The slam of the chamber doors cracked through the silence like thunder.

Serina jolted, the book in her lap slipping from her fingers. She turned and froze.

Damien stood framed in the doorway, his cloak trailing like a shadow, his eyes burning with a fury so sharp it seemed to cut the air itself.

He did not speak at once. He simply stared, as if pinning her in place by will alone. When he finally stepped forward, the heavy thud of his boots carried the weight of judgment.

“You went to him.”

Serina’s throat tightened. “I..i…i”

“Don’t lie.” His voice was cold, precise, each word a blade. “My eyes follow every step you take. Do you think the Prime Minister could summon you in secret without me knowing?”

Her heart pounded, but she forced herself to meet his gaze. “Then you already know why.”

His hand shot out, seizing her wrist, yanking her to her feet. His grip was iron, unyielding, the fury in his eyes caged by the barest shred of control.

“You walked willingly into the serpent’s den,” D

For a moment, silence stretched between us, filled only by the whisper of distant wind through the halls. I studied him, the set of his jaw, the quiet fire in his eyes. He was not pleading for the realm. He was pleading for me.A dangerous line.“I will survive,” I said at last, my tone as smooth as steel. “Not by striking blindly, but by waiting. Aria will trip on her own web. Damien will choke on his desperation. The serpents will reveal their fangs, and the Prime Minister his hunger. When they do, I will not need to lift my sword. I will only need to watch.”Cassian stepped closer, close enough that the torchlight caught the silver threads in his dark hair. “And if you misjudge? If their bite reaches you first?”I tilted my chin, meeting his gaze unflinchingly. “Then you will do what you always do, Cassian. Catch the blade before it strikes.”For the first time, his composure faltered, his eyes flickering with something unspoken. He looked away, as though distance could erase the w

Aria’s steps were lighter these days. She no longer walked with the hesitance of a wounded girl. Her veil remained, yes, and her smiles were soft, trembling at the edges. But her eyes… her eyes betrayed her. They no longer sought pity. They searched for an advantage.I noticed how she lingered near the council chambers, pretending to lose her way.In the way she asked subtle questions of servants about shipments, guards, and supplies. In the way her silences now seemed measured, deliberate, as though every word left unspoken was meant to be considered later.Something had shifted. She had found a hand to hold or perhaps a serpent to coil around her.One evening, as I walked the gallery overlooking the training yard, Cassian fell into step beside me. His presence, as always, felt both shield and shadow.“You watch her too closely,” he murmured.“I would be blind not to,” I replied. Below us, guards sparred with wooden swords, the clang of practice echoing through the yard. “Her bruise

Gasps rippled through the hall.“Oh, poor child…”“…she still bears the mark…”“…and yet she comes…”She lowered her eyes demurely as she stepped inside, two ladies trailing behind her like attendants. Her movements were slow and careful, as though each step carried the weight of suffering. She did not seek the center of the room, but the effect was the same: every gaze turned, every whisper stirred.Damien stiffened at my side. His jaw clenched, his hand tightening painfully around my arm.“She dares,” he muttered under his breath.Of course, she dared.Aria did not need to raise her voice. She did not need to accuse. Her silence screamed louder than any outburst. Every glance at her bruise, every sigh from sympathetic lips, was an indictment against him.I moved from Damien’s side, my steps measured, my smile serene. When I reached Aria, I inclined my head just so. “Sister. how brave of you to join us.”Her eyes lifted, shining with unshed tears, her voice trembling sweetly. “I coul

Damien’s study was dark when I entered, lit only by the glow of the hearth. Shadows clung to the carved shelves and heavy drapes, suffocating the air with the scent of smoke and spiced wine.He stood by the fire, goblet in hand, his posture rigid, his eyes bloodshot.“You think I don’t see it?” he said without turning.I closed the door quietly behind me. “See what?”“The way they look at you.” His voice was low, strained, threaded with something raw. “The way they whisper your name instead of mine. At the banquet, in council, even tonight with the poison. It’s always you they remember. They always praise you. …” His hand tightened on the goblet until the glass cracked. “..Only you they fear.”I moved slowly across the room, my gown brushing against the rug. “They whisper because you give them cause. They fear because you give them reason. I only soothe what you inflame.”At that, he turned sharply, his face flushed with fury. “Do not dress treachery in silk, Serina. You undermine me

The Prime Minister’s smile sharpened. “Instability is a gentle term. Madness would be more fitting. The nobles tire of his rages, his blood-soaked displays. They seek order. They seek a future.”He stepped closer, his eyes gleaming. “And I intend to give it to them.”I replaced the letter, folding my hands calmly. “And where does Aria fit into your vision?”His expression flickered, just slightly. “Ah. So you have heard.”“Whispers,” I said smoothly. “That she weeps in her chambers, yes… but also that she writes letters. Reaching for sympathy. For power.”He inclined his head, almost in admiration. “Indeed. She has sent word to certain houses. Appeals for aid. A wounded bird begging to be sheltered. Some fools pity her. Others see her as a tool a way to strike at Damien without facing him directly.”“And you?” I asked. “Do you see her as a tool?”His smile was razor-thin. “I see her as a child playing with daggers. Dangerous enough to cut herself… but not to wound me.”I allowed mysel

“Traitors,” he spat, his voice carrying across the courtyard. “They feed the serpents while we starve. They conspire against me, against us all. And what is the price of treachery?”The guards shifted uneasily, their hands tightening on their spears. A small crowd had gathered servants, lesser nobles, even children peering from balconies above.Damien drew his sword with a rasping ring.“The price,” he thundered, “is blood.”He raised the blade high.“Stop.”The word cut through the air, calm, commanding. All heads turned.I stepped forward, my gown sweeping across the stones, the chill biting at my skin. I did not raise my voice I did not need to. Silence followed me like a loyal hound.“Damien,” I said, my tone smooth as silk, “you stand not as executioner, but as duke. Do not lower yourself to a butcher’s hand.”His gaze snapped to me, fire clashing with ice. “They are guilty!”“Then let the council confirm it,” I countered, stepping closer until I stood beside him on the steps. “
