Chapter Three: The Trap Beneath Silk

By evening, the Carter estate no longer felt peaceful.

It felt like a chessboard.

Elaine Carter sat at her desk, a file open in front of her, though her eyes hadn’t moved across the pages in minutes. The golden light from the setting sun stretched across the room, catching the edges of polished wood and turning everything deceptively warm.

Deceptive.

Just like Lily.

Elaine tapped her finger lightly against the paper, her mind replaying the timeline she remembered so clearly. In her past life, this was the week everything began to tilt out of her favor. Small inconsistencies. Missing numbers. Subtle errors in financial statements that she had been too distracted—too trusting—to question.

And by the time she noticed, it had been too late.

This time, she would not be late.

A quiet knock broke her thoughts.

“Miss Elaine,” a servant said, stepping in slightly. “Master Carter has called for you in his study.”

Elaine’s eyes flickered.

Already?

That was earlier than she expected.

Interesting.

“I’ll be there shortly,” she replied, closing the file gently.

As the door shut behind the servant, Elaine stood up slowly, smoothing her dress. Her reflection in the mirror caught her attention again—not out of vanity, but awareness.

In her previous life, she had walked into that study unprepared.

Nervous.

Defensive.

Blind.

Tonight, she walked in armed with knowledge.

And that changed everything.

The study smelled of leather and authority.

Elaine stepped inside, her heels clicking softly against the wooden floor. Her father stood near the desk, his posture rigid, his expression unreadable.

And of course—

Lily was already there.

Seated elegantly, as if she belonged, her face composed with just the right amount of concern.

Elaine almost smiled.

Right on schedule.

“Father,” Elaine greeted calmly.

“Elaine,” he said, his voice measured. “Sit down.”

She did, her movements graceful, controlled. Not once did she glance at Lily—not yet.

Let her wait.

“I’ve been reviewing some recent financial reports,” her father began, sliding a document across the desk. “There are… irregularities.”

There it was.

Elaine picked up the document, scanning it slowly. Every number, every discrepancy—she already knew them. She had memorized this moment from the pain it once caused.

In her past life, her hands had shaken.

Now, they were steady.

“I see,” she said quietly.

Lily shifted slightly, her voice soft but carefully placed. “I didn’t want to say anything at first, Father, but I thought it was important you knew. I noticed some unusual approvals… under Elaine’s name.”

Elaine lifted her gaze—finally.

Their eyes met.

And in that moment, something changed.

Lily expected hesitation.

Confusion.

Maybe even panic.

What she saw instead… was calm.

Too calm.

Elaine tilted her head slightly, almost curious. “You noticed?”

The question was simple.

But the tone wasn’t.

Lily paused.

Just for a second.

“Yes,” she replied, recovering. “I was worried something might be wrong.”

Of course you were, Elaine thought.

Worried things wouldn’t go exactly as planned.

Elaine turned her attention back to the document, flipping a page. “These approvals…” she said slowly, “are indeed under my name.”

Her father’s expression darkened slightly.

But Elaine continued before he could speak.

“But they weren’t made by me.”

Silence.

Lily’s fingers tightened almost invisibly in her lap.

“Elaine,” her father said, his tone firm, “this is a serious accusation. These documents carry your authorization code.”

“I’m aware,” Elaine replied evenly.

She placed the papers down and looked directly at him.

“Which is exactly why I had someone review the system logs this afternoon.”

That did it.

Lily’s composure cracked—just slightly.

Elaine caught it.

And pressed forward.

“The approvals were made using my credentials,” Elaine continued, “but not from my usual workstation. They were accessed remotely.”

Her father frowned. “Remotely?”

“Yes,” Elaine nodded. “From within the estate.”

The room grew colder.

Elaine didn’t look at Lily yet.

Not until the very last moment.

“And more specifically,” she added softly, “from a secondary terminal.”

Now she turned.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Her eyes locked onto Lily’s.

“The one in your wing.”

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Lily stared at her, the softness gone from her expression, replaced—just for a flicker—by something sharper. Something dangerous.

But it vanished quickly.

“You can’t be serious,” Lily said, her voice almost trembling. “Why would I do something like that?”

There it is, Elaine thought.

The performance.

Perfectly timed.

Elaine leaned back slightly in her chair, her gaze steady. “That’s a good question.”

Her father looked between them, tension building in his posture. “Elaine, do you have proof of this?”

Elaine didn’t rush her answer.

That was the key difference now.

Control.

“I have partial logs,” she said carefully. “Enough to show the access point, but not enough to confirm who was physically present.”

Lily’s shoulders relaxed—barely.

Elaine noticed.

You thought I’d come unprepared… but not completely prepared.

That was intentional.

A trap didn’t need to close all at once.

Sometimes, it worked better when it tightened slowly.

“But,” Elaine continued, her tone shifting slightly, “I’ve also requested a full system audit. It should be completed by tomorrow.”

Now—

That landed.

Lily’s eyes flickered.

Just for a second.

Fear.

Gone as quickly as it appeared.

But Elaine saw it.

And that was enough.

“I think that would be wise,” her father said, his voice heavy. “Until then, no conclusions will be drawn.”

“Of course,” Elaine replied smoothly.

Lily stood abruptly, her composure returning in polished layers. “Father, I would never—”

“I know,” he interrupted gently. “That’s why we’ll wait for clarity.”

But the doubt had already been planted.

And doubt…

Was all Elaine needed.

That night, Elaine stood on her balcony, the cool air brushing against her skin.

Below, the estate slept peacefully.

Above, the stars burned quietly.

Elaine closed her eyes for a moment, letting the silence settle.

Then she exhaled slowly.

“That’s one move,” she whispered.

Not a victory.

Not yet.

But a shift.

In her past life, this was where she began to lose everything.

Now?

This was where she began to take it back.

Her fingers curled slightly against the railing, her gaze sharpening as she looked into the distance.

“Lily Carter…”

Her voice was soft.

But it carried weight now.

“You wanted to play in the shadows.”

A faint smile touched her lips.

“Then let’s see how well you survive when the light starts creeping in.”

Because this time—

Elaine wasn’t just defending herself.

She was hunting.

And the game had only just begun.
