THE LAND

~SIENNA~

Fourteen missed calls.

I counted them over my second coffee, my phone lying face-up on the table, the screen lighting up and dying like a heartbeat.

Ethan had been served at his office at nine that morning. By nine-ten, he'd called me four times. By eleven, fourteen.

'This isn't funny, Sienna.'

'Call me.'

'Are you serious right now??'

'Mom says you've lost your mind.'

I read every one. I answered none.

Then I flipped the phone face down and pulled my laptop closer. He could be

THE COUNTDOWN~SIENNA~Mr. Pruitt called at nine in the morning."It's yours," he said, sounding almost disappointed not to have a better story to tell. "Other buyer withdrew his offer last night. No explanation. Just a call saying to let it go to you."I sat very still at the kitchen table, the phone pressed to my ear, waiting for the catch. There wasn't one."That's it?" I asked. "He just gave it up?""Guess so. Some men don't like fighting over dirt." There was a pause, papers shuffling on his end. "Congratulations, Ms. Vale. We can close as soon as your funds clear."I thanked him and hung up, and then I sat there for a long moment, turning it over.Adrian Black didn't strike me as a man who gave up anything easily. Not a parking lot standoff, not a staring contest, not thirty-one acres of dead grass and rusted iron.He hadn't lost interest. He'd decided something else mattered more than owning the land outright.I just had no idea what.I didn't know what that meant yet. I filed

THE FIRST JEALOUSY~ETHAN~I saw him before Sienna did.I'd driven back to the apartment to grab the golf clubs I'd left in the hall closet, and I was pulling into the lot when I spotted her car. Parked crooked, like she'd been in a hurry. Next to it, a black truck I didn't recognize. And leaning against that truck, arms crossed, was a man who looked like he'd been built in a lab somewhere to make other men feel small.Tall. Dark jacket. The kind of still that made you nervous just looking at him, like he was always one second from doing something you wouldn't see coming.Sienna stood in front of him, talking. Not nervous-talking, the way she talked to strangers. Comfortable-talking. The kind of talking she used to do with me, back before she turned into a woman who changed the locks without telling me why.I parked two spots down and got out slower than I needed to."Sienna."She turned. If she was surprised to see me, she didn't show it."Ethan. I thought you had your golf thing."

THE WARNING~SIENNA~Mr. Pruitt took both offers and promised to call by Friday. That was all. There was no auction and no bidding war as I had expected. There were just two folders and two signatures, and a nervous man in a tan coat drove away in his truck, as if he wanted to be anywhere but there.Marcus left first, tossing Adrian a look I didn't understand and didn't try to.I walked back to my car, my boots stepping on the dry grass, and I told myself I was finished here. I had submitted my offer. There was nothing left to do but wait.I didn't get very far."You know that place is isolated," Adrian said.I stopped. He hadn't moved from where he stood near the barn, hands back in his jacket pockets, watching me the way he watched everything. Like he was cataloging it.I turned halfway, just enough to look at him over my shoulder."That's the point," I said.He didn't smile. He didn't look surprised either. He just studied me for a long moment, the way you'd study a lock you weren'

THE OFFER~SIENNA~I had the offer ready by eight the next morning. It was for the full asking price and would be paid in cash after the probate process was complete. No inspection contingency, because I didn't care what was wrong with the house. I cared about the well, the cellar, and the thirty-one acres nobody else wanted.I emailed it to Mr. Pruitt at eight-oh-two.He called back at eight-eleven."That was fast," he said."I don't like waiting.""Well, you might have to." There was a pause. "The other buyer's agent just called. He wants to see it today instead of Thursday. Says he's ready to close in cash too."My stomach tightened."Today.""This afternoon. I figured you'd want to know, seeing as you were so eager yesterday.""Who is he?""Didn't say. His man handled everything. Real quiet about it." Mr. Pruitt sighed. "Look, Ms. Vale, I will take the higher offer, whoever it comes from. That's just business. But you got there first, and that ought to count for something.""I'll

I had a place to find.I opened my notebook and wrote five words across the top of a clean page.WELL. FARMLAND. UNDERGROUND. ROAD. DISTANCE.I didn't need a mansion. I needed these five things, and I knew why.Well. In my first life, the city ran out of clean water on Day 4. The pipes froze, then burst. I needed my own water, from deep in the ground, where ice couldn't reach it.Farmland. Canned food runs out. I had watched grown men fight over one potato in the bunker. I wa

WRONG WOMAN~ADRIAN~Sienna Vale was the wrong woman. That was the first thing I figured out, and it pissed me off.I sat at my kitchen table at eleven at night with a laptop, cold takeout, and a license plate I had no business running. A guy at the DMV owed me a favor. Now he didn't.The name came back in two minutes.Sienna Vale. Twenty-seven. One address, downtown, a nice building with clean hallways and a lot of cameras.I knew that building.Three days ago, I'd walked past it for a client's security bid. A woman almost walked into me at the entrance. Dark hair, keys in her hand. She looked at me half a second too long, like she was saving my face for later.I hadn't thought twice about it then.I was thinking twice now.I started digging. Her record was clean. No arrests. No liens. No debt worth mentioning. She paid her taxes on time, and her car was paid off. One parking ticket in six years.Boring. I liked boring. But boring people don't buy enough water filters to keep a smal
