Chapter 5

Nilah's Pov

“Click.” I drawled slowly as I lowered my phone, the screen still glowing with the photo I’d just snapped of them entwined in the study. I stared at the image of Kendrick’s hands on Stephanie, the same hands that would eventually feed me poison, and a cold sneer curled my lips. I could expose them now and cause a scandal, but that was too merciful. I didn't just want them disgraced; I wanted them to lose everything they had killed me for.

I retreated to my room, and closed the door without locking it. A mistake on my part, but no matter what I did or how much I tried to keep it off my mind, I couldn't. My mind kept drifting back to the photo Asher had sent, the silver locket, the man with my eyes. In my previous life, I was just an orphan Omega who believed she was lucky just to be noticed and adopted into the pack by the council members and the acting Alpha back then. When I first came to the pack, I wasn't accepted by anyone. I was an Omega, and for an arrogant and prideful pack like this, Omega's were a stain to their reputation. So I was isolated and hated.

I stayed alone, within the confines of the greenhouse or my room, either growing plants or creating different kinds of medications. Soon after, I became well known but I was still isolated by the pack. And it was during that time that Kendrick reached out. I had been so pathetically grateful that I’d handed him my soul, my heart, my research, and his Alpha title on a silver platter. But it ended up in blood and pain for me.

So pathetic.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts, pulling me out of them.

"Mom? Are you awake?" The door creaked open, and Alex stepped in without waiting for my permission to enter. He was carrying a cup of warm milk. My heart skipped a beat, but not with motherly love. I remembered this. He had complained about me earlier, been scolded by Kendrick for "upsetting the talent," and was now here to play the part of the repentant son.

"I'm sorry for being mean earlier, Mom," Alex said, his voice small and rehearsed. He held the cup out. "I made you this milk so I hope you’ll drink this so I know you aren't mad anymore."

“Is that so?” I asked quietly.

Alex nodded frantically, “Yes. Look at my hands, I even got burned because I wanted to make you happy. Don't be angry at me or daddy and aunty Stephanie anymore, okay? We all love you.”

I looked into his eyes, the child I had stayed up nights nursing, the child I had loved more than myself. I searched for a flicker of genuine remorse, but all I saw was a chilling calculation that mirrored Kendrick’s.

"Just leave it on the table, Alex. I'll drink it later," I said, my voice empty. Come to think of it, in my previous life, it was after I began drinking this milk that my health began to fail. The coughing, the weakness... It all started here. I didn't want to believe a child could be so cruel, but I was no longer a fool.

"Drink it now? Please?" he pressed.

"I said later. Go to bed."

He stiffened, the mask of a sweet child slipping for a fraction of a second before he turned and left. As soon as the door clicked shut, I went to lock it myself and took a bottle. I slowly poured the milk into the bottle and hid it under my bed.

I had to take it to the lab for testing, I wanted to see if they had poisoned this milk and if they had, Alex might have intentionally given it to me. He was part of the people who wanted to kill me. With that thought in mind, I quickly drifted off into sleep, tired from the day's events.

The next morning, I quickly dressed up and walked to the living room, Stephanie was once again clinging to Kendrick’s arm. She pulled away reluctantly as I stepped out, her eyes flashing with a triumph she could barely hide.

"Nilah, good timing," Kendrick said, his voice smooth. "I’ve been thinking. Silver poisoning research is a heavy burden. Stephanie has actually found a rare herb in the northern woods that might act as a natural suppressor. I want her to join the company."

Stephanie smirked. "It could really help you meet the Council's deadline, Nilah. If you'll let me help."

In my past life, I would have been defensive, protecting my work. Now? I smiled. "Actually, that’s a wonderful idea. In fact, why don’t you take over the entire project, Stephanie? I’ve been feeling quite burnt out. I think I’ll take a short vacation."

The room went deathly silent. Kendrick’s eyes widened. "Take over... the entire project? Nilah, you’ve spent years on this."

"And clearly, Stephanie has a fresh perspective," I said, already turning towards the door. “I'm going to the office to hand over my work. I'll come back late.” I informed Kendrick.

"Wait, Nilah…” Kendrick started, stepping toward me, his face clouded with unease. He didn't like this. He liked me to be predictable, not indifferent. I didn't even look back.

**************

Two hours later, the test results of the milk came out. It was just as I thought. I had really started getting poisoned from the onset. Looking at the result, I let out a soft chuckle.

“None of them are good people.”

“Who are you talking about?” Sarah interrupted, walking into the office.

I turned around, “Just some irrelevant people.” I answered. A pause, but I continued. “Sarah, I'll be handing over my research work to Stephanie, the Beta’s daughter.”

“What? What do you mean?! You've been working on this for a long time. You can't just…!”

“I'm tired.” I said softly. “I'm really tired. I don't feel like doing anything anymore. I need to rest. So I'm taking a break, but I'll continue the research later, you don't need to worry.” But it won't be here, in this place. Before Sarah could say any other thing, I took off my coat and carried my bag. “I'm leaving. I've handed over my work for now. See you later, Sarah.”

