Sera sat in the campus library the next afternoon, her laptop open in front of her. The umbrella incident was still two chapters away, but the overpass was already gnawing at the edges of her focus. She needed a name; she needed something to hold onto besides tired eyes and a voice that wouldn't leave her alone.

"Pixy, can you help me search the student database?” she typed into her notes more out of habit than necessity.

The second call came less than a day later, no warning this time, Crowe's voice simply filling the communications room again as though he'd never fully disconnected in the first place, only paused to let his previous revelation properly settle."I find I'm not quite finished being honest with you," he said, without preamble. "I hope you'll indulge me a little longer, Miss Ashford. I promise this next piece matters considerably more than the last.""I'm not sure I trust anything you're about to say," Sera answered, though she gestured for Marcus to keep the channel open regardless."That's reasonable," Crowe said. "Trust me or don't. The information remains true either way, and I suspect you'd rather have it than not, whatever your feelings about the source."Lucien had gone very still beside her, and something in his stillness made Sera's chest tighten before Crowe had said another word."Lucien," Crowe continued, his voice carrying that same warm, unhurried fondness he'd used discuss

The message came through the coalition's secure channel two days after the meeting, patched directly into the frequency Julian's network used, which meant Crowe had access to systems Sera had believed were secure—one more small, unsettling reminder of how much further his reach extended than any of them fully understood."This is unauthorized use of a coalition channel," Marcus said, staring at the console as the transmission requested connection. "Sera, we should refuse this outright.""If he wanted to hurt us, he wouldn't need to talk first," Sera said, though her pulse had already quickened. "Patch it through."Crowe's voice filled the small communications room, as warm and unhurried as it had been across his tea table days before, though something in it now carried a different weight, as though he'd decided the time for careful diplomacy had passed and something more direct was finally warranted."Miss Ashford. I hope I'm not interrupting anything critical.""You are, actually. Wh

The letter arrived the same way the first one had, folded and weighted at the gate, though this time no guard reported footprints or figures in the dark—only the letter itself, waiting, as though it had simply appeared there through the same patient, unhurried means Crowe seemed to prefer for everything he touched.Sera read it alone in her quarters before bringing it to the others, the familiar, controlled script settling cold in her chest despite everything they'd built in the weeks since their forces had assembled.*Miss Ashford,**I've watched your coalition grow with considerable interest. Impressive, truthfully, though I confess I expected nothing less from you at this point. I think it's time we spoke once more, before either of us commits to a course of action that proves difficult to walk back from.**I propose the same terms as before. Neutral ground, my estate, an honest conversation about an outcome that benefits everyone involved. I understand your hesitation, given how o

It took three days of careful, sometimes difficult persuasion before Julian finally agreed to wait, and even then, Sera suspected it was less her argument that convinced him and more the sheer scale of what she proposed building around him instead of leaving him to face it alone."We don't do a second small breach," she told him over the radio, laying out the plan she'd spent those three days assembling. "We do this properly, once, with everything the coalition has. Not just an infiltration team slipping through a maintenance gap. A real operation. Enough force that whatever we find, we're not scrambling to survive the retreat the way we were last time.""That's a significant escalation," Julian said carefully."It's the escalation this deserves. You've waited seven years for this answer, Julian. A few more weeks to make sure we actually reach it safely isn't going to undo that patience. Walking in unprepared and dying before you find her would."He'd agreed, eventually, and the weeks

The anger took two days to fully surface, and when it finally did, it arrived nothing like the quiet grief Daisy had carried through the file's initial revelation.Sera found her in the main hall, alone, the children still asleep, standing over the small collection of books she'd built her makeshift school around, her hands shaking with a fury that looked entirely foreign on her usually gentle face."Daisy?""I keep thinking about the other kids," Daisy said, not turning around. "The ones who were there with me. The ones I made friends with, the ones that apparently ruined his little experiment because I cared about them instead of turning into whatever cold, detached thing he wanted." Her voice shook. "Did he erase their memories too? Did he decide they were unsuccessful and just discard them the same way, and are they out there somewhere right now, not even knowing what was taken from them?""I don't know," Sera said honestly. "But we can try to find out."Daisy turned to face her f

Priya had been working on the last fragments of Daisy's file for nearly a week, the encryption around it proving denser and more deliberate than anything else in the archive, as though whoever had sealed it away had understood, even then, that it contained something worth protecting more carefully than the rest."I think I've got it," she said, catching Sera in the corridor outside the decryption room, her voice carrying an exhaustion that went beyond simple lack of sleep. "You should be there when I open it. Daisy too, if she's ready."Daisy was ready, or said she was, though Sera could see the tension in her shoulders as the three of them gathered around the terminal that evening, the small room lit only by the glow of the screen and a single lantern."Whatever it says," Daisy said quietly, "I need to hear it. All of it."Priya nodded and began the final decryption sequence, the last corrupted fragments assembling slowly into something readable, and Sera watched Daisy's face as the
