VALERIE

I frowned at Diya’s uninterested response.

She was angry at me—or perhaps at herself? I had expected her to speak out about Lucas during the heat of it all, but Diya hadn’t said a word. And the thought of it made me wonder…had she too, believed it was the right thing to do?

I could tell that deep down, she cared about Lucas. She wouldn’t have tried so hard to save him, otherwise. She wouldn’t have risked both of our lives for a “leech” if she didn’t have some desire to protect him.

Just as I was about to bite back at her, I felt Diya entire demeanor shift. She turned to ice within me, and snarled out a hostile sound.

I smell vampires.

I hurried out after Lucas and Xavier—who seemed to have sensed the threat as well. With everything in me, I hoped it was Brigid—that she had finally returned with the supplies she meant to retrieve.

No…

There was a strange smell on the air. And it wasn’t Brigid’s lovely perfume.

My spine tingled. I could hear them in the bushes, encompassing our

VALERIEI knew that I was letting my guard down—which probably wasn’t a good idea, given that I’d been forced to come here. But it was so hard to keep my hackles up. The women were all so kind. They saw the marks Lucas had left on me and thought surely I must’ve been an abused slave who suffered at the hands of a vampire. Miriam did her best to make me feel safe and comfortable in the cave. She had taken to braiding my hair while we fell into a deep discussion about dragons. I couldn’t help but fall into the gentle tug of her fingers. It reminded me of my own mother. The one I’d known, at least.“Dragons seem so…different from what I’d been told about them,” I said.“Oh, those silly stories aren’t true,” Miriam replied. “Dragons don’t force us to do as they please. They take us in if we’re willing to become their breeders, and they care for us. And anyway, we’re given choices on who we prefer and how we’d like to do it.”“What happens when a woman chances her mind?” I asked.“The drag

SEBASTIANNirvonth looked at me disapprovingly.“Why didn’t you let the witch examine that girl?” He asked. There was restraint in his voice, but it was beginning to fail. Nirvonth always did have more of a temper than his idiot brother. “Medic Don did warn us that the witch’s condition is quickly deteriorating,” he said. “We haven’t much time to take advantage of her capabilities. The caves grow hotter by the day.”Adrian placed a hand on his twin brother’s shoulder. “Calm down, Nirvonth. He was right to delay the meeting for today. The girl is already shaking in her boots. If we took her to the witch, imagine how frightened she’d be? If she’s scared, there won’t be much chance at all of her joining our harem.”“She isn’t joining the harem,” I replied. “That is not why we brought her here.”Adrian and Nirvonth exchanged a look. Then Adrian frowned in my direction. “But she’s the perfect age for breeding. And she’s fairly attractive—certainly unique looking. And it does come as quite

VALERIEI’ve never flown once in my entire life. Planes and helicopters didn’t exist after the great war, and they’d only been told about in stories. I had dreamed of flying since I was a child—of soaring high above the clouds, close enough to touch the sky. I imagined it would be beautiful—wonderful. It wasn’t.At least, not on the back of a dragon.I clung on as tightly as I could to the scales of Sebastian’s skin—terrified that if I lessened my grip even slightly, I’d be thrown off. I had been holding back vomit for several minutes now, nausea twisting my guts around like a thrashing python.I was growing dizzier by the second—my mind spinning as I yearned to feel the ground beneath my feet again. This was so disorienting—so cold and uncomfortable. And to add, I had no idea how long we’d been flying for. It could have been minutes or hours. All I knew was that the sky was darkening around us—almost like we’d flown into the eye of a storm.By the time we finally landed, I could bare

VALERIEI looked around frantically at the ring of fire building around us. It would have been impossible to light a fire like this—one that moved in such a large circle, like someone had poured a wreath of gasoline around them. But gasoline was hard to come by since the way. And if this wasn’t Lucas’s doing, then that left only one possibility: dragons.A sound filled the air. A sound like heavy wings beating against the wind. I looked up, where the tops of trees shivered at the sudden intrusion. Then I saw them—three distant dragons breaking the tree line. They looked even larger from further away, their stark bodies nothing but black cut-outs in the sky. The grew closer, the wind rattling the trees as they loomed over us.Then the dragons angled their bodies like arrows and dove, catching themselves on a gust of air before they hit the ground. I shielded my eyes from the wind and the spray of pine needles and dirt as they descended. The moment they touched the earth, they shifted i

VALERIE“Stop?” Xavier looked down at me in outrage. “Why are you trying to protect him?“I can explain,” I said—but my words were cut short by sharp, burning rush of heat. I slumped to my knees with a whimper, panting for breath. Was Lucas right? Was this really going to kill me if I didn’t get some relief soon?Xavier froze and stared down at me.“She’s in heat,” Lucas said, still palming the blood from his mouth.Xavier’s gaze snapped from him, a monstrous rumble curdling from his chest. “I don’t need you to tell me that!” He looked as though he wanted to send a second fist into the vampire’s face—but instead, he lowered himself and scooped me up into his arms. The moment he touched me, it was like ice sliding over my skin. A cool, momentary relief. I clutched at his chest, dizzy and full of scattered thoughts. “I just wanted to save him,” I said. “He needed blood and I couldn’t let him die.”But Xavier’s expression didn’t soften. His face was cold and stony, his eyes traveling ove
