CHAPTER 10: THE BOX

They had been in the box for 6 hours.

The gardening shed airlock. 6x6 metal box. No toilet, no bed, just two metal walls and a decontamination shower that sprayed them every 30 minutes. On camera, they looked miserable. Bianca was sitting on the floor, holding her big pregnant belly, crying quietly. Damian was lying down, his arm bleeding through the bandage EVA dropped from a slot, his face pale, sweating. Infection from human bites is deadly without antibiotics.

I was in the main bunker kitchen, eating the steak Killian forced me to eat. "For the pup," he said. My pup. Our pup. 3 weeks old and already making me eat more.

Killian stood by the main screen, watching the airlock camera, gun on his hip, not saying anything for 6 hours. He was angry. Not at me. At them. At the fact that I saved them.

At 11:00 AM, EVA spoke. "Mr. Thorne, Ms. Thorne, male human in airlock has fever 39.5C. Infection spreading. Without antibiotics in next 12 hours, he will lose his arm, then die of sepsis. Female human and fetus stable, but dehydrated. Airlock air will run out in 20 hours. Decision required."

Decision required. Save them fully or let the box become their coffin.

Killian looked at me. "Elena. We can drop antibiotics and water through the slot and leave them there. Let them heal in the box, then kick them out when horde leaves. They never enter main bunker. They never breathe our air. They never touch you."

Keep them like animals in a box. That was his solution. Monster solution, but safe for me and our baby.

I looked at the screen. Bianca looked up at the camera like she knew I was watching. She put her hands together, praying. Begging. Not to Killian. To me.

"Elena, please," she mouthed, no audio. "My baby. Please. Water."

Her baby. 7 months. My baby was 3 weeks. Both innocent.

"Killian," I whispered. "If we were in that box, pregnant, bleeding, would you want someone to give us water?"

He closed his eyes, jaw tight. "We would never be in that box. Because I prepared for 7 years. He prepared for 0. That's why he's dying in a box."

"But we are not monsters," I said, touching my stomach. "We can't teach our baby to be a monster who watches people die in a box when we have 10,000 bottles of water."

He looked at my stomach, at my hand on it. His monster face cracked.

"Fine," he said, voice low and dangerous. "But my rules. Rule 1: They never touch you. Rule 2: They stay in medical bay, locked. Rule 3: He" - he pointed at Damian on screen - "he apologizes on his knees for paying doctors to call you barren. And she" - pointed at Bianca - "she tells you she knew and laughed. I want to hear them say it. Then we give antibiotics."

He wanted justice for me. Not just safety. Justice.

I nodded, tears in eyes. "Okay."

Killian pressed the button. "EVA, open inner airlock door to medical bay. Seal main bunker corridor. Only medical bay access. Prepare decontamination. And bring me my knife."

Knife. He wanted his knife for them.

The inner door of the gardening shed airlock hissed open, connecting to our bunker medical bay. A long, white, clean corridor. Bianca helped Damian stand, dragging him, both of them stumbling into our medical bay, into our palace.

They fell on the clean white floor of our medical bay, dirty, bleeding, smelling like mud and sweat and blood, in our clean world.

Killian and I stood at the other end of the corridor, behind a glass wall. We were clean, in warm clothes. They were dirty, broken.

Bianca saw me first. She started crying hard. "Elena... Elena thank you... thank you for saving my baby..."

Damian looked up, his eyes finding mine, then finding Killian's hand on my stomach. Protective. His eyes widened. "You... you are pregnant? EVA said... you are pregnant? But you are barren... doctors said..."

Killian stepped forward, behind the glass, voice like ice that could cut. "Say it. Say what you did. Both of you. Say it to her face. Or I close this corridor and you die in this medical bay with no medicine. My wife is not barren. Say it."

