POV: GUINE

Two letters arrived on the same morning. One offered a warning. The other offered a collar.

The cold dawn light had barely crept over the sharp stone peaks of Eclipse Hollow when Mrs. Ashcombe entered my study, carrying a polished silver tray. On it rested two sealed envelopes. I sat at my mahogany writing desk, surrounded by open ledgers, maps, and supply inventories, pulling my thick velvet shawl tightly around my shoulders against the morning chill.

"Riders arrived before sunrise, Lady Guine," Mrs. Ashcombe said softly, setting the tray beside my tea porcelain. Her hands trembled slightly, her eyes darting between the two distinct wax seals. "Neither rider waited for a reply."

I looked down at the desk.

The first letter was bound in heavy, textured cream parchment, sealed with black wax stamped with an intricate, formidable crest, a silver raven coiled around a broadsword.

The second letter was wrapped in smooth, pale pink vellum, smelling faintly of sweet jasmine and elderflower. It was sealed with a gilded serpent wrapped around a blooming white rose.

Percival Wynthrone and Morgause Wren.

I picked up Percival’s letter first, breaking the heavy black wax. His handwriting was dark, sharp, and precise, written with the firm hand of a military commander who wasted no words on pleasantries.

Lady Guine Ravenshade,

Word has reached my garrison that an heir has claimed the seat of Eclipse Hollow. My forward patrols have discovered several dead beasts along our shared northern boundary, animals left without physical wounds, their eyes turned to silver ash. Something ancient is stirring beneath the mountain soil.

Stay clear of the northern woodland after sunset. Sovereign rights will not protect you from what wanders in the dark.

— Alpha Percival Wynthrone

I stared at the black ink, feeling the quiet weight behind his words. It was not an order, nor was it an attempt to usurp my authority. It was a cold, clinical warning from a powerful neighbor who recognized that the ground beneath our feet was changing. The silver ash... it sounded chillingly similar to the early signs of the Moonfall I had witnessed in my first life. The fifty-day countdown was ticking faster than I cared to admit.

I set Percival’s letter aside and picked up the pink vellum envelope.

Breaking the gilded rose seal, I unfolded the parchment. Morgause's handwriting was delicate, full of dramatic swoops and elegant loops, but the sweetness of the ink could not hide the venom dripping from every sentence.

My Dear Guine,

I hope the rugged air of the mountains has given you time to reflect upon the tragic scene you caused before the pack elders. We were all so deeply grieved by your sudden departure.

Kael is a noble, forgiving Alpha, Guine. Despite your hysterical public rejection, he remains willing to overlook your foolishness and welcome you back into the household, provided, of course, that you show proper humility and acknowledge your place. Furthermore, to prove your devotion to our family's future, you must immediately transfer three-quarters of the Ravenshade estate gold into a trust for little Sefa. It is only right that the child’s inheritance be secured before you squander it on neglected stones.

A woman without a pack is a vulnerable, helpless thing in these dangerous times. Do not let your pride destroy you. Return home, apologize to Kael, and let us put this unpleasant business behind us.

— Morgause Wren

A bitter, chilling laugh escaped my lips.

She called my rejection "hysterical." She demanded three-quarters of my ancestral gold under the guise of securing Sefa's future, while subtly threatening me with the isolation of a packless wolf. She truly believed that a few condescending words and a gilded promise of Kael’s conditional forgiveness would bring me weeping to her knees.

In my first life, a letter like this would have filled me with suffocating guilt. I would have spent hours agonizing over Sefa’s future, worrying if I was truly being selfish, wondering if I had failed as a woman and a mate. I would have questioned my own sanity and handed over my key to keep the peace.

Now, looking at her swooping calligraphy, I felt no guilt. I felt no doubt.

I felt only the sharp, blinding clarity of absolute hatred.

Morgause did not want peace. She did not care about Sefa’s trust fund, nor did she care about bringing unity to the pack. She wanted me small again. She wanted me stripped of my wealth, stripped of my title, and locked back in the shadows where I couldn't threaten her position as Kael’s favored mate. She wanted a broken servant she could rule over.

I stood up from my desk, carrying the pink letter over to the grand stone fireplace.

I tossed the parchment directly into the roaring flames.

The pink vellum curled, blackened, and ignited, the sweet jasmine scent burning away into harsh smoke as the fire devoured her arrogant words. I watched it burn with cold, unwavering eyes, feeling the dark mark on my wrist pulse with a low, satisfying warmth.

Let her send her threats. Let Kael await my apology. They had no idea that the woman they tried to break had already buried her grief, and built a fortress in its place.

I turned back to my desk, picking up my quill to begin writing a formal response to Alpha Percival Wynthrone regarding the northern border patrols.

Behind me, the flames in the hearth flickered down to glowing embers.

I happened to glance back toward the fireplace. The letter had been almost entirely reduced to gray ash, but resting on a half-burnt ember at the very bottom of the hearth, a single strip of thick parchment had resisted the fire.

Written in dark, unburnt ink, one final line remained glaringly visible through the embers:

“You cannot protect what you do not deserve.”

