After arguing with Sophia, Janet wasn’t in the mood to finish her lunch, so she returned to the office.
Janet couldn’t even get back to her workbench before receiving a call from HR.
Though she was praying, it was not what she was afraid of, her dismissal letter was proof Sophia had dragged her down this time, too.
Why couldn’t this girl let them leave in peace?
It wasn’t Janet who had ruined her peaceful family and snatched her father, why couldn’t Sophia live her own life?
Sophia was living a life of luxury, though it was Janet’s right. Still, she always made trouble in Janet’s life.
But this time it was really unbearable.
Where could she get such a good job like the Wilson group? Even if some companies show pity, nobody would accept a person who has been dismissed from the Wilson group.
Her career has been ruined before it could start freely.
Janet packed her close-to-nothing belongings from her workbench and left the Wilson group with her disheartened soul.
It was already a disaster for Janet, but she wasn’t aware another storm was waiting for her in her home.
When Janet’s taxi entered her house, she noticed a familiar car leaving from there.
She knew who it was and why he had come, but she was not in the mood to dwell on this matter.
She carried her box and was walking upstairs when her mother came out from the kitchen and called her.
“Janet, you came early. It’s good. I need to discuss something with you.” Rim looked so happy.
Though seeing her mother happy, Janet always felt good, but today she knew why her mother was happy and the reason wasn’t something Janet would appreciate.
“Mom, not now. I will talk to you later.” Janet wouldn’t let her mom spoil her mood further.
She needed to think of something and find something before her career ended even before starting.
“Janet, it can’t wait. I need to discuss something with you.” Rim looked angry, seeing her indifference.
“What is it, mom? Can’t you see I am not in the mood to talk with you?” Janet yelled out. Why can’t Rim still understand? Why is it always him?
Why can’t Rim once think about Janet? Why did Janet always need to take the backstop whenever that man was involved?
“What is this tone? Why are you behaving like this?” Rim was confused.
Janet has always been well-mannered.
Yes, she has her ups and downs too. After all, she has suffered a lot living in this single-parent household. But today her behavior was so strange.
“Why am I behaving like this? Isn’t it you? Have you ever tried to think about how I feel, Mom? It’s always him. Robert brown. It’s always him.” Janet couldn’t stop herself.
“It’s your father you are talking about.” Rim lost it when Janet took Robert’s name disdainfully.
“The father who left us for his other family. The father never cared whether we live or die. That father you are talking about, Mom?” Janet asked with hatred. But there was more of a sad child who has always craved his parental love.
The father who was supposed to protect her was creating problems for her.
“Rim, I know Robert has been MIA from our life. But he is still my husband, your biological father. How could I leave him?” Rim was on the verge of tears. She felt useless in front of her daughter.
“Yeah, your husband…. my father. Do you know what happened today with me, Mom? I got sacked from my job. The job I tried too hard to get. Do you know the reason?” Janet wiped the stubborn tears that got spilled from her eyes, though she tried hard not to cry.
“Because Sophia went to the Wilson group and created a scene and the Wilson group couldn’t keep an employee who could ruin their atmosphere. And guess who must have informed Sophia about my job? Huh.” Janet put the useless box she had been holding for so long and left the house with a dejected face.
Rim felt sad for her daughter, but she couldn’t blame Robert, either.
Sophia was his daughter, he must have told her about Janet on a whim.
It was Sophia who could be blamed, it wasn’t Robert’s fault.
This was what Rim could think about.
Janet knew it was useless to fight with Rim because she would never put Janet before Robert.
But her heart was crying, and she didn’t know where she could find comfort.
There was one person who could understand Janet, her friend Rebeca.
So Janet called her and they met in the cafe they usually meet.
Rebeca was someone who had been with Janet since childhood.
She had seen Janet’s happy family turn into a broken mess.
She knew how much trouble Janet had faced to come to this position.
And that’s why she has always encouraged Janet to forget everything and concentrate on her career.
Only when Janet is capable enough she can come out of this mess.
But today Rebeca didn’t have any suggestions either.
It was Janet’s dream to work for Wilson.
What is the good side of getting fired from her dream job?
“Janet, don’t lose hope, maybe you will get another opportunity to prove yourself. You have been the best student at our university. There must be a way out.” Rebecca could only come out with this lie.
Because both of them knew there was no way out for Janet.
“Maybe you can apply abroad,” Rebeca suggested.
Janet was good at her work. Rebeca was sure Janet would get something better than this.
“Leave it, Rebeca. I don’t want to think about this anymore. My life is doomed already. What can be better than this?” Janet sighed hopelessly.
“Janet…” Before Rebeca could come up with a suggestion Janet’s phone started to ring.
Janet was not in the mood to talk with anyone, so she turned down the call, but the phone started to ring again.
Janet checked, and it was an unknown number.
