Chapter 3
Elena winced as she pushed herself to her feet and staggered to shut the front door.Slowly, she made her way to her bedroom upstairs. She had a good idea about what was happening but needed to see the evidence with her own eyes to believe it.Earlier last year, when her relationship had begun to sour, Elena had noticed that David’s hand-written correspondence had grown more frequent, but she deluded herself into thinking that everything was fine. Now, Elena went straight for the shoebox she had noticed him messing around with a few times. She sobbed bitterly as she uncovered the shoebox and confirmed her worst fears. David and Chelsea had been in constant communication for two years.Elena sat on the floor of her closet, surrounded by David’s letters, as she picked up her phone and called her sister."Hey, what’s up?" Evangeline’s cheery voice came from the end of the line as she picked up the phone.Elena took a deep breath and shut her eyes. "I’m pregnant,""Wait, what? Back up. You're pregnant?!" Elena pulled the phone from her ear as Evangeline’s scream threatened to burst her eardrum.“Yes. Yes, I am." Elena opened her eyes and blinked as silent tears rolled down her cheeks.“That’s great! That’s good!” “Right?” Evangeline’s excitement waned as Elena burst into tears.“Chelsea is back, Eva. He’s cheating and served me divorce papers."Shit! That motherfucker!” The sound of movements came through the line “I’m on my way,”******************Elena sat at the dining table, wishing she could drown her sorrows in a glass of wine. She frowned as she nursed her glass of orange juice and looked at the scattered letters across the table.David might not have been physically cheating, but he had been emotionally cheating for two years. In his letters to Chelsea, she discovered that he had made all these plans and had even signed the divorce papers six months prior. He just waited until Chelsea was out of jail to serve them.Elena let out a deep sigh as she stared at the evidence of her tattered marriage, unsure about her next actions.Just then, the doorbell rang, and Elena trudged to open the door for her sister with a heavy heart."Hey Lena, I’m here. Everything’s going to be perfectly fine," Evangeline enveloped her sister in a tight hug the moment Elena opened the door.“I I… Just– “ Elena stepped back from the hug and shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts.“No. Don’t stress or overthink. It’s bad for the baby." Evangeline shut the door behind her, and together the sisters stepped over the shredded pieces of the divorce papers on the floor and went to the dining table.*********"I’m going to kill him," Evangeline whispered in a shaky voice as she threw down the last letter dated a few days before Chelsea had been released."No. You would do no such thing." Elena waved her hand absentmindedly."Have you gone mad? Will you really defend him even after all this?" Evangeline hissed in irritation."I’m not going to let that demon tramp destroy my family and steal my happiness." Elena sighed deeply. "David is still my husband, and he would remain so. My child will not be fatherless."“You’re joking, right?” Evangeline stared at her sister in shock and confusion. “Don’t tell me you intend to fight for that douchebag.”“Evangeline, he’s my husband and I can’t let Chelsea— ““No! Elena,” Evangeline yelled in frustration “You’re not a child anymore, and this is not college. You can’t keep competing for things with Chelsea!"But Elena had already gotten the idea in her head, and there was no stopping her. She got up from her chair and made her way up to her bedroom.“He’s my husband, not hers,” Elena mumbled stubbornly."This is not the same as fighting over grades. David is a real person with choices! A shitty person, I might add." Evangeline trailed up the stairs behind Elena, trying to convince her."Well, newsflash. That shitty person is my husband, and I’m carrying his baby. So no! I’m not letting her have him," Elena angrily spun around to face Evangeline.“You’re crazy! Absolutely crazy,” Evangeline shook her head in disbelief as Elena entered her bedroom and she followed behind.“I don’t care. I’m getting him back,” Elena marched into her closet and began to throw out clothes.“What are you doing? Do you even have a plan?” Evangeline groaned in defeat."I’m going back to my company. I won’t let David bring that woman in while I stay back at home" Elena threw Evangeline a nervous smile as she held up a suit to her frame in front of a full length mirror.A sad smile graced Evangeline’s lips. “That’s the only sensible thing I’ve heard you say all day,”“Are you helping or not?” Elena asked, too tired to be snappy with her sister.****The sisters worked silently, and one hour later, Elena was ready.Dressed in a stylish blue suit, Elena felt like an imposter. As she gazed at her reflection in the mirror, she could hardly recognize the woman looking back at her.The confident, successful businesswoman she once was seemed like a distant memory."You look breathtaking," Evangeline whispered reassuringly."Thank you, my love. See you later," Elena responded with a fake smile.Evangeline squeezed Elena’s shoulder in understanding as she picked up her purse from the couch.“Let’s go,”The two sisters left the house separately.