Chapter 1

“Damian, I’ll release this photo if you refuse to accept this child.”

Elena slammed the picture onto the table.

The baby in her arms was crying so hard that her little face had turned bright red.

I stared at the photograph for three seconds. Then, my knees gave out and I dropped to the floor.

The room fell silent.

My mother rushed over and grabbed me.

“Damian, what are you doing? Your father has only been gone for six months and she brings home a child with an unknown background? And you’re actually willing to accept her?”

I did not look up.

“Mom, she’s my daughter from now on.”

My mother was momentarily startled.

Elena smiled.

She held the baby, walked over to me, and lightly tapped my knee with the tip of her shoe.

“Did you hear that? Your son made his choice.”

My mother trembled with anger.

“Elena, what exactly did you show him?”

“Just a photo.”

She flipped the picture over and casually held it out toward my mother.

The moment my mother was about to see it, I reached out and blocked her.

“Don’t look.”

My mother stared at me in disbelief.

“What are you afraid of?”

My throat tightened.

“I said don’t look.”

Elena’s smile grew wider.

“Damian, I didn’t know you were such a devoted son.”

The baby in her arms stopped crying and opened her eyes to look at me.

Those eyes looked exactly like someone else’s.

Zachary Quinn.

He was the last person caught on the surveillance footage arguing with my father on the night of his fatal car accident.

Also, he was Elena’s ex-boyfriend from college.

My mother had clearly thought of the same thing.

She suddenly turned toward Elena.

“Is this child Zachary’s?”

Elena did not deny it.

She simply placed the baby into my arms.

“You have three days. Complete the adoption paperwork.”

I held the child.

She was as soft as a warm ball of water.

My mother raised her hand and slapped me.

“Your father’s body hasn’t even been laid to rest and yet you’re willing to become the father of your enemy’s child?”

My cheek burned with pain as I had not avoided the blow.

Elena sat down on the sofa and spoke calmly.

“Mrs. Lane, please don’t make it sound so terrible.

“Zachary only had an argument with your husband. The car accident wasn’t something he caused.”

My mother pointed at her.

“Then why did he leave the country the very next day? Why have you been covering for him this entire time?”

“Where’s your evidence?”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“Without evidence, that’s just slander.”

My mother was so furious her vision blurred. She had to hold onto the table to keep herself standing.

I lowered my head and gently comforted the baby.

“Stop arguing.”

My mother looked at me as though she could not believe what she had heard.

“What did you say?”

I repeated myself.

“Stop arguing. You’ll frighten the child.”

At that moment, my mother’s eyes looked completely empty.

Elena stood up in satisfaction and gently patted my head.

“That’s more like it.”

My mother stepped backward with tears in her eyes.

“Damian, what happened to you?”

I looked at the child in my arms and spoke softly.

“Mom, Elena is right.

“The child is innocent.”

Elena laughed.

However, my mother suddenly stared at the photograph beside me and lunged forward, trying to grab it.

Elena was faster. She shoved the photo into her bag.

“Want to see it?”

She tilted her head.

“After you see it, you’ll become just as obedient as your son.”

My mother stood frozen.

Elena picked up the child and turned toward the bedroom.

When she reached the doorway, she stopped and turned back to look at me.

“Damian, remember this.

“From now on, her name is Stella Lane.”

In the end, I chose to let Stella live.It was not because I forgave her.It was because I did not want my father’s family to carry the burden of a child’s death. When the craftsman cut Elena’s fingertip, she cursed viciously. Her blood flowed into the copper basin. The two talismans caught fire at the same time.Elena screamed and collapsed onto the floor. Her hair turned half white at a speed visible to the naked eye.Stella curled up in the corner. The pain made her lose consciousness. My mother stood beside me. She did not cry anymore. She only said, “If your father saw this, he would feel sorry for you.”I looked at the ashes in the basin.“That’s why I can’t let him die in vain.”By the time Elena was taken away, she could barely stand. She looked at me, hatred and fear mixed in her gaze.“Damian, were you waiting for this day from the very beginning?”I answered, “No.”She was startled for a moment.I walked up to her.“From the day I woke up, I wanted to kill

Stella saw it too.She let out a shriek like she had been caught off guard.“What is that?”Elena stopped at the doorway. Her gaze was cold and dark.“Did you think I only cast a spell on you?“Damian, I would never place my bets on just one person.“The day Stella was born, I tied her fate to the Lane family.”My mother’s face turned pale.“What do you mean?”Elena looked at Stella and smiled.“The longer she lives off the Lane family and takes everything they give her, the more she becomes bound to them.“You want to kick her out?“Sure. You can.“After she leaves the Lane family for three days, she’ll feel as though every bone in her body is being torn apart.”Stella rushed toward her.“Mom, you’re lying to me, right?”Elena looked at her daughter. There was not even a trace of affection in her eyes.“How could I lie to you?”Stella broke down crying.“Why would you do this to me?”Elena replied, “You’re my daughter.“You were supposed to help me obtain the Lan

My mother’s body swayed, but my uncle caught her before she fell.Elena knelt on the ground. Tears welled up in her eyes instantly.“I didn’t mean to.“That night, your father found out about Zachary and me. He said he was going to call the police.“He said he would make you divorce me and send me to prison.“I was only trying to stop him.”I asked, “How?”She shook her head while crying.“I don’t know.”Zachary sneered coldly.“You don’t know?“You were the one who grabbed the steering wheel.“You were the one who opened the car door.”My mother covered her mouth as tears fell onto the back of her hand. However, I did not look at her.My gaze was fixed on Elena.“You pushed my father out of the car?”Elena screamed, “No!“He lost his balance!”Zachary spat on the ground.“You’re still pretending?“When he was holding onto the car door and begging for his life, you told me to speed up.”The only sound left in the banquet hall was Stella’s crying.Elena crawled ac

Stella looked as though someone had grabbed her by the throat.A few seconds later, she screamed and rushed forward to snatch the documents.“Who gave you the right to terminate that?“I don’t agree!”I handed the documents to the lawyer. The lawyer stepped forward.“Miss Stella, there was a major concealment of information in your adoption process.“The death certificate of your biological mother that Miss Shaw provided back then was forged.”Elena’s expression stiffened.I looked at her.“Your so-called distant cousin is still alive.”Stella whipped her head around.“Mom?”Elena’s lips moved slightly.Zachary laughed beside her. It was a harsh and ugly laugh.“What distant cousin?“That person was her.”The crowd in the banquet hall erupted again.Stella took a step back.“What do you mean?”Even while being handcuffed, Zachary still made sure to drag Elena down with him.“Your mother forged an entire set of documents just to get you into the Lane family.“She s