“Why don’t people let me live in peace?” Janet was irritated, but Rebeca didn’t let her cut the call this time.
“Janet, the person is calling you again. Pick it up. It can be important.” Rebeca knew Janet was feeling defeated.
But Rebeca had a feeling this call must be important.
“Who would call me? It must be Sophia, calling me to tease.” Janet often blocked Sophia, and she tried to tease her using a new number.
“But this number looks expensive.” The phone number wasn’t usual, the numbers looked VIP.
Janet looked at the number and yes, the number wasn’t something a normal citizen could afford.
She pressed the receiver button and brought the mobile close to her ear.
“Am I talking to Janet brown?” The caller was male and Janet was surprised to hear an unfamiliar but domineering voice calling her at this hour.
“Yes,” Janet replied nervously.
“I am Ben Jones. Calling from the Wilson group, CEO’s office.” The caller said and Janet almost dropped her phone.
“Wilson group… Mr. Jones… Can I know why you are calling me this late?” Janet was shocked.
Why would Wilson Group’s CEO try to contact a mere employee like her?
She didn’t even know Edwin Wilson knew her name?
She was nothing but a junior designer in the company.
Has she done something that has offended Edwin Wilson? Her luck can’t be that bad?
“Miss Brown, I am sorry to call you this late. But it’s Mr. Wilson who wants to meet you. He has some offers for you. I would appreciate it if you could come to the Wilson group this instant.” Ben’s tone was both polite and domineering.
No one in their right mind would dare to deny his order.
“But, can I know what the reason is… I mean did I do something wrong?” Janet couldn’t help herself from asking.
“Sorry, miss, we can only disclose the matter face to face. If you can send me your location, I would send a car this instant.” Ben offered, but Janet was getting sweaty hands already.
How could she let him take the trouble and send a car to her?
“No… I can go there myself. Can you give me half an hour?” Janet replied anxiously.
“Of course. But it’s Edwin Wilson who is waiting for you.” Ben’s words held a warning and Janet wouldn’t dare to keep Edwin waiting.
“I know,” Janet replied, and the call got disconnected.
“Why would Edwin Wilson want to see you when he fired you this morning?” Rebeca was confused, and so was Janet.
“I don’t know…but I should hurry.” Janet was anxious.
She knew something was not adding up, but she couldn’t make Edwin wait.
What if it was some job offer, and she missed it for her laziness, though it’s unlikely?
“Yes, hurry.” Rebeca urged her, and Janet hurriedly left the cafe to hire a taxi.
It didn’t take her long to reach the Wilson group as the traffic was slow.
But when she got down in front of Wilson Group, she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to go inside or not.
It’s Edwin Wilson you are talking about, and what could a useless person like her have to do with him?
Janet was getting nervous when someone called her name.
Please give a gems if you liked this chapter.
“Janet Brown?” Janet turned around and noticed a tall, handsome man was standing there, maybe waiting for her.“Yes,” Janet said, trying to stay calm.“Mr. Wilson is waiting for you upstairs,” Ben said and showed her the way forward.Janet started to walk and Ben walked forward while Janet followed him behind.Ben took her to the CEO’s private elevator instead of using the regular one, which normally Janet used to use while working in the Wilson group. She was surprised how the interior of the elevator was also exuding elegance. This was what must be the life of rich people. They leave their mark wherever they go.But one thing was making her confused, how she caught the eyes of this superb personality.Maybe she wouldn’t have to wait long to know the answer, but she wasn’t sure whether the answer would fit her liking. When the elevator opened again, they got down to the CEO’s office. This was the first time Janet was walking on this floor, as only top employees of the Wilson group had
“You…. you….” Janet couldn’t utter a word. How could she recognize someone she had never seen? That night it was dark, and Janet didn’t bother to see his face the next morning. Why would she, she just wanted to escape that place and it would be torture to remember that person’s face. After all, the first time for every girl is special, and she decided never to see him again.“Yes, me. Edwin Wilson. The person you spent a very passionate and intimate night with.” His tone held mockery, but Janet didn’t pay attention. His words were like a bomb on her and she got up from the chair hurriedly, trying to balance herself, but failed miserably. She took a few steps back, trying to stay away from him ignoring the pain she got by knocking on the table or chair she didn’t realize.“Interesting.” Edwin chuckled, but Janet looked around, trying to look for a way out.Janet turned around to leave, but Edwin’s voice halted her.“Where do you think you can go without my permission?” Edwin asked, and
