The first scream cut through the music like a blade.

Then came the fire.

Flames burst from the merchant stalls, orange light devouring silks and timber. Smoke thickened, swallowing laughter, turning joy to chaos. From the alleys, masked figures surged blades flashing, serpent tattoos glinting on their skin.

“Serpents!” a guard cried. “The serpents are here!”

The square erupted into madness. Nobles shrieked, servants fled, children wept. Guards scrambled, their lines broken by the sudden onslaught.

And Damien?

I found him at the edge of the chaos, pale, his hand trembling on his sword but never lifting it. His eyes darted wildly, his lips parted in disbelief. “Not here… not now…” he muttered, retreating step by step.

He was paralyzed.

The duke, frozen while his people bled.

Something inside me hardened.

If he would not stand, then I would.

I stepped into the square, the heat of fire licking at my gown, the screams piercing my ears. My voice rang out above the chaos, sharp as steel.

The palace had grown quieter since the council session, but it was not the quiet of peace. It was the quiet of eyes watching from shadows.Whispers trailed behind me wherever I walked. Some carried admiration, “the duchess speaks with fire” …others, suspicion, “too bold, too proud.” But none ignored me. For the first time, I was not invisible in my own halls. And that made me a target. It began with small things.A missing key in the kitchen. A letter from the western garrison that never reached my desk. Guards who swore they had received orders I never gave.Individually, each was nothing. Together, they formed a pattern.A pattern I had seen before in the serpent faction’s tactics outside the walls. Now the venom had seeped in.Cassian found me in the northern corridor, where the sunlight struck stained glass and painted the floor in shards of crimson and gold. He leaned against the wall, arms crossed, his expression sharp.“You’ve noticed it too,” he said without preamble.I met hi

The council chamber had always felt suffocating. Its heavy oak doors, high-arched ceilings, and tapestries of battles fought long before any of us were born were meant to inspire awe and remind all who entered that power was ancient, eternal, beyond the reach of mortal hands. But power was not in the stone walls or painted banners. It was in the eyes that turned toward me as I crossed the threshold.Every noble, every minister, every guard present felt it, shift subtle as a whisper yet heavy as a storm. They did not rise for Damien. They rose for me.I wore no crown, only the silver circlet Countess Miriel had gifted me. It was simple, save for the garnet that caught the light like a drop of blood. But I saw how their gazes lingered on it, how even silence seemed to bend beneath its weight.Damien noticed too.He sat slouched at the head of the long table, a goblet already half-empty in his hand. His eyes were bloodshot, his smile too wide. “My lords, my ladies,” he drawled, his voice

And when the time came, when the ashes of Damien’s ruin settled, when Aria’s venom dried, when the serpents scattered and the Prime Minister overreached…Then I would not simply be a duchess.I would be queen.A queen crowned not by love, not by pity, not by men’s permission. But by fire.…….The council met in uneasy silence. The air smelled faintly of smoke from the last serpent attack, and tension hung thicker than the incense in the braziers.Nobles shuffled parchments they barely read, their eyes darting not to Damien, who sat hunched, glaring, drink-stained but to me.The Prime Minister spoke with his usual calm, his words steady as stone. “Trade weakens at the borders. Farmers complain of tithes they cannot meet. The people grow restless. Stability is required.”His eyes slid toward me. The room shifted with them.”….I wonder what game is on now”.Damien slammed his goblet against the table, wine spilling across the wood. “You speak as though I have no command, Minister. Do you

The words carried through corridors, over banquet tables, even in the kitchens where servants scrubbed soot from their hands. And though I never encouraged them, I never silenced them either. It was time.I began with the guards. Those who had stood beside me in the square, who had bled under my orders, who had seen me strike down serpents with my own hand. Their loyalty was already leaning. I only had to anchor it.In the training yard, I walked among them as they drilled. Their salutes were sharp, their eyes alight.“You fought with honor,” I told them, my voice carrying. “When shadows threatened to swallow our city, you stood firm. Remember this: a blade obeys the hand it trusts. And I trust you.”Their captain bowed deeply, his voice fierce. “And we trust you, my lady. To the last breath.”The oath was not shouted. It was whispered. But whispers are stronger than shouts when spoken in unison.Next came the nobles.I invited them not to the council hall, where Damien raged, but to

Whispers of failure.Whispers of betrayal.Whispers that never once named Damien as savior.I stood at the center of the ruin, my arm bound with linen, my gown torn, my face streaked with ash. Around me, guards formed new lines, their eyes fixed not on their duke but on me. Their loyalty had shifted, and the hall itself seemed to feel it.I gave quiet orders, my voice steady. “See to the wounded first. Secure the gates, no one enters or leaves without command. Post double patrols along the eastern wing.”The men obeyed without hesitation. Even the most seasoned captains bent their heads, their movements swift and sure. And Damien? He watched, his eyes burning, his hand clenched on his sword hilt as though it were the only thing keeping him upright. When the last body was carried away, when the nobles drifted back to their chambers with pale faces and restless eyes, he finally spoke.“You enjoyed it,” he hissed.I turned slowly, my brow arching. “Enjoy what?”“Being their savior.” His

The palace was meant to be impenetrable. Its walls rose high, its gates reinforced with iron, its halls patrolled day and night. But walls are only as strong as the shadows within them, and shadows are where serpents thrive. The attack came during supper. The great hall was filled with the clatter of goblets and the hum of uneasy conversation. Nobles feigned laughter, but the air carried the weight of blood spilled in the streets and whispers that would not die.Damien sat at the head, his eyes dull with drink, his voice too loud as he boasted of punishments yet to come. Few listened. Most eyes flicked to me.I felt it before it began, the prickle of unease, the unnatural hush between heartbeats. Then came the scream.A servant collapsed near the wine casks, a dagger buried in his throat. From the shadows of the hall, masked figures surged serpents, their blades flashing in torchlight.Chaos erupted.Nobles shrieked, scattering behind tables. Guards scrambled, their lines broken in th
