The elevator doors glided open with a soft chime to reveal a penthouse draped in suffocating silence and thick dread. Maren stepped onto the plush carpet holding the sleeping baby tight against her chest while Gwen and the security detail trailed behind her in quiet apprehension. Her eyes locked onto Gideon standing in the center of the living room with his arms crossed and his back turned toward them.

He was staring at a massive wall monitor that played the viral street brawl on an endless rep

"I will not walk into a crowded ballroom hosted by the same monsters who destroyed my family just to satisfy your board members," Maren declared, backing away from the gilded invitation. Her chest heaved as the image of Desmond waiting inside that venue took root in her mind. "You can freeze your trust fund and burn your company to the ground because I am not going to that gala."Gideon tracked her retreat across the living room with eyes hardened by her defiance. "We do not have the luxury of declining, Maren," he countered, his voice like grinding stones. "The board needs a public victory to counteract the viral footage, and Sybella holds the keys to the largest press gathering of the season.""Sybella is a vicious pawn, and Desmond is the one pulling her strings to get me in a room where he holds all the power," Maren argued, her hands trembling at her sides. "He will use the gala to humiliate me in front of the media and prove to the family court that I am unfit to raise my nephew

"Never ask a man for the truth unless you are prepared to carry the crushing weight of his answer," Gideon advised while his thumbs brushed over her cheekbones. His possessive words hung suspended in the quiet room and left Maren completely paralyzed. The intense fire burning in his slate gray eyes promised a level of violence she could barely comprehend. "You cannot just claim me like a piece of territory and expect me to bow down to your authority," Maren whispered. She placed her hands over his wrists and tried to push him away from her face. The friction of his skin against hers sent another dangerous jolt of heat straight to her core. "I do not expect you to bow down because I need you standing tall beside me when the real war begins," Gideon countered. He let go of her face and took a half step backward to grant her a sliver of breathing room. The sudden loss of his physical warmth left Maren shivering in the center of the living room. "We are supposed to be partners forging

"Stop treating me like a piece of corporate property and let these men do the jobs you hired them to perform," Maren demanded while holding her ground against his looming frame. "You cannot punish everyone in this room just because you feel a temporary loss of control over a situation you did not orchestrate." Gideon did not blink as he raised a single hand and gestured toward the door without breaking eye contact with his defiant wife. "Take the child into the nursery and leave us alone right now," Gideon commanded in a voice that left no room for debate. Gwen hesitated for a fraction of a second before turning around and carrying the infant down the hall to escape the explosive tension. Colm silently escorted the dismissed guards out of the penthouse leaving Maren completely isolated with the furious billionaire. "You think this is about my ego or a need to dominate the people on my payroll," Gideon said while taking another slow step forward. "You have no concept of the violence

Her eyes locked onto Gideon standing in the center of the living room with his arms crossed and his back turned toward them.He was staring at a massive wall monitor that played the viral street brawl on an endless repeating cycle. The shrill sound of Sybella screaming insults filled the tense air and made Maren flinch with fresh waves of guilt. She prepared her mind for the vicious verbal assault she assumed he would unleash upon her for destroying their careful public facade."I can explain what happened on the street before you say anything," Maren started with a shaking voice as she took a tentative step forward. "Sybella cornered us the moment we stepped onto the pavement and she started throwing horribl

"Your pathetic sister died in a fiery wreckage trying to escape her own failures, and now you are selling your body to Gideon Cole just to keep her bastard child alive," Sybella sneered as she blocked the sidewalk with her tall frame. Her sharp voice carried down the quiet street, piercing Maren right through the chest like a poisoned dagger.Maren froze in place while a wave of icy grief washed through her veins, threatening to shatter her fragile self control. She tightened her fingers around the handle of the infant carrier and forced herself to stare directly into the cruel eyes of the socialite."Move out of my path right now Sybella," Maren commanded in a low tone that trembled with suppressed sorrow and fury. "You know nothing about my sister or the tragedy that took her away from this world."Sybella let out a harsh laugh that drew the attention of several shoppers walking out of nearby luxury boutiques. "I know she was a weak coward who could not handle Desmond, just like you

The sound of the baby crying cut through the suffocating heat between them like a blade. Gideon jerked backward as if burned, his hand dropping from her wrists while his face turned to stone. He turned on his heel and stormed out of the master suite without uttering a word, slamming the heavy door behind him.Maren pressed her fingers against her burning lips and took a ragged breath to calm her racing pulse. She walked to the nursery crib and lifted her crying nephew into her arms, rocking him gently against her shoulder. The room felt far too small now, trapping her inside a fortress of gold and uncomfortable desire."It is alright little one, I am right here with you," Maren whispered while pacing the length of the hardwood floor. She needed fresh air and distance from the man who had just dismantled her defenses with a single look. She adjusted the soft blanket and made her way toward the main living area.Colm stood near the elevator examining documents on his digital tablet whil