Bianca broke first. On her knees, pregnant belly on floor, she sobbed. "Elena, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I knew! Damian told me he paid the doctors! He paid Dr. Smith and Dr. Lee to tell you your womb was scarred! He told me you were perfect, but he didn't want a child with you! He wanted to use barren as excuse to divorce you later and take the company! I knew and I laughed when you cried in garden! I told him you were stupid for believing! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! Please forgive me! For my baby!"

She knew. She knew and laughed. My best friend knew I was crying thinking I was broken and she laughed.

Damian was next. Fever, dying, but he knew Killian would kill him if he lied. "Elena... Elena I... I paid them. Yes. You were never barren. You were healthy. Perfect. But I... I didn't want a child with you. You were too good. Too kind. I wanted... I wanted someone like Bianca who wanted money, not love. So I could control. I paid them to say you were barren. So you would stay, think no one else would want you. So you would beg me to stay. I'm sorry. I was a monster. Not like him. A cheap monster."

Cheap monster. Yes.

I was crying. Not sad tears. Angry tears. Seven years of thinking I was empty, defective, less than a woman. Three years of 2 AM garden crying. All because this man paid $500 to a doctor.

Killian's hand found mine, squeezing hard.

"Good," Killian said coldly. "Now you know. Now she knows. EVA, give them water. One bottle. And antibiotics for him. One dose. And then lock medical bay. They stay there. No entry to main bunker. Ever."

EVA dropped a bottle of water and antibiotics through the slot.

Bianca grabbed the water, drinking like an animal, then giving to Damian. Damian took antibiotics with shaking hands.

They were alive. In our medical bay. Locked. Our prisoners and our patients.

I looked at my stomach. 3 weeks. Their baby 7 months. Two pregnant women, one bunker, one man who owned everything.

Outside, the horde banged on the fence, 60 infected, smelling blood, wanting in.

Inside, the real drama was just starting. Because a bunker that was built for two now had four. And one of them used to be my husband. And one of them used to be my best friend. And both of them knew I was never barren.

And at 12:00 PM, EVA said something that made Killian drop his gun again.

"Ms. Thorne, update: Your pregnancy hormones doubled overnight. This usually indicates... twins. Congratulations, Ms. Thorne. Twins."

Twins.

I wasn't having one baby.

I was having two.

And Bianca, on the floor behind glass, heard it too. Her face went white.

The next day, I woke up feeling happy.Yesterday was a good day. Nobody fought. Everybody was calm. Damian even helped Bianca. I thought maybe he had really changed.I was wrong.I woke up in Killian's arms again. He was already awake, watching me."Good morning, my love," he whispered. He kissed my forehead."Good morning," I said. I smiled. "Today I feel strong. The twins did not disturb me too much last night."He smiled. "Good. That means they slept well."He helped me to sit up. He held my back."Eva," he said, "turn on the camera and audio for our room."But Eva did not answer.Killian frowned. "Eva?"Still no answer. The room was quiet. The small light on the wall was not blinking like it used to.Killian stood up. He walked to the speaker. "Eva, are you there?"Nothing.I looked at him. "Killian, what happened to Eva?"He shook his head. "I don't know. Let me check."He walked to the main room. I followed him slowly.Leo was already awake. Bianca was holding Tiny Elena. Damian

I slept in the afternoon. Not deep sleep. Just small rest, the way Killian always tells me to rest. His hand was still on my belly when I woke up. He had not left me.He was sitting beside the bed, watching me. When he saw my eyes open, he smiled."You are awake, my love," he said softly. "Did you sleep well?""yes, I did," I said. "The twins were kicking me. I think they don't want me to sleep."He laughed small. "They are like their father. Stubborn."I laughed too. "Killian, so you know that you're stubborn."He helped me to sit up slowly. He held my back, the way he always does. He gave me water. Eva had already prepared warm water through the automated kitchen. Killian brought it to me himself. He does not let anyone else to bring water for me. He likes to bring it himself."Drink slowly," he said.I drank slowly. He watched me."Eva," he said, "turn on the camera and audio for the main room."Eva answered, "Yes, Killian. Main room camera on."We could hear Leo laughing in the ma