********** Elena’s heels clicked loudly on the floor as she confidently walked straight through the office reception to the elevator. She could hear the shocked whispers and tried not to notice as several of the staff who recognized her whispered amongst themselves. As the elevator door shut on Elena, she let out a sigh of relief. Glad to be out of scrutinizing eyes. She pressed the button for the third floor and waited as the elevator began it’s ascent. The elevator doors opened, and as Elena stepped out in a hurry, she crashed into a hard chest, sending papers flying to the ground around her."Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry," Elena blushed crimson as she bent to help the nice-looking man pick up his papers."No, no, it’s fine," Marcel replied, smiling softly at Elena. For a second, they both stood still, smiling at each other."I’m Marcel," he spoke up first, breaking the silence. "I’m new here, but I haven’t seen your face around here at all. Are you new here too?""No, no, far from that," Elena replied quickly. "I actually built this place up from scratch, “But my husband, David, runs the place; I’m not here very often,"“You’re Mrs Elena Windsor? Lena Beauty was named after you!” Marcel smiled brightly as Elena blushed in embarrassment."Yeah, thank you, I’m looking for a very nice, cozy office, and I think that will do," she said, pointing at an office at the end of the hall."Well, you’re in luck. My office is right next to it," Marcel replied, beaming. With a warm smile, he offered to help her set up her new office.Elena accepted, and they quickly formed a connection. Elena couldn’t remember the last time she had a hearty conversation with someone about random topics and nothing in particular..****Elena had barely settled into her new office when David stormed in angrily."What are you doing here?!" David yelled angrily as soon as he entered the office."What do you mean?" Elena rolled her eyes and continued to set up her account. In truth, she was insecure about returning to work but really hoped it would impress David."Elena, I am very busy and do not have the time for your tantrums; please leave," David said angrily.Elena’s heart sank as she saw the anger on his face. "David, I-""No explanations. Leave," he commanded her angrily.“But you bought— ““Elena!” David growled angrily “I said LEAVE!”With tear-filled eyes and shaky hands, Elena picked up her bag. David watched as she shamefully exited her office. As she walked towards her car, she couldn’t shake off the feeling that she had let herself down once again.“Thank you,” Elena whispered to the valet as she got into her car and shut her eyes, trying her best to blink away her tears so she could focus on driving. She pulled onto the highway, oblivious to a car that was coming towards her. Once she caught sight of it, she hit her brakes quickly so she could stop. But her brakes had gone numb; they weren’t responding to her, and her car was still moving very fast towards the car..Panic consumed Elena as she hit her brakes repeatedly, to no avail. The screeching sound of tires filled the air as she swerved and tried to avoid colliding with the other vehicle.A loud scream tore from Elena’s throat as her car spiralled out of control.Chapter 4She barely noticed the other driver swerving out of the way before her car went careening into a pole. Her car came to a halt with a loud thud, and Elena hissed in pain as her head banged against the steering wheel.Everything went black for a few seconds and Elena came around to the sound of a man’s voice."Are you okay, ma'am?" Elena vaguely heard the man call for the paramedics to arrive at the scene of the accident.Elena blinked in confusion at the man as the ringing noise in her head began to quiet down. "Yeah," she groaned in pain. "I'm okay. Please just help me out," she replied as she tried to unhook her seatbelt."Okay, here, let me just-" the man agreed, as he opened the car door and attempted to release her jammed seatbelt."I'm sorry, I think it's jammed," the man frowned as he tried repeatedly to unlock her seatbelt. The clicking noise made Elena's head ring, so she stopped the man's hand with hers."Thank you, Mr...?" Elena inquired."Parker. I'm Mr. Parker. I
Chapter 5Car Procedural Checkup Brakes condition —cut wires. Her brakes had been cut! Elena gasped, walked back into the house and shut the door in fear. She knew her car had been in pristine condition before the accident but had never considered that her accident had been intentional.Only one person had everything to gain from Elena’s death—- Chelsea. With anger rushing through her, Elena flung the report on the dining table and marched up to her room.If Chelsea wanted war, she would give her war!She still had five percent of her shares. She had a shot at a less-than-pathetic ending. ******The next morning, Elena drove her second car and pulled in front of her company. She picked up her phone and shot her sister a quick text.Hey Eva, I’m at the office right now. Something happened and we need to catch up.Leave the evidence at home and just come to the office. It’s time to put an end to this madness.Elena’s skin prickled in embarrassment as she walked into the company. Rumou
