was being interrogated.

He was pitching for his life—or at least, the life of his project—completely unaware of the opaque, polarized glass mirror stretching across the wall to his left.

Behind that glass, hidden in the shadows of the private viewing suite, Selah Monroe sat in her recessed leather chair. A laptop rested on her thighs, her fingers flying across the keys as she monitored the live audio feed. She watched the way the muscles in Xavier’s forearms shifted as he gestured to a data point, the intense, unwavering heat in his dark eyes as he defended his expansion strategy.

He was brilliant under fire. It sent a sudden, traitorous spark of heat straight through her veins.

Selah pulled up her encrypted text line to Marc.

Ask him about the Q4 capacity redundancies, she typed, her eyes never leaving Xavier’s face through the glass. He’s assuming a stable market. Push him on a high-inflation scenario.

In the boardroom, Marc’s hidden earpiece chimed. He subtly tapped his pen against the table, reading the prompt on his hidden monitor.

"Your projections look clean on paper, Mr. Knight," Marc said, leaning forward, matching Xavier’s intense energy. "But you're assuming a stable economy. What happens to your integration if we hit a high-inflation scenario in Q4? If fuel prices spike by fifteen percent, your current redundancy model collapses."

Xavier didn't even pause. He leaned forward, locking eyes with Marc. "It doesn't collapse because I didn't build it on a standard domestic model. If fuel spikes, our automated routing immediately switches our secondary distribution to our rail partners in the tri-state area. We lose four hours in transit, but we save twelve percent in overhead. I’ve already secured the conditional right-of-way contracts for those tracks."

Marc stared at him for a beat, then slowly leaned back in his chair. In his ear, Selah’s voice murmured, cool and definitive. "That's enough, Marc. He's locked it down. Approve the integration."

Marc offered a faint, respectful smile. "Well, Mr. Knight. It seems your strategy is as bulletproof as you claim. My Chief Executive has been auditing this entire session from our secure line, and they have just authorized the probationary contract."

Xavier let out a slow, silent breath as the heavy tension in the room finally subsided. "I appreciate the thoroughness, Mr. Vance. When can we expect the final signing with the CEO?"

"The contract is digitally authorized as of now," Marc said, standing up and closing his folder. "Our CEO prefers to remain out of the operational weeds once a client has proven their worth. You'll be dealing directly with me for the system integration."

Xavier stood up, rolling his sleeves back down and fastening his cuffs. "A bit unconventional, but given the quality of your infrastructure, I won't complain. I look forward to working with your team."

As Marc and the analysts began gathering their tablets, Xavier stepped away from the table, walking toward the far side of the room to grab his suit jacket from the coat rack. The rack was positioned right next to the private executive exit—the door that led directly into Selah’s viewing suite.

Xavier reached for his jacket, pulling it off the hanger. As he swung the heavy wool fabric over his shoulders, a sudden draft from the executive door’s ventilation system brushed past his face.

Xavier froze.

His chest tightened as a violently familiar sensation rushed over his senses. It was a scent. Rich, warm, and utterly intoxicating—a distinct blend of sweet vanilla and fresh, rain-slicked pavement.

It was her scent. The exact same fragrance that had filled his lungs in the monochromatic shadows of the art gallery just days ago. The same scent that had lingered on his skin long after she had disappeared into the dark.

Xavier’s head snapped toward the private executive door. His dark eyes narrowed, his alpha instincts instantly flaring as his heart hammered a sudden, frantic rhythm against his ribs. For a wild, chaotic second, the world seemed to stop.

Behind the polarized glass, Selah stopped breathing. She stood perfectly still, her heart leaping into her throat as she watched Xavier stare directly at the door separating them. Through the mirror, it looked like he was looking straight into her eyes.

"Something wrong, Mr. Knight?" Marc’s voice shattered the silence, drawing Xavier back to reality.

Xavier blinked, shaking his head slightly as he forced his posture to relax. He ran a hand over his jaw, letting out a low, self-deprecating breath. It was a massive multinational corporation. Millions of women wore high-end perfume. He was completely running on fumes and sleep deprivation, and his mind was clearly playing tricks on him, projecting his obsession with the rooftop girl onto a random scent in a corporate office.

"Nothing," Xavier said, his voice a low, gravelly hum as he adjusted his lapels. "Just thought I caught a familiar scent. Someone on your executive staff must have excellent taste in perfume."

Marc’s lips twitched, but he kept his face entirely unreadable. "I’ll be sure to pass along the compliment. Have a good day, Xavier."

"You too, Marc," Xavier said.

He turned and walked out of the boardroom, his strides long and purposeful. But as the elevator doors closed and shot him down toward the lobby, the phantom scent of vanilla and rain lingered in his mind. He wasn't thinking that she was connected to Monroe Global—that would be ridiculous for a girl his friends dismissed as a low-level coordinator. But as he looked out at the city skyline, he realized that no matter how hard he tried to focus on his empire, he couldn't get the mysterious escape artist out of his head.

