Chapter 24 Not Mine

Aurora’s POV

I did not wake Ivy. I got up from the chair slowly, so it would not creak, and I stood between her bed and the door.

Whatever was out there knew I was here. I could hear it breathing. It was slow and even, like someone trying hard to stay calm.

I opened the door.

A man stood in the hall, under the light I had left on. He was very thin, and his shirt hung off him. He wore pale blue pants, the kind patients wear in a hospital. His feet were bare and dirty. Around one ankle was a loos

Aurora's POV"Keep him alive from who?" I asked.Damian did not answer. He picked up his bag and went up the stairs, and a moment later I heard our bedroom door close, softly, the way you close a door when there is a child asleep in the house. There was no child in the house. Ivy was across the city with my parents, and my husband was upstairs being quiet for nobody.I stood alone in the kitchen with my hands on the edge of the counter.I was so angry that I could feel it in my teeth. He had sat at my father's table and asked about me. He had called my sister and asked if I was hearing things. And now he wanted me to believe that he was the only thing standing between my father and Bishop. How did he even know that Dad had something to tell me?Then I thought of the camera in my lab, and the courier at my door with his message. Mr. Bishop hopes your father is well. Bishop knew I had tested Dad against myself. Anyone who knew that could guess where I would go next, and who I would ask.

Aurora’s POVMy husband had asked about me like a man checking a fact he already had, and I wanted to go straight home and look him in the face. But I went to Gloria’s first, because I kept thinking of her standing in that kitchen doorway.I took my car from my parents’ driveway for the first time in three days. The blue car was still at the corner, and I let it see me go. There was no point in hiding anymore. Bishop already had what he wanted from me.She lived across town, on the third floor of an old brick building with a green door at the top of the stairs. I knocked three times before she came. When she opened the door, she stood in the gap with one hand on the frame, so I could not come in. Her eyes were red, and there was mascara on her cheek where she had wiped it with the back of her hand.“What do you want?”“To talk to you.”“You talk all the time, Aurora. You just never say anything meaningful.” But she let go of the frame and walked back inside, and she left the door open

Aurora’s POVI deleted both results before anyone could come in.I kept my back to the camera while I cleared the machine’s memory, and then I threw the used tubes in the bin for burning. I did not write anything down, because I knew I would never forget what that screen had said. Not related. Born with it. The words kept going round in my head, and I did not think they would ever stop. Then I sat on the stool and tried to think about Bishop’s sample. If I refused to give it, he would go back to Cinder Lane, and this time he would not leave Walter at home. I thought about giving him somebody else’s blood instead, but Bishop knew these tests better than I did, and he would see it at once. Every way I turned it, I came back to the same answer. I had to give him my own blood, and I hated it.At five to nine there was a knock at the door. It was the courier in the black jacket, the same one who had come for my notes, with a small white box under his arm.“Good morning, Dr. Blake. Mr. Bisho

When he moved, the tag hit the band.Clink.His eyes were gold all the way across.I did not scream. Later I thought I should have. But my body did not want to. It knew something my head did not.He looked at me. Then he went down on one knee on my mother’s carpet and lowered his head, with his chin almost on his chest and his eyes closed. It was the same bow the man in bed six had given me on the night he died.“Who sent you?” I whispered. He did not

Aurora’s POV“The only one what?” I asked.Caden did not look up from the floor. “I don’t know. That’s the truth. I have never known what my father is.” He breathed out. “I only know that animals are afraid of him, and so are most of the people who meet him. And he is afraid of Bishop.”“And now you think I’m like him.”“I think Bishop does.” He looked at me then. “That’s worse.”I sat down. A week ago I had been afraid of what was coming for the city. Now I was afraid of what was already inside me.I wanted to ask him a hundred things. But the kitchen clock said almost one, and Bishop wanted my blood in the morning. If I gave it to him before I knew what was in it, he would know more about me than I did. I could not let that happen.“I need to go to my parents’,” I said.“They’ll be watching the house.”“I know a way in.”He did not tell me to stop this time. He only said, “Be careful, Aurora,” the way people say it when they know you won’t be.On my way out I told Walter to lock the

Aurora’s POVWalter pushed my purse into my arms and pointed at the front door.“Go,” he said. “You heard the man.”“I heard him.”“Then go. They want the old man who used to hold the keys. Let them have him.” He said it calmly, as if he were telling me where he kept the sugar. “I have answered worse questions than theirs.”I looked at the low door in the corner of the kitchen. If they took Walter, they would come back for his house. Men with dogs would walk down those steep stairs and pull the string for the light, and every box he had saved from the fire would go into the back of a van. And Walter, in his old cardigan, would be sitting in a room somewhere and answering their questions for as long as they liked. They had come for Walter because his name was on that building’s papers. Thirty years ago, he had been the man who held its keys, and somebody had just used one of them. They did not know about the cellar yet.But they knew about me now. And Bishop wanted me. That was the one
