Chapter 72
My body jolted itself awake under the brightness of the sun and my attention fell straight on the wolves, realising I dozed off when Izzy and Dante took over patrolling last night. I sighed with relief, thankful that nothing had happened whilst I was sleeping. My body and neck ached from resting on the hard ground with my head against the log.
Izzy and Dante were busying themselves, cooking and pulling up fresh water in the well bucket for our breakfast. I got to my feet with a stretch and scanned each of the wolves, checking their medicine and moving the carts under cooler shade.
“Good morning sleepy head”. Dante chuckled as he roasted more fresh rabbit.

It didn’t feel as lonely and cut off for me Dante and Izzy with grams, mother and the guards now with us. All the guards took a break from their duty to sit with the rest of us when we all ate supper last night. There were more voices, chatter and conversation around the camp fire, and many questions for grams about the camp she was seeing for the first time. Six days passed as we carried on with our chores and routine, gathering enough water and food for us all as grams and mother continued to make bulks of her mushrooms and herbs to sustain the wolves and help their muscle growth now that they were starting to wake up throughout the day. It would only last for a few minutes with their eyes opening and whimpering in fear at their new surroundings. But each time, I’d run my hand gently down their fur, and I’d smile with care, I’d tell them that they were safe and that I was a night wolf watching over them. Once again I had to leave Leo’s side and return back to camp. With Zach still out there, it uneased me to leave the nightwolves under little protection. When we left the gates of Lundberg, I could only hope that soon we would hear news of Caleb and my father’s return and success at finding and catching Zach, and that Leo would wake up and we could all start to move forward with our lives, no longer in fear of what hellish treachery would happen next. After our encounter with the rogues, we’d hurried our journey to the Whitlock border, even more concerned that the guards may have been attacked now that we knew Zach still had followers out there willing to obey his orders. We were relieved to see men starting the build of the wall, all untouched as the guards patrolled and kept the men protected. Seeing them all alive and safe with my own eyes assured me that Violet was locked away in the damp and darkened prison tower. We headed back to camp, keeping a watch at our backs for any rogues attempting to follow us, but when we reached the grounds of camp, I was astonished to see all the night wolves happily walking around, tending to the chores and gathering more wood for the camp fire. “You’re all back!” Grams gushed as she came bounding over toward us with a welcoming smile. “How was Leo, was he awake?” She asked after kissing me on the cheek. “No, but I did put my letter in his room”. “Oh”. She replied, with a sympathetic look.

Over the next few days we all worked together to keep the camp running smoothly and I started to slowly reintroduce the night wolves into hunting again. I took the lead but encouraged them to use their senses. To allow the earth beneath their feet feel the movement of their pray and to breathe in the air that would lead them the way of their next meal. For so long all of their senses had been weakened and almost completely diminished, it made them feel confused and frustrated to feel as though they were learning the advanced skills of a night wolf all over again.I had still avoided telling them of Zach’s rogues still lurking in the forest, and whilst they slept at night in the cabins, I’d secretly patrol the grounds with some of the guards, then come up with all different kinds of excuses to retreat to my cabin during the day to catch up on my rest.
