The all-black Einherjar cruiser set itself down on a wide, grassy flatland that served as a makeshift landing pad surrounded by wide slate walkways. The ship’s extensive side ramps slid out and lowered to the ground even as its belt armor opened up and slid to the side. Once all was set, its bulkhead doors slid open beneath and revealed the throngs of people waiting inside.
Among the first to head out were members of the CRCD, though they were less in a ‘work’ mode and more in a ‘sightseeing’ mode. Or at least something that sat somewhere in between. They went out and scouted the immediate area for a few minutes.
Once they were satisfied, they beckoned the thousands of people still inside the ship’s hold. Those people shrugged off any trepidation they had, stepped out in small groups, went down the ramps, and headed towards t
Space flashed brightly as ships of the Einherjar ported into orbit. Their black hulls just barely stood out from the void-black planet beside them.Anali de Jardin stood behind the lead helmsman and watched as the galaxy spun back into place. Then she walked back to her command chair and took a seat.“Status,” she commanded. The holoprojections of High Admiral Halbrecht and Dreadmother Orsethii shimmered onto the battleship’s bridge and stood next to Anali’s command chair.“Fleet in position,” replied an analyst. “Projecting tactical analysis mapping now.”The immediate space in front of the three officers shifted and blurred as a holographic tacmap formed. On it were the numero
Cheers erupted all across the bridge as the assault fleet’s attack on Godeater continued. Although it was only at a quarter of their original intent, it was more than enough to rip through hundreds of its many thousands of mirrors.Their sheer destructiveness left the planet’s outer satellite layer scarred and splintered all across the surface. It almost seemed like a vast egg whose shell had been cracked and broken.Despite all the damage they had done, it was still a fraction of the entirety of the stations. Although that fact certainly dampened their spirits, it wasn’t enough to completely snuff their hopes outright.“Maintain the barrage!” Anali commanded. “Empty out every disc we’ve got! Do not
The surviving ships of the Specialized Assault Force flashed into orbit around Yggdrasil Station. Everyone aboard seemed to have a pall hanging over their heads, like a deepening shadow. Most were quiet and morose as they angled their ships towards the station itself and entered its widening hangar bays.Elsewhere, deeper inside the station, a massive council chamber was filled with dozens of people. Some were First Feathers of the Corvus Republic, while others were officers of the Einherjar. The rest were members of the different former nations and organizations and allegiances, such as Imperials or Discordians. All came to represent their groups, or at least some version of it.Collectively, they referred to themselves as the Tribes of the End Times. And all were in debate with each other about their sudden
Raijin faded back as the rest of the council continued their arguments. Many certainly wanted them to push forward despite the darkness, while the others simply wanted to disappear into it.No-one wanted to die, of course. But for some, the struggle was already insurmountable. She herself didn’t know which way to go. At first she believed they could weather Godeater, and survive between its shadows. But now? Now she wondered if Yggdrasil was the only thing left to them. Maybe they should all be preparing for that reality. As she quietly thought to herself, an alert came into her DI - someone was activating one of the devastator hangar bays. When she brought up the ship’s tags, immediately saw that it was Thanatos.Raijin left behind a semi-autonomous construc
Thanatos flashed into open space above Dendrus IV, just inside of its gravitational pull. Its all-black hull contrasted distinctly against the numerous mirror satellites that still covered the planet. Mirrors which immediately shifted their position and turned Godeater’s reflection towards the vast drogar devastator. As the mirrors adjusted themselves, Raijin split her nanite swarm and diffused into the ship’s circuits and modules and systems. That shard of her consciousness dove into the ship itself and connected to every node possible.Just as Freya filled the ship through a telepathic connection, so too did Raijin, albeit through a purely digital connection. She inhabited Thanatos’ intelligences and engines easily, and in doing so connected to Freya as well. Both of their thoughts and ideas coal
Freya and Raijin looked at the landscape all around them. The expansive grassy field stretched all the way out to the horizon in every direction, and met the sunny bright blue sky above. The vast emptiness accentuated the fact that there was absolutely nothing and no-one else around them.“Where are you?” they asked. “Why can’t we see you?”Godeater responded from all around, and even from within, as though it inhabited the galaxy itself. Perhaps in a way, it did.“There is no biological equivalent to the reality of my existence,” it replied.“Honestly, anything would probably work,” Freya and Raijin said. “Just… turn yourself into a person, like us. We can talk easier that way, don’t you agree?&rdq
A sense of deepening horror spread across Freya and Raijin’s mind. It occurred to them that their earlier assumptions about Godeater was both incredibly close and incredibly far away. Whatever it was encompassed more than a mere antivirus or antibiotic. They realized that it was actually some kind of complex defense mechanism that was anchored multidimensionally through every universe. It existed solely, or at least primarily, to ensure some kind of balance within every universe. It was literally protecting something that neither of them could fully comprehend or understand - something far larger than themselves. As it said, it was correcting something that was infinite and encompassing. Both felt as though they were infinitely small against a vast presence, as though they were ants standing next to a human.
Freya’s eyes flickered open in the darkness as she let out a soft groan. As her mind spun back into consciousness, she realized that she was laying down awkwardly, and inside a small compartment of some sort. The air seemed thick and dry and somewhat dusty, though what concerned her most was that something extremely heavy seemed to press down on her. She tried to move her arms and legs, but found that they were pinned down by whatever was on top of her.She poured the energies of Ascendant Form through her body, then pushed aside the large slab of granite stone that was on top of her. The slab hit the stone floor with a KRAK, and broke into large chunks all around the floor. Those pieces settled themselves around the broken and cracked ground even as Freya pushed herself out of the small crater she
