Chapter 2

A scream tore from Elena’s throat as she saw Davod and Chelsea having sex on her bed.

Elena’s phone fell to the ground with a crash as David pulled away from Chelsea and hurriedly covered himself with the sheets.

“Elena, we can talk about this,” He raised his hands and spoke in a patronizing tone.

“Hello?” Elena could hear the 911 attendant’s voice callling out on her phone as she staggered back and the baseball bat dropped from her hands.

“Hi Lena, it’s been awhile,” Chelsea smiled provocatively and winked.

Elena’s breaths began to come in short spurts as the room spun around her.

“Elena, calm down,” She vaguely heard David call out to her as Chelsea chuckled, but before she could process anything, the room went black.

*******

“Mrs Windsor?” Elena’s eyes fluttered open as she observed everything around her.

A doctor was staring down at her with pity in his eyes. Where was David?

“W wter,” Elena croaked as she gently pushed herself to a sitting position.

A nurse lifted a glass with a straw to her lips and as she greedily sucked the straw, the memories of what had happened flooded her brain and she burst into hysterical sobs.

“Mrs Windsor? Please calm down,” the doctor said softly as he signalled the nurses who stood by her side to gently held her hands.

“M m… I” Elena stuttered as she tried and failed to reduce her tears.

“Please. Calm down, I ran some tests and I have some news that’ll help you feel better,”

Elena took in deep breaths and sobered up enough for the doctor to go on.

“Congratulations Ma’am,” He paused for a moment and opened the file in his hand to read directly from it. “You're six weeks pregnant." The doctor announced it with a smile.

Elena stared at the doctor in disbelief. Pregnant? She’s been married five years why would she be pregnant now?

“Um doctor,” Elena shook her head and held up a hand for him to stop speaking “ Sorry but I think you’re mistaken. I’m certainly not pregnant,”

An amused smile flitted on the doctor’s lips as he handed Elena the file in his hands.

“See for yourself Madam. What exciting news!” The doctor beamed

Elena’s hands shook as she opened the file as stated at the test results. She was really pregnant!

Joy coursed through her, followed by immediate sadness as she recalled the very reason she was in the hospital.

“Of course, you’ll be assigned to an experienced gynecologist right away. She’ll get you started and give you all the details,” The doctor finished as the nurses began to leave.

“Thank you, doctor. Please, how did I get to the hospital? ” Elena leaned back on her pillow and waited for the doctor’s reply.

“Your husband, Mr. Windsor, bought you in. You passed out from stress and he left just a few minutes ago,”

“Thank you,” Elena mumbled as the doctor exited the room, shutting the door behind him.

The sharp smell of the hospital coupled with the droning sound of the air conditioner made Elena’s stomach turn but she couldn’t deny the relief and shame that washed over her at the thought that David bought her to the hospital.

He left Chelsea didn’t he? So he cared for her and this was all just a horrible mistake.

Elena placed her palm on her stomach with a relieved smile. Her baby would help heal her marriage.

******

Elena sat up slowly as the room door handle turned and David stepped into the room.

“How do you feel now?” He whispered as he sank into a chair by the hospital bed and held Elena’s palm in his hand.

“Better now that you’re here. David, we need to talk,” Elena replied as she bit her bottom lip in worry.

"Yeah, about that,” David said in a heavy voice as he slipped off his wedding ring and placed it in her palm.

“David, what is this?" Elena shook her head in confusion and fear.

“Elena,” David said pleadingly as he closed her palm over his wedding ring and dropped it gently.

“No! You don’t get to call my name like that. Take this ring back, right now!” Elena said in a shaky voice as tears she didn’t know she had been holding spilled down her cheeks.

“Elena I’m sorry, but I can’t do this anymore,” David said in a sympathetic voice as he stood up from the chair.

What?! This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. David was supposed to beg and she was supposed to forgive him so they lived happily with their child.

“David, stop. Please, we can work something out,” Elena shook her head vehemently.

“Elena, I want to be with Chelsea. I’m sorry but I can’t do this anymore,”

Anger coursed through Elenaas she let out a crazed laugh, ripped the hospital IV from her arm and stood up on shaky legs.