POV: PERCIVALI had spent years ignoring the old stories about Eclipse Hollow. Now the stories were beginning to bleed into the present. The council meeting left a bitter, foul taste in my mouth. Watching Roderick Thornfield use the early tremors of a disaster to stage a shameless land grab was predictable, but Guine Ravenshade’s response had been anything but standard noble posturing. Her absolute refusal to be managed, manipulated, or intimidated by the elders was a rare sight in a chamber built on political concessions. Yet, that very strength was drawing a dangerous kind of attention, the sort of spotlight an isolated heiress with a dormant fortress could ill afford. The wind howled savagely through the stone battlements of my northern garrison as night settled over the peaks. Inside my private study, the only light came from the crackling hearth and a single, low tallow candle.I pulled a heavy, iron-bound tome from the deepest compartment of the Wynthrone archives. Its black lea

POV: GUINEThey tried to take my land with laws and polite words. I answered them with the only language they truly understood, refusal.Lord Roderick Thornfield stepped forward to the center of the council floor, his posture oozing practiced concern. He bowed smoothly to the five high elders, adjusting the heavy velvet collar of his cloak before pointing a gloved finger directly toward me."Elders of the High Council," Roderick began, his voice projecting across the grand stone amphitheater with dramatic flair. "We stand on the precipice of a crisis. Reports of an unknown, dark affliction in the northern valley grow by the day. And where does this threat cluster? Around the walls of Eclipse Hollow, an estate that has sat dormant, neglected, and exposed for decades, now claimed by a packless, inexperienced woman who lacks the garrison strength to maintain a proper quarantine."He paused, letting his words hang heavy in the quiet room. "For the safety of our shared borders, I petition

POV: GUINEThey wanted me to arrive afraid. I arrived as the woman who no longer needed their approval. The official summons had arrived at first light, stamped with the heavy crimson wax of the Territorial Council. It was not a courteous request for a meeting; it was a formal command to appear before the high elders at high noon to answer charges of "territorial negligence" and "unlawful endangerment of public safety."Mrs. Ashcombe had wrung her hands raw while lacing my boots in the stone dressing room. "Lord Roderick Thornfield spent three hours in the council chamber yesterday evening, Lady Guine," she had warned, her voice trembling with anxiety. "He brought two lords from the southern district with him. They are setting a trap for you."I hadn't needed her warnings, nor had I needed to hear the gossip of the estate guards. The hand of Morgause Wren was written all over this sudden council assembly. She had promised to make my life at Eclipse Hollow difficult, and using Lord Rod

POV: GUINEPercival returned with proof that the sickness was spreading. Morgause returned with a different kind of poison. The morning frost had barely turned to dew on the courtyard cobblestones when the heavy clatter of armored hooves echoed through the outer archway. I stood on the grand stone terrace of Eclipse Hollow, my thick fur-lined mantle pulled tight against the mountain wind, watching Alpha Percival Wynthrone ride through my gates. He rode alone this time, leaving his garrison warriors stationed at the northern ridge. Disengaging from his heavy black stallion with fluid grace, he strolled up the marble steps, holding a thick leather folder bound with red wire."Lady Guine," Percival acknowledged, bowing his head slightly. The unyielding silence of his mind remained an impenetrable wall, but his amber eyes burned with a dark, intense gravity."Alpha Percival," I replied, gesturing toward the sheltered stone alcove. "I assume Physician Harrow's isolation protocols were not

POV: PHYSICIAN BENEDICT HARROWI have treated every kind of wound a wolf can receive. Nothing prepared me for blood that refused to die.I stood over the stone dissecting table in the lower cellars of Eclipse Hollow, my leather-gloved hands trembling slightly as I adjusted the oil lamp. Forty years of practice across war zones, pack skirmishes, and winter fevers had made me a man not easily shaken. But the specimen resting in the glass-sealed tray defied every medical textbook, every anatomical truth, and every law of nature I had spent my life studying. The severed flesh of the mountain creature showed no arterial decay. Where red blood should have clotted, a thick, metallic silver residue pooled, clinging to the bone like living mercury. When I scraped a sample onto parchment, it did not dry. It pulsed.A soft rustle of silk made me turn. Lady Guine Ravenshade stood at the edge of the examination circle, shrouded in a deep velvet mantle. Beside her stood Alpha Percival Wynthrone, si

POV: GUINEThe fox was dead. The thing inside it was not.A sickening snap echoed through the silent clearing as the creature’s spine twisted at an unnatural angle. Its cloud-covered, metallic silver eyes glared blindly up at the canopy, and the thin stream of glowing silver mist spilling from its jaws coiled into the freezing air like living smoke.Metal rasped sharply against leather.Behind us, Percival’s Beta and my mercenary captain drew their broadswords in unison. Percival himself shifted his weight smoothly, his long sword clearing its scabbard with practiced, silent grace. His towering form moved instinctively between the creature and me, his broad shoulders cutting off the creature's path."Stay back, Lady Guine," Percival commanded, his low voice tight with suppressed power. The reanimated fox let out a wet, guttural hiss, a sound no wild animal could ever make, and lunged forward from the snow.Percival didn't hesitate. In a single, fluid arc, his silver-steel blade swept
