Chapter Four

Violet was busy for the rest of the morning.

She went to the lawyer’s office based on the directions he’d given her. Before he helped her process her inheritance however, she had him draft a divorce agreement.

The lawyer, Mr Whitmore, a man in his late forties, was sharp, professional and asked no intrusive questions. He immediately did as Violet asked and soon produced the divorce papers before her.

After signing her name at the bottom of it, she had a copy sent to the Carter home. That night, she booked a motel and slept well, dreaming of her good fortune.

The system task loomed before her as she washed up the next morning and prepared to go back to the lawyer’s office.

She could not wait to fulfill it and explore more of the system’s benefits and upgrades it had promised her.

She stepped into Mr Whitmore’s office, looking more radiant and refreshed than she’d been for years since she got married.

Mr Whitmore handed her some papers as soon as she sat down.

“Here, he signed them.” He announced, "You're officially single as of this moment, Miss Ashford.”

Violet stared at the papers in her trembling hands.

Relief flooded through her and tears of joy stung her eyes, making her nose itch.

She was finally free of those leeches.

Mr Whitmore watched her, a small affectionate smile on his lips. He had not asked any questions concerning his client’s sudden decision to divorce.

But judging from her reaction, he knew that she must have needed it.

She also did not seem like someone who would make such a hasty decision out of nowhere. Violet’s person and conduct since he'd met her the day before had only been with a quiet grace. She’d been respectful, and had provided him with no stress.

He really wished her well in her endeavours.

And considering she was the daughter of his very close friend, he was really eager to help her and see her do well.

“Thank you,” Violet told him softly.

“It was my very good pleasure, Miss Ashford," He answered, “Now let’s get right on with processing your inheritance, shall we?”

Within the next hour, they’d gone through everything which her adopted father had left for her as an inheritance.

“Your father’s total estate has been valued at approximately five billion dollars,” Mr. Whitmore explained. “This includes his investments, properties, shares, gold, jewellery, and other rare collectibles.”

Five billion. Violet swallowed hard.

Even though Violet had expected her father to leave her a substantial fortune, seeing the figure in black and white was still staggering.

This was the same exact amount in her previous life, the same amount of money that the Carter family had squandered recklessly.

She won’t be that foolish this time.

A sense of urgency descended upon her. If her memories were correct, she’d returned to a month before the apocalypse , and it’s already been over a day.

There was so much to and so little time.

She looked at the lawyer, “How much can I get immediately available in cash?”

“Approximately six hundred and fifty million dollars in bank deposits.” Mr Whitmore replied, placing a bank card in front of her.

Violet flipped through the documents in the thick Manila envelope. She took notes of the properties, shares as well as rare collectibles which were worth hundreds of millions. It was useless to keep them in their current form.

She needed the cash ASAP and she was going to be getting it.

“Mr Whitmore, i want to sell all my shares and properties as well as the rare collectibles.”

The lawyer looked up at her in surprise, “What?”

He was about to give from his little knowledge of financial advice, but the clear and determined look in her eyes made him stop short.

“This shares and properties are worth billions,” he started calmly, “Liquidating the shares and selling selected properties could make cash considerably more available, although some transactions will take longer than others.”

“Then begin the sales immediately.” Violet replied without a moment’s hestitaton, “You can sell them at 10% less of the market price. Prioritize the shares and properties that can be liquidated quickly. Transfer the proceeds into my account as soon as the transactions are completed.” She stood up from her chair, “How soon can I get the proceeds?”

The lawyer looked at her exasperation but he smiled faintly and said, “These are high value assets. I guarantee you will have them in three days.”

Three days?

Violet bit her lips in hesitation. That was far too long. But she still had 650 million in her card. That could get her started on things.

After discussing the remaining assets, Violet collected her documents and left the office.

She had barely settled into the back seat of her car when a translucent blue screen materialized before her eyes.

Violet froze.

[Task reminder: Go to the Willow district sales office sales office and purchase the RoseHaven Estate]

Violet’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. The RoseHaven estate in the Willow district?

Why did that sound so familiar?

The Willow district was the exact same place where the Carter family lived. Violet did not wish to still be around them but if the system suggested that place, then there must be something about it, right?

Then her eyes widened in realization as she finally recalled what the Rose Haven Estate was.

It was the biggest and most beautiful estate in their district and community at large. Recently, the owners went bankrupt and had to put up the estate for sale.

She remembered the high walls, and the rolling acres of land in this private estate, which was all good and luxurious now but in extreme heat weather, it would be nothing but dry land.

Why would the system ask her to purchase this estate?

Well, there was only one way to find out.

She started her car and drove off to the sales office in Willow district.

Meanwhile, in the Carter residence, Evelyn had just discovered that Elias had signed off on the divorce papers.

She was dissatisfied with his decision.

“Why would you divorce her?!” She berated her son, throwing her hands in the air in displeasure, “Even though Violet was barren and a burden on our family, you should not have been quick to divorce her!”

“Yes, Elias,” Bianca put in, her mouth set in petulance, “Why did you let her go just like that? Who’s going to take care of Theo and your mother in her old age? That is a wife’s duty.”

Bianca and Evelyn were very dissatisfied with this divorce. It was not because they cared about Violet but because they’d lost their cash cow and free maid.

Who would give them the money to keep up their lavish lifestyle?

Evelyn gritted her teeth in annoyed regret. Who would buy her expensive pearls and pay for her trips with her friends to choice locations in the city now?

She was to use to that extravagant lifestyle. Did she now have to give them up?

Bianca was pissed as well.

Although she wanted Elias all to herself, she still took pleasure in making Violet’s life hell, treating her like a maid, and a free nanny for her son.

She knew nothing about taking care of a child, and glancing over at Theo, who was making a mess of his baby mush in his high chair, she shuddered visibly.

She was a neat freak.

How was she going to clean him up? She had no desire to touch all the nasty goo, spit and poo which the baby emitted.

Elias had better bring back Violet ASAP.

Evelyn slapped her thighs in anger, “Elias, you’d have to bring her back. I don’t care how but you can’t let her go like that! I forbid it!”

Her relationship with Evelyn had been strained as Evelyn saw she was not as compliant as Violet, and Bianca thought Evelyn was an insufferable, old woman.

Where on earth would you get the money to purchase an eighty-million dollar property?!” he went on arrogantly, whipping out his own card, “You’re a poor orphan with no inheritance as well. Do you think you can fool us all?” He placed the card on the table before the sales agent, “Swipe it,” he uttered cockily. The sales agent quickly collected it, “Yes sir.” He