Janet was sitting inside a taxi, thinking about what transpired between Edwin and her inside the Wilson group. She couldn’t imagine Edwin would offer her compensation so blatantly. She didn’t once regret refusing him.But she felt so inferior, so useless, thinking her first time, her virtue that she cherished so much was only worth some useless stack of cash.Is this what her life is to those rich people? Or maybe inferior to what she could imagine.Edwin was just being generous.Otherwise, wouldn’t it be much easy to vanish her presence from the earth? What was she in front of the great Edwin Wilson?“Mam,” the taxi driver’s voice made her come out of her trance.“Huh?” Janet looked outside and noticed the familiar surroundings of her house.“Oh.” She got out of the car and handed the fare to the driver before walking inside.“Janet, you are back. I was waiting for you.” Rim came out from the kitchen as soon as Janet entered inside.Janet was still angry, and she didn’t want to argue
“Mom… mom.” Janet pushed Rim gently with her shaky hands and when she didn’t respond Janet picked her head up and placed it on her lap.“Mom, wake up, don’t scare me.” Rim patted her face and tried to wake her up.Janet was at a loss, looking at her mother’s lifeless body.It was like her life was falling apart. As much as Rim is alone With Janet, the same applies to Janet too. They were only supporting each other.“Mom.” Janet’s tears were rolling down uncontrollably. She left Rim’s lifeless body on the floor and tried to get up, but fell back as her body lost balance. But she couldn’t show her weakness at this moment. She picked up the landline and called for an ambulance. The ambulance came within fifteen minutes, but these fifteen minutes were like a year to Janet. When they reached the hospital, Rim was pushed inside the ER and Janet could only wait outside helplessly. She was pacing the floor anxiously, and it took ages for anyone to inform her what happened to Rim.Finally, the
Janet understood her attempt was futile, she didn’t have any hope left from them. But she didn’t know what other option she had left with.Janet came back to the hospital hopelessly as her only hope was to get some support from Robert Brown, she was ready for anything in exchange. She didn’t have anyone she could ask for help from, and she felt so devastated. It felt like the world was closing around her.Janet didn’t know what to do, so she ended up in the hospital again.Though Rim was unconscious, Rim was Janet’s only solace from childhood.Rim was already transferred into the ward and various machines were attached to her body. The ventilator was preserving her life for now, but Janet didn’t know how much she could hold on.The beeping sound of the machine sounded like a time bomb, reminding her if she didn’t hurry, the bomb would explode and she would lose the only chance she had to save her mother.“Mom, don’t leave me, please.” Janet took Rim’s hand in hers and caressed Rim’s k
Ben was surprised to get Janet’s call and then felt she mustn’t be as innocent as they thought. He informed Edwin and Edwin ordered him to call her upstairs.Edwin was curious about what changed in a day that she was desperately waiting for him.Or maybe she wasn’t that innocent. After all, who can resist the temptation of money? When Janet entered Edwin’s room, Edwin was surprised looking at her haggard face.“Why are you looking for me?” Edwin asked while removing his suit jacket and hanging it over his chair. He rolled his sleeves, opened his muscled forearm, and sat on his chair, getting comfortable.“You offered me some money last night,” Janet said while fidgeting with her fingers. She was feeling ashamed, but Edwin was her only hope.“Oh! You want money. How much?” Edwin was disappointed though he had already guessed her motive. He opened his checkbook and wanted to get done with this.Money didn’t matter to him.He could offer her as much as she would want unless she forgot her
After Janet left, Edwin called Ben.“I have transferred one million to her account,” Ben informed and Edwin just hummed. He was busy with his thoughts.“Ben, find out what’s happening with her.” Edwin’s one demand was enough for Ben to get on with his work.He had already guessed Edwin would demand that, so he had arranged everything beforehand.“Miss Brown lives with her mother in a single-parent household. Her mother is hospitalized. So maybe that’s why she needs the money.” Ben informed.Edwin was surprised to hear that. That’s the reason for her haggard look.Edwin was regretful, thinking he had taken advantage of her desperate state. But he was also curious and wanted to keep her close.Offering her the post of his secretary wasn’t a decision of the moment. It was something he wanted to do, and the salary would be of great help.Maybe everything happened for the best!“Draw out a contract. I will email you the details. Make sure she is present here tomorrow. I want her to sign it
It was 7 in the evening and Janet got a call from Ben, as expected.“Miss Brown, a car is waiting outside your apartment. If you are ready to move, please come out.” Ben’s professional tone came from the mobile.“I am ready,” Janet replied curtly and took her luggage to walk out, but looking at the house where she had spent so many years Janet felt emotional. She didn’t have many memories of Robert. When they moved out of Robert’s house, she was only seven. She could only remember the silent crying of her mom, waiting for Robert, anticipating his visit even though it was never pleasant for them. That was another reason Janet hated Robert so much. They have struggled a lot during these years, yet it felt like he owed them every time Robert came here. But Janet could never forget those happy memories, when her mom would make breakfast for her and wait for her, urging her to wake up and get ready for school.Taking care of her tiny demands, making her life happy even though the financial