The door closed behind them.I stood there for a few seconds, just looking at the door. My hand was still in the air, where Killian's hand was before.I felt empty immediately. Even though I know he will come back, my heart always beats fast when he goes outside.Bianca looked at me. "Are you okay?" she asked.I nodded. "Yes. I am okay. I just... I always worry when he goes out.""I understand," she said. "I used to worry like that too."Leo pulled my dress small. "Elena, don't worry. Killian is strong. He will beat everybody."I smiled. "I know, Leo. He is strong."I sat down slowly on the chair. My belly was heavy this morning. The twins were moving small small. I placed my hand on my belly to calm them."Eva," I said, "show me outside camera."Eva answered, "Yes, Elena. Showing outside camera now."The small screen on the wall came on. I could see Killian and Damian walking outside. The outside was quiet. The sun was just coming up. The road was empty. No raiders. No noise. Only th

CHAPTER 29: THE MORNING AFTERI woke up slowly. The room was still dim. The soft light from the wall was still on low, the way Killian likes it at night. I did not open my eyes at first. I just stayed there, listening. His breathing was steady. His arm was still around me. His hand was still on my belly. He had not moved all night.I opened my eyes a little. He was awake and was looking at me."Good morning, my love," he whispered.I smiled. "Good morning. You still did not sleep?"He smiled back. "I didn't sleep much. But I woke up early to watch you. You were sleeping like an angel again."I laughed small. "Killian, you always say that.""Because it is true," he said. He kissed my forehead. "How is your body? Did the twins disturb you at night?""just a little" I said. "They kicked once, then they slept again. I think they like sleeping on your chest too."He laughed. His laugh was low and soft, so it would not wake the whole bunker. He rubbed my belly slowly, in small circles. "Goo

  • REBORN 7 DAYS BEFORE MY BILLIONAIRE HUSBAND LEFT ME TO DIE    CHAPTER 29: BACK TO OUR ROOM

It was bedtime in Bunker 3.Everyone had already cleaned up. The day had been long and heavy, and the bunker finally felt quiet. Killian had washed off the mud from the run. Leo had washed his hands and face, and his shoes were by the door drying. Damian had wiped his pipe clean and kept it beside him. Bianca had changed Tiny Elena's small cloth, and the baby was now resting peacefully. The generator was steady. Eva had dimmed the lights for the night, and the whole bunker had that soft, sleepy feeling.I was in the inner room with Bianca and little Elena to make sure that her body is finally calm and at the same I was waiting for Killian to finish up so we can go back to our room. Tiny Elena was asleep on Bianca's chest. Her fever had gone down. Her little chain was still around her neck, resting gently against Bianca's skin. Bianca looked tired, but she looked peaceful too, the way a mother looks when her baby is finally sleeping. Then Killian came in.He did not whisper. He spoke

  • REBORN 7 DAYS BEFORE MY BILLIONAIRE HUSBAND LEFT ME TO DIE    CHAPTER 27: THE INCUBATOR

The drum changed everything. After Killian dragged it in and Damian sealed the three locks, Eva connected the fuel line herself. She is not just a voice on the speaker. She has arms in the walls. She plugged it in, checked the pressure, and the generator stopped coughing. The yellow light got brighter. Not bright like before the world ended, but steady. No more flicker."Power stable at 68%," Eva said. "We can run the incubator now."Bianca looked up from the mattress. Tiny Elena was in her arms, burning up. Her little body was hot, too hot. She had been crying in that small, tired way for hours, and her breathing was fast."We need to build it now," Bianca said.Killian was already moving. He had been saving parts for this for weeks — a clear plastic box from the old clinic, a small heater, some wires, a soft blanket. Damian, even with his arm still sore from the Day 1 bite, helped him carry the box to the inner room. Today is Day 88, he is almost recovered, so he could lift with one