“Somehow, it sounds like you're going far away, Nilah. But I don't blame you, even if you leave, no one here will blame you. I promise.”

I nodded and left the lab. I had a destination: the River Valley Land Auction. In my previous life, I had stayed home to care for a "sick" Alex while this auction took place. I later learned that a small plot near the Silver Moon border had been sold for a pittance, land that sat atop a hidden vein of soil perfect for growing rare medicinal herbs. It was the land I needed for my new life, far away from Kendrick. The auction house was a sprawling, opulent building in the pack’s center, a place where luxury and power changed hands. But as I reached the entrance, two guards crossed their arms blocking my path.

"Omegas aren't allowed at the high-tier auctions," one guard said, sniffing the air with a look of pure disgust. "Beat it, girl."

"I am Nilah, Kendrick's mate," I said, my voice ringing with a cold authority I never knew I possessed.

The guard let out a harsh bark of a laugh. He pointed toward the glittering lobby inside. "What are you saying? Lord Kendrick's mate is already inside, sweetheart. Don't go looking for trouble."

“Inside?” I repeated, tilting my head to the side. I instantly caught sight of Kendrick speaking to a bunch of people with Stephanie hanging around his arm. “Oh, I understand now. However, I have authority to enter this place. I am…”

“Well, well, well. Who do we have here? It's the infamous Nilah.” A female voice cooed out, her tone filled with arrogance and disgust. I knew that voice anywhere.

It was Vivian, Stephanie’s friend and one of the wolves who bullied me. I was already looking for a way to relieve my anger, but you brought yourself to my door. It's such a pity for you.

I clasped my hands together and gave her a closed eye smile. “Hello Vivian. Long time no see, I missed you so much.”

Nilah's Pov The line went dead. I stared at the blank screen for a moment before I raised my head. To my shock, I was in front of my house. When did I even get here? I sighed and walked into the house and when I stepped through the front door, I nearly collided with Kendrick. He wasn't alone. Stephanie was draped at his side, her hand resting possessively on his arm. Walking just ahead of them was Alex.In my past life, this sight would have triggered a wave of guilt, the feeling that I was failing as a wife and mother. But now, with my eyes wide open, I felt only disgust. I looked at Alex, then at Stephanie. The shape of their eyes, the specific curve of their smiles... How had I been so blind? The resemblance wasn't just a coincidence; it was biological."Nilah!" Kendrick’s voice was sharp with performative authority. "I’ve been calling you all afternoon. Why didn't you answer? I was worried sick." He stepped toward me. "I was busy in the lab, Kendrick," I replied. My voice was f

Nilah's Pov “You are the only living heir to the Moonlight Pack, Miss Nilah and we have been looking for you for a very long time."The words hit me like a physical blow. I froze, the lab phone nearly slipping from my numb fingers. "The Moonlight Pack? Did you just say..." I trailed off, my mind racing through every legend I’d ever heard. The Moonlight Pack was like the king of the northern territories, a mystical sanctuary people had spent decades trying to find. They were rumored to be blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, possessing healing abilities so potent they could purge silver from the blood with a mere touch."That’s impossible," I stammered, a hysterical laugh bubbling in my chest. "The Moonlight Pack is a myth. And even if it weren't... I’m an Omega, Asher. I have no power. My wolf is too weak to even shift.""You are an Omega because your wolf was suppressed for so many years," Asher countered, his voice dropping into a protective growl. "Your nature has been muffled by

Nilah's Pov A gasp tore out of my throat, sharp and jagged, like a blade. “Ah!” I bolted upright, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. “Hold on… My heart is beating?” The smell of antiseptic and blood was gone, replaced by the faint and comforting scent of my room and perfume. Warm sunlight spilled across the bedspread, forcing me to shield my eyes. For a long moment, I didn't move. I waited for the coughing fit, the metallic taste of blood, the heavy tiredness of my illness. It didn't come. My lungs expanded fully, pulling in sweet, clean air.I looked down at my hands. They were steady. The skin was tan and vibrant, not the translucent gray of a corpse."Goddess..." the word was breathless as it escaped my lips. I lunged for the phone on the nightstand and my thumb hit the home button, and I stared at the glowing numbers until they practically burned into my eyes. June 14th 2023. I died June 14th 2024. The date was showing one year ago. One full year before I was

Chapter 1 Nilah's Pov “Ack! Ack!” A cough hacked through my body, making me tremble from weakness. A tired breath escaped my lips as I looked around, feeling weaker than ever. The hospital room I was in smelled of antiseptic and the slow, creeping scent of my own body which was gradually decaying. For six months, this rare sickness I had, had been stripping the life from my bones. They said it only hit one in a hundred werewolves. I used to think I was just unlucky. One thing I also knew was that I was dying. One of the symptoms of my sickness was bleeding from three or more orifices. It was the last stage of the sickness, and a few minutes ago, I had bled from my mouth, eyes, nose and ears. Even till now, I could barely see, but it was still enough for me to see Kendrick, my mate and Alex, my son, one last time. I reached for my phone, my fingers trembling so violently I almost dropped it. It took me almost everything I had to control my fingers to move to the direction I wanted