Elena could barely remember anything as she half ran and half jumped out of the Uber. “No no no no no no,” She cried frantically as she dropped to her knees and crawled towards her car where she could see Evangelyn’s blood pooled beneath the overturned car. “Hey pull her back, it’s gonna blow,” Elena vaguely heard someone say as she felt a strong arm grab hold of her midriff. “No! My sister. My sister’s in there!” Elena screamed as she thrashed against the arm that held her but the person was firm. “Please, please,” Elena begged as she sobbed mercilessly. She tried kicking the person to go to Evangelyn. She couldn’t see her sister, but she was certain she was frightened. “You can’t go, the car’s going to blow,” The person holding her explained in pity as he hauled her back a few more steps. “What?” Elena whispered as her mind went blank. “I said the car-” Just then, the car exploded with a loud sound as blasting heat hit Elena and she fainted. The Uber driver who was holding th
Chapter 7 The next morning, Elena sat weeping softly as she stared at her knees. Everything semed so surreal and she could barely believe her sister was gone. “Hey,” Marcel said with a knock as he stepped into the room. Elena tried to wipe her face quickly but Marcel had already noticed her crying. The previous night after promising to help Elena, he had gone home to sleep and returned the next day. When he arrived, Marcel went straight to the doctor’s office to get Elena discharged and sign all her paperwork. “You’re crying again,” Marcel said softly as he sidled up to her bedside. “Yeah, I seem to be doing a lot of that lateyl,” Elena chuckled humorlessly. “Elena,” Marcel said softly as he held her hands and squeezed it. “I’m fine,” She said as she shook herhead to clear the thoughts that had haunted her all night long. “No, you’re not,” “It’s just. I guess after everything that happened. Some part of me hoped that David would come see me in the hospital. I mean, he’s my ne
Chapter 8Elena walked into the company building with renewed Virgor. She was about to carry out the plan that had been stewing in her mind all night long and she couldn’t help but feel slight excitement. They walked into the company together but while Marcel took the elevator to his office, Elena took the stairs. She was trying to avoid being seen by another person as much as possible. Her plan depended on David’s ignorance about her presence in the company. Elena climbed to the fifth floor where David’s office was, as briskly as she could. After being married to him for five years, she knew David’s timetable and knew he was not present in the office. She stood behind the stairway door and peeped through a small crack in the door. Elena smiled a bit as she saw David’s secretary sitting at her desk. The girl had always been a simpleton so it was pretty easy for Elena to fool her. Elena knew she didn’t have much time so she quickly but quietly retrieved her phone from her jeans p
Chapter 9Adrenaline surged through Elena’s veins as her survival instincts kicked in. She quickly evaded the impending blow as she scrambled out of the chair narrowly missing David’s attack. “What the fuck is wrong with you!” Elena screamed in terror as David crashed into the desk in surprise. She didn’t wait to get a reply from him and leaned forward to tap the enter button on the mouse for the video transfer to begin. David righted himself and grabbed Elena’s hand aggressively as she tried to pull away. “I’ve had enough of you!” David growled in anger as she slapped Wlena across her face. Elena went crashing into the table from the impact of the blow. Her vision swam, and she gripped the edge of the table with her hands as she used it as support to get back to her feet. “You killed my sister. I’m going to ruin you,” Elena swore in a low voice as the monitor began to beep and ‘TRANSFER COMPLETE’ flashed across the screen. David looked to the monitor as the truth of what Elen
Chapter 10Evangelyn’s living room was the first sign that someone had gotten to the house before them. It was in disarray with pillows strewn about, the contents of the cabinets littered on the floor, and some of the sofas ripped open. Tears filled Elena’s eyes as she stepped in. The smell of her sister was still fresh and enveloped her as she walked deeper into the house with Marcel trailing her softly. “They came here. I don’t know how they knew Evangelyn had something on them but David and his bitch came here,” Elena said to Marcel with her eyes flashing as they stepped into the kitchen and surveyed even greater damage. All of Evangelyn’s things had been thrashed in an effort to find whatever evidence she might have been keeping for Elena. “Do you think they got the document?” Marcel asked in defeat as he looked around at the seemingly hopeless situation. “No. They couldn’t have. The hiding spot is secure and only Evangelyn and I know where it is,” Elena replied with a shake o
CHAPTER 11Marcel! Marcel!” Elena called out in terror as she hurriedly looked around the kitchen and the living room, but Marcel wasn’t there. Fear overtook Elena’s mind as the sounds of the police coming out of their cars and conversing amongst themselves hit her. “He probably went out to confirm if there was any problem,” Elena muttered to herself in panic as she tried to make sense of the present situation. Elena’s adrenaline rose, she panted and paced about the base of the staircase in utter confusion and fear. She knew the news was fake, but only two other people knew the truth. Her dead sister Evangelyn, who was no longer in the picture, and Marcel, who was surprisingly nowhere to be found. “Marcel!” She yelled out for the last time, hoping that he had gone up the stairs and would hear the sound of her voice, but her call was met with silence, and in a split second decision, she decided to save herself first. From the side of her vision, she saw the policemen making their