“Can’t do this? Can’t do this?” Elena muttered frantically to herself as she walked towards David, clutching the test results in her hand.

“I’m PREGNANT! David, I’m pregnant!” Elena yelled as she angrily threw the test results at him.

David looked momentarily shocked but he shook his head with pity in his eyes.

“Elena, I’ll be there for the child, but-” David trailed off as he stared at Elena.

“The child?! David, we have been married for five years! Five! This is OUR child. Our first baby, and you want to bail?” Elena screamed as angry tears began to stream down her cheeks.

David looked behind him, through the glass hospital doors at the concerned nurses who watched them and gossiped amongst themselves.

A crazy look entered Elena’s eyes as a cold resolve settled inside her.

“Elena, calm down,” David said in an effort to settle things amicably.

“Oh, I am calm.” Elena whispered in a deathly quiet voice as she walked slowly towards him

“You are going to take this ring back, and we are going to walk out of this room with big smiles on our faces like a regular couple expecting a new baby,”

Fear flashed briefly in David’s eyes as he reluctantly took the ring back from Elena’s outstretched palm.

Elena’s yes flashed and her legs tapped a staccato as the Doctor came in to discharge her.

True to Elena’s words, Rlena and David said a cheerful goodbye to the nurses and drove home in silence, doing what Elena did best. Pretending.

*******

“Are you okay?” Elena’s phone chimed with a text from Evangeline and she sighed as she typed back a quick reply.

“I’m fine. We’re fine,”

She glanced at the empty spot beside her on the bed with a sad face. David had opted to sleep in the guest room.

“Okay then, good night!” Evangelyn’s text came in and Elena smiled sadly as she dropped her phone and tried her best to sleep.

*****

The next morning, Elena dragged herself out of bed, determined to do damage control and save her marriage.

She wrapped a robe around her body and walked down the stairs to find David and continue her charade.

David was fully dressed and drinking a cup of coffee in the kitchen when Elena arrived.

“Good morning." Elena greeted David with a small smile as she moved about the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea.

“Good morning. Here you go,” David replied quietly as he handed Elena an envelope.

“Did you get me something?” Elena smiled a deluded pleased smile as she took the envelope from him and opened it up.

David walked out of the kitchen silently.

Elena frowned slightly at his rudeness and brought out the contents of the envelope.

Her hands shook badly as she read the headline in the papers.

She stared in fear as she looked inside the envelope again, and sure enough, David’s wedding ring was inside.

“What the hell David!” Elena yelled angrily as she stomped to meet David in the living room.

David was about to open the front door and leave for work when she held onto his arm and pulled him back forcefully.

“What the hell is this?!” She deadpanned as she waved the already signed divorce papers in front of his face.

“Divorce papers, Elena,” David replied tiredly, running his fingers through his hair.

Elena's heart raced. "What do you mean? How can you casually bring up divorce when we've been married for five years? Do you need me to remind you that I'm carrying your baby?" Her anger erupted in tears.

"Elena, grow up! I'm done with this marriage, and the child won't make me stay," David said sternly, attempting to move Elena aside.

"I don't care. I'm not raising OUR child in a broken home. Here! This is what I think of your stupid divorce papers!" Elena yelled, sobbing as she tore the divorce papers to shreds.

A knock at the door startled the couple as Elena angrily wiped at her tears while breathing heavily.

"I'll just print some more," David hissed in irritation.

“David, don’t– “ A knock sounded at the door again, and David roughly pushed Elena aside.

“Aaargh! “Elena curved into a fetal position as she crashed to the floor with a yell, and pain exploded behind her eyes.

She heard the sound of the door unlocking and looked up to see David smiling and Chelsea at the door.

“You!” Elena swore under her breath as she stared in anger at Chelsea and pushed herself to a seating position.

"Good morning, darling." Chelsea kissed David on the lips and gave Elena a triumphant look.

“Let’s go to work,” David replied as his hand encircled Chelsea’s waist.

Work? Pain crawled up in Elena as she realized David was taking his whore to her company.

Her hand clutched her stomach in pain as David and Chelsea walked away from the house leaving the door ajar.
