ZOE'S POV

It was a quiet morning. I was at the window, watching the dawn break.

I hadn’t really slept. I kept thinking about Owen. He seemed to have wanted to say something when he came to see me yesterday. I saw it in the way he struggled to find words. He was holding back. He always did when it came to me.

And I missed him.

Not just Owen himself, but the way he always looked out for me, how he always made me feel protected.

I wished I could tell him the truth about my memories returning. But I couldn’t—not yet. Not until I knew what to do with them.

That was when the sirens broke the silence.

At first, I thought they would fade past. But then they slowed, and the sound thickened, echoing against the walls of our compound. My heart sank.

Jamie walked into the living room rubbing his eyes, with the lights flashing around us.

The knock on the door was sharp.

When Austin opened it, the officers stepped inside with a certainty that made my heart clench.

“Mr. Perkins,” one of them said

AUSTIN’S POV “It's over, Austin.” Zoe said firmly. Her words took my breath away. The room seemed to close in, I felt like I was being crushed. The whole time I thought Owen was turning her against me, feeling her head with lies. But her look cut me to the bone.“No” I shook my head, protesting. “You can't do that. You can't just walk away from me. From us. We have a son, Zoe. A family. You can’t just throw that away.”She didn’t flinch. Her calmness was scarier than anger.“Think about Jamie. He’s seven, Zoe. Seven. He needs stability. He needs his mother and father together, not watching them rip each other apart. You really want to tear his world in half?”Still silence. Her arms folded, her shoulders squared. That silence mocked me, tore at me.I pushed harder, desperation rising. “Everything I’ve done was for him. For us. Yes, I made mistakes but it was to protect this family. To give Jamie what he deserves.”“You think Owen cares about him? He doesn’t. I’ve always been there si

AUSTIN’S POV I didn’t sleep. I couldn’t. By morning, I was already pacing my study while the house still slept. Zoe walked out on me last night as if the idea of being close to me was unbearable—it gnawed at me. Every excuse she gave, every hesitation, they weren’t about recovery. They were about him.Owen.I knew it. I could feel it.And then it hit me—work. Zoe had insisted she couldn’t take time away because of work. Was it just an excuse to see him?The thought made my jaw clench.By noon, I couldn’t take it anymore. I drove to the office, telling myself it was just to “check in.” To see how she was doing. But deep down, I already knew what I was looking for—proof. Proof that my instincts were right. And I got it.As I stepped off the elevator, I saw through the glass walls of her office. Zoe wasn’t alone.Owen was standing close to her desk, leaning in. And she… she didn’t push him away. She let him. And then, my blood went ice cold. She kissed him back.It wasn’t an accident

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    The Guarded Distance

AUSTIN’S POV “Chloe came by the office today,” Zoe said calmly, as if she was reading off a memo. “She’s out. On probation.” I’ve been expecting Chloe’s release, probation was inevitable after how the trial played out. But not this soon. She was supposed to be tied up in paperwork, supervision checks, something that gave me more time. Instead, Zoe was the one to tell me Chloe had already shown up at her office.I leaned back in my chair. “She came to you already?” I asked, careful to keep my voice measured. “Why? What did she say?”Zoe hesitated, then shrugged. “Nothing important. But the fact she showed up at all proves she’s not done. Which is why we can’t let our guard down. Not even with her on probation. She could still try to make a move again, to get back at you since you’re the one who got her arrested and imprisoned.”I nodded, hiding my frustration. I should’ve kept an eye on Chloe as soon as she was released. That slip wouldn’t happen again. But what disturbed me more was

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Her Old Ghost

ZOE'S POV Chloe closed the door with a snap, the room felt lighter without her stress. I sat back, heart still racing.“She shouldn’t even be out this soon,” I murmured. “Probation or not… she’s dangerous, Owen.”Owen leaned against my desk, his arms folded. “She’s out on borrowed time, Zoe. One wrong move, and she’ll be thrown right back in. She knows that. She wouldn’t risk it.”I shook my head, pursing my lips. “You don’t know her like I do. Trouble is like oxygen for Chloe. Even if it suffocates her, she’ll keep breathing it in.”His expression eased as he looked at me. “Then I'll take care of her if she causes trouble.”I wanted to trust him, but I felt even more uneasy. “I just want her to leave me alone. To leave us alone.”Owen’s jaw flexed, his eyes turned serious. “She will. Chloe doesn’t scare me, Zoe—not anymore. And she doesn’t get to control you. Not again.”I felt steady from the firmness in his tone. I glanced at the door and sighed.CHLOE'S POV As soon as I was out

  • RIGHTFULLY MINE    Shadows of Suspicion

CHLOE'S POV The metal anklet pinched my skin as the officer fastened it in. An electronic leash. A reminder that even in freedom, I was still caged. But still—I hadn’t thought I’d breathe fresh air this soon. I’d played my cards right, struck a deal, and now here I was, walking out earlier than anyone expected. Two birds with one stone. Early release, and Austin ruined.I still smiled thinking about how I told Owen everything about Austin’s little secret. He thought he was above it all but all it took was a small push at the right time. Let him squirm now.I stepped outside, the bright sunlight hitting my face, after a year of being locked up. I shut my eyes and breathed in deeply. Freedom. Bitter but sweet. And I knew exactly where I needed to go first. Not home. Not anywhere near the ankle monitor’s “safe zones.” No. There was still business that tied me to the one man who thought he had the upper hand.I smiled as I waved down a taxi.“Central district. Brighter Futures office.”Z