Morning light broke through the sheer curtains of the master suite, painting the room in soft hues of gold and slate grey. Xavier sat on the edge of the oversized bed, his bare torso lean and lined with muscles, a steaming mug of black coffee resting in his hand. He had been awake since Marcus's three in the morning phone call. His gaze was fixed on Selah, who was sitting across from him in an silk armchair, her dark velvet robe drawn close, her eyes completely locked onto his. "Geneva," Selah said quietly, her voice smooth and deliberate. "So Julian wasn't the mastermind. He was just the local muscle playing with offshore credit lines." "He was an operative with ambition," Xavier agreed, setting his coffee down on the mahogany nightstand. He reached across the small distance between them, taking her right hand into his heavy palm. His thumb brushed over the polished surface promise ring resting on her finger. The weight of that ring was an anchor between them—not yet an engag

The glass-walled private lounge at the top of the Knight-Monroe tower overlooked the glittering city skyline. Rain streaked down the panoramic windows, reflecting the soft amber lights from the bar inside. By mid-afternoon, the news of Julian Drake’s sudden resignation from his corporate positions had circulated through the financial wires in a muted, carefully worded press release. To the public, it was an early retirement driven by personal investment shifts. To the inner circle, it was the quiet, absolute execution of an enemy who had tried to destroy them. Selah stood near the glass, a glass of sparkling water resting in her hands. The exhaustion of the past forty-eight hours still lingered in the tight set of her shoulders, but beneath it was an undeniable, grounding peace. Footsteps sounded behind her—heavy, measured, familiar. Xavier stepped up beside her, his tall frame blocking out the cold reflection in the glass. He didn't say anything at first. He simply reached out, h

SilkThe brownstone had quieted down as the midnight hour bled into three in the morning. In the tactical war room downstairs, the screens were still humming softly, running the automated sub-routines Damaris and Marcus had coded to freeze Julian’s secondary credit lines the second the Asian markets opened.Upstairs in the master suite, the storm outside had returned, a low, rumbling thunder shaking the heavy glass windows.Selah stood by the French doors leading to the balcony, her dark velvet robe tied loosely at her waist. She looked out over the rain-slicked city streets, her mind running through every possible counter-move Julian might make when the margin call hit his desk in four hours.A warm, heavy weight settled over her shoulders as a pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind.Xavier pulled her flush against his chest, his signature scent—sandalwood, rain, and distinct, expensive leather—wrapping around her instantly. He rested his chin against the side of he

The rain had stopped, leaving the night air outside the brownstone cold and crisp. Inside, the heavy oak dining room table had been converted into a tactical command site. Laptops sat open, their screens displaying decrypted bank ledgers, offshore shell company trees, and wire transfer routing numbers. Damaris sat with a warm mug in her hands, her face calm and focused for the first time in days. To her left, Marcus was leaning over the main monitor, his long fingers navigating through the financial records pulled from Pendleton's server. Xavier stood near the head of the table, his arms crossed over his chest, his dark eyes fixed on the name flashing at the top of the financial trail: DRAKE HOLDINGS INTL. "Julian was careful," Marcus said, his voice measured and dry. "He routed the two million dollars through three separate shell entities in Grand Cayman before it reached Pendleton's private account. To a standard regulatory audit, it looks like an anonymous consulting retainer

Arthur Pendleton’s face drained of color, his smug composure disintegrating in a fraction of a second. His gaze darted frantically from Damaris’s cold, unblinking eyes down to the glow of his laptop screen. "What did you do?" Pendleton breathed, his voice suddenly thin and strained. He reached out to slam the laptop lid shut, but his hands were shaking. "I didn't do anything, Arthur," Damaris said quietly, taking a step back and folding her arms across her chest with effortless poise. "You did. You executed unverified code on an unauthorized device outside of federal network protocols. The moment that drive mounted, your entire local network was mirrored. Every offshore bank transfer, every encrypted email with your financial backer, every illegal query you ran on me—it’s all sitting on our cloud servers right now." Pendleton lunged out of his chair, his chair skidding violently backward against the concrete wall. His eyes flared with a desperate, wild rage as he reached across the

The hum of the server racks on the thirty-second floor sounded like a low, predatory growl. Damaris’s fingers flew across her mechanical keyboard, a blurring rhythm of keystrokes that echoed off the glass walls. Her face was illuminated by the harsh blue glow of three separate monitors, each displaying cascading lines of complex, raw hexadecimal code.Three hours, forty-eight minutes."Bypass complete," Damaris whispered, her voice tight but entirely steady now. The fear that had paralyzed her hours ago had hardened into absolute precision. "The payload is wrapped. To any standard Federal Regulatory Commission diagnostic scanner, this looks like the master routing key to our international logistics servers. But the second he mounts the directory, the sub-routine executes in the background. It will clone his entire drive, mirror his local network traffic, and dump it straight into a secure cloud link.""And the trace?" Marcus asked, standing just behind her shoulder. His eyes were lock
