Aurora’s POV

“The only one what?” I asked.

Caden did not look up from the floor. “I don’t know. That’s the truth. I have never known what my father is.” He breathed out. “I only know that animals are afraid of him, and so are most of the people who meet him. And he is afraid of Bishop.”

“And now you think I’m like him.”

“I think Bishop does.” He looked at me then. “That’s worse.”

I sat down. A week ago I had been afraid of what was coming for the city. Now I was afraid of what was already insid

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: The First Female Alpha   Chapter 26 Keep Him Alive

Aurora’s POVMy husband had asked about me like a man checking a fact he already had, and I wanted to go straight home and look him in the face. But I went to Gloria’s first, because I kept thinking of her standing in that kitchen doorway.I took my car from my parents’ driveway for the first time in three days. The blue car was still at the corner, and I let it see me go. There was no point in hiding anymore. Bishop already had what he wanted from me.She lived across town, on the third floor of an old brick building with a green door at the top of the stairs. I knocked three times before she came. When she opened the door, she stood in the gap with one hand on the frame, so I could not come in. Her eyes were red, and there was mascara on her cheek where she had wiped it with the back of her hand.“What do you want?”“To talk to you.”“You talk all the time, Aurora. You just never say anything meaningful.” But she let go of the frame and walked back inside, and she left the door open

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: The First Female Alpha   Chapter 25 The Man in the Rain

Aurora’s POVI deleted both results before anyone could come in.I kept my back to the camera while I cleared the machine’s memory, and then I threw the used tubes in the bin for burning. I did not write anything down, because I knew I would never forget what that screen had said. Not related. Born with it. The words kept going round in my head, and I did not think they would ever stop. Then I sat on the stool and tried to think about Bishop’s sample. If I refused to give it, he would go back to Cinder Lane, and this time he would not leave Walter at home. I thought about giving him somebody else’s blood instead, but Bishop knew these tests better than I did, and he would see it at once. Every way I turned it, I came back to the same answer. I had to give him my own blood, and I hated it.At five to nine there was a knock at the door. It was the courier in the black jacket, the same one who had come for my notes, with a small white box under his arm.“Good morning, Dr. Blake. Mr. Bisho

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: The First Female Alpha   Chapter 24 Not Mine

Aurora’s POVI did not wake Ivy. I got up from the chair slowly, so it would not creak, and I stood between her bed and the door.Whatever was out there knew I was here. I could hear it breathing. It was slow and even, like someone trying hard to stay calm.I opened the door.A man stood in the hall, under the light I had left on. He was very thin, and his shirt hung off him. He wore pale blue pants, the kind patients wear in a hospital. His feet were bare and dirty. Around one ankle was a loose metal band, and a small tag hung from it. When he moved, the tag hit the band.Clink.His eyes were gold all the way across.I did not scream. Later I thought I should have. But my body did not want to. It knew something my head did not.He looked at me. Then he went down on one knee on my mother’s carpet and lowered his head, with his chin almost on his chest and his eyes closed. It was the same bow the man in bed six had given me on the night he died.“Who sent you?” I whispered. He did not

Now I was afraid of what was already inside me.I wanted to ask him a hundred things. But the kitchen clock said almost one, and Bishop wanted my blood in the morning. If I gave it to him before I knew what was in it, he would know more about me than I did. I could not let that happen.“I need to go to my parents’,” I said.“They’ll be watching the house.”“I know a way in.”He did not tell me to stop this time. He only said, “Be careful, Aurora,” the way people say it when they know you won’t be.On my way out I told Walter to lock the

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: The First Female Alpha   Chapter 22 What the Dogs Knew

Aurora’s POVWalter pushed my purse into my arms and pointed at the front door.“Go,” he said. “You heard the man.”“I heard him.”“Then go. They want the old man who used to hold the keys. Let them have him.” He said it calmly, as if he were telling me where he kept the sugar. “I have answered worse questions than theirs.”I looked at the low door in the corner of the kitchen. If they took Walter, they would come back for his house. Men with dogs would walk down those steep stairs and pull the string for the light, and every box he had saved from the fire would go into the back of a van. And Walter, in his old cardigan, would be sitting in a room somewhere and answering their questions for as long as they liked. They had come for Walter because his name was on that building’s papers. Thirty years ago, he had been the man who held its keys, and somebody had just used one of them. They did not know about the cellar yet.But they knew about me now. And Bishop wanted me. That was the one

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: The First Female Alpha   Chapter 21 The Dogs on Cinder Lane

Aurora’s POVWhen the elevator opened on the ground floor, I made myself walk slowly across the lobby. If I ran, I would be showing Bishop exactly which house to look for.The tan jacket man was in his chair by the elevators again, with a brown jacket today, and a newspaper open on his knee. He turned a page as I passed.Outside, I stood on the step and pretended to look for something in my purse. My legs wanted to run, but I would not let them.Walter. The cellar full of boxes he had carried home one wheelbarrow at a time. And in his freezer, the last of the blood from bed six, the only proof I had left.‘Why would he tell me?’ I thought.Bishop did not say things by accident. If he already knew which house it was, he would not have needed to warn me. He would have sent his dogs and let me hear about it later.Unless he didn’t know. Unless he wanted me to run there and show him.I turned my phone off and started walking. At the first corner I stopped at the crossing with a crowd of pe
